  1. Review titled Waiting and more waiting

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 27 October 2023

I had a scheduled 15 min appointment that I had waited 6 months for. I waited approximately 25 minutes to be seen, the dr who saw me seemed stumped so sent me to another department. But I had to go to a&e to get to that department. I explained to the receptionist why I was there, and it wasn’t for a&e. I was told to sit in a&e and wait, an hour passed, I was called in to triage and the nurse was treating me as an a&e patient, I explained I was only here to see another unit, the surgical unit, she made a call, said I was right, then told me to sit in the waiting room again. Another 40 minutes passed then I was sent to another department. I explained when I got there why I was there, so the surgical team could have a quick look at my issue and make a plan for another day on some minor surgery. I was told the wait time to see anyone was up to 8 hours. I panicked as I only had childcare for a little while, my disabled father was waiting in the car park as we had to drive 1 hour to get there as we don’t live in Preston. I asked to rebook; they spoke to me like I was crazy for ‘self discharge’ but I tried over and over to explain that I only came in for a 15 minute appointment and I’d not been in the hospital over 4 hours. They told me to wait in the waiting room then someone will call me to rebook. I waiting another hour! I was hungry, thirsty and tired at this point and still no idea how I was going to be fixed up. They eventually agreed I could come in the week after but no guarantee on how long I’ll be waiting to be seen, and this won’t even be for the surgery, so I have to travel two hours both ways again to just have someone look at it. I felt so upset, so messed around. All the staff, nurses including seemed flustered, angry, rushed off their feet, agitated, tired, which of course made them snappy and rude, there wasn’t any care for the patients waiting, no checking we were ok or anything. I know this isn’t their fault, it’s the way the NHS is now. But there has to be a better way that working these people into the ground. As for my case, I wish that there was more communication and organisation to make sure I get seen by the correct person the first time.

I was admitted early Wednesday morning for facial swelling due to infected tooth absess. Was treated with care and respect by all involved on ward 3. The maxx fac doctors were all superb no stone was left unturned to find the root of my problem. The nurses and all staff on ward 3 were also superb, nothing was a problem for them. From being admitted to hospital to being discharged 3 days later I felt safe calm and cared for at all times. Thank you

  4. Review titled Great

I have nothing but praise for the cardiology dept at Preston. Unfortunately my recent appointment was cancelled, apparently because the department is moving. I had no notification of the cancellation and only found out because I rang on the day.

I've made numerous visits following an accident a year ago. Despite a few hiccups, I have experienced nothing but pleasant service, care and compassion from the brilliant surgeons to the hand therapists, physio and nursing staff at both Chorley and Royal Preston hospitals. Despite challenges, the dedication I witnessed was relentless.

  6. Review titled Disgraceful Service

Rated 1 star out of 5

    by M BARTON - Posted on 06 September 2023

I had an appointment today at 3-15 pm the 6th of September on machine 6 for radiotherapy treatment. As my appointment time was approaching one of the hospital staff came in with a husband and wife team saying sit down there I’ll get you seen to. The man took my appointment and after speaking to his wife she told me they had no appointment and it was not an emergency. I got the impression the person who escorted them into the department was a friend. The board which states if there is a delay was blank. One of the operatives was not showing a name badge that could be seen. All this meant everybody’s appointment was late.Disgusting. I let all the people waiting know what was going on,they were not pleased.

  7. Review titled Improve care, resource management for services

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 17 September 2023

GP insisted referral. Patient informed by telephone call due to scan results etc, by the department, that an appointment was requested by one of the teams. Six months later they received a date, totalling in a years wait. The lead teams member did not engage with the patient, nor offered, nor suggested, any other care pathway. The appointment itself was short, and uninformative. The patient tried to engage fully with, and explore, more beneficial pathways to care, this not met during the appointment by the lead teams member. The patient left highly concerned at the mismanagement of finite resources, and care pathways. Therefore the patient suggests that to maximize resource management, engagement, and care pathways, only patients whereby a care pathway will be engaged with in any capacity are accepted. Patients who will not have engagement, or care pathways offered, due to a variety of reasons including viability of any treatment etc, are not accepted when referred by GPs. If a mistake in engagement of a care pathway to a patient has been made, at the earliest opportunity they are referred back to their GP. And where possible appointments not made. Implementing such improvements will minimise patient, and department resource waste, and maximize more effective and efficient services.

  9. Review titled Unacceptably hot Discharge Lounge

    by Dinky66 - Posted on 05 September 2023

After my 5 day stay on ward 12 with treatment for UTI/UROSEPSIS started by recent chemotherapy I was discharged from ward to the Discharge Lounge. When I entered one patient was waiting and another arrived shortly after me. Being a Sunday it was not busy but a very hot day. The air in the room was like a sauna (not good for patients still being treated for infection with temperature issue). Thinking my stay would be short I phoned my partner to pick me up from a distance away, and waited patiently in room getting hotter. All the staff were sat at a table hugging the one and only fan in room. After an hour or so the first patient was getting annoyed over waiting for her ambulance home and suggested she got a family member to pick her up but she was told another 15 mins. I then asked how much longer I needed to wait and being told waiting for pharmacy to deliver antibiotics (they phoned me hours before on ward). I told them I was struggling with the heat and suggested I could go outside As soon as I arrived outside one of the staff came out with medication and discharge letter but needed to go back to room for my personal medication I arrived with. I entered the room and went to table whilst a staff member sorted my medication bag, jokingly stood in front of fan and mentioned stealing their breeze also commented how nice it would be to place a patio door onto the unused green garden outside. At that point another staff member talking to another so I could hear said if they were on her own they would buy a coffee in the near cafe and wait there. They had obviously not been through muscle invasive bladder cancer, had a recent bladder removed with complications, using a urostomy bag for life, having chemotherapy resulting to long stay in hospital with life threatening urosepsis infection, I need to keep away from other people. I just ignored the comment and wanted to get home. I do not feel this is any way to treat people who are still unwell and vulnerable, especially a cancer patient being treated still for a serious infection. The rph discharge lounge needs more ventilation - I wouldn't care if the hospital is full of air fans, and some staff need to be more considerate to patients needs.
