I was admitted twice in the last month to Southport A&E with acute breathing problems Despite the Dept being very busy I was triaged very quickly and treatment started by your calm & highly professional staff All relevant tests were carried out quickly and I was seen immediately by the clinical Staff I could not have had better attention and all your lovely staff managed to settle a very scared 82 yr old You are overworked & underpaid

  2. Review titled General Surgery

Just left ward 10b having had a sigmoid colectomy on the 12th. At all levels the standard of care was excellent and I can't thank the staff enough (this is also true of the staff at Ormskirk who carried out preliminary scans as well). I know that the NHS comes in for some flak from certain quarters on occasions. However, why this is, is a mystery to me. I only witnessed dedicated, professional and helpful staff. It made me proud of our public services, of which the NHS is definitely the Jewel in the Crown.

  3. Review titled Inefficient department

Rated 2 stars out of 5

I don’t think I’ve ever attended an A&E so poorly managed. I waited over 8 hours tonight for less than 10 minutes in total with a doctor / nurse, including triage, and I was not alone. No one was kept informed and whilst there were a lot of people it didn’t seem busy for most of the overnight time I was in the waiting room. Going an hour between name calls. Receptionist didn’t even know you could pay at the barrier or what to do when my phone (and payment method) had died. I thankfully realised I could pay at the barrier, and saved myself time and further delay. The majority of people in the waiting area could have been dealt with much faster than they were. I even had another patient barge into my triage appointment to complain about the queues and demand her relative be bumped up the queue. The medical staff that dealt with me were kind and helpful. But it really shouldn’t have taken that long.

  4. Review titled Excellent service received

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Heather Jiggle - Posted on 16 June 2023

I had an accident and fractured and dislocated my leg/ankle. I did have a long wait for an ambulance but there had been a bad accident that evening so the wait was understandable. The care I received from ambulance, a&e, consultant, surgeon and ward 14a staff was beyond amazing. They were efficient and kept myself and my husband up to date all the time, I was quite out of it but from student nurses all the way to consultants it was made as much as could be a comfortable experience for me. I just can't thank them all enough for their excellent care they gave me and my family. You were all amazing, every single one of you.

  5. Review titled Very upsetting experience

Rated 3 stars out of 5

Visited on 19/06/23 with an elderly, wheelchair-bound relative who has a long-term health condition to have a 24/7 heart monitor fitted. Since this person can be travel sick we set off early and arrived in plenty of time. I showed the relevant letter with the appointment time of 11 am to a lady outside the door of the ECG room. A couple of minutes later she came over to where we were sitting and asked to look at the letter again. So we waited. And waited. I wanted to check at 11.30 but decided to wait as it might be a simple matter of running late, and despite my relative's frailty, that might have been a reasonable excuse, and we didn't want to be pushy. However, time went by with an endless stream of people going in and out of the consulting room which we learned later my relative would be seen in. At 11.45 my husband went to the ECG door again and asked if there was a problem. The lady he spoke to said she would look into it and let us know. A few minutes later she came out and said my relative would be in next. Once inside the said room (although I didn't think for one minute it was this lady's fault), I asked her very nicely why a very elderly and vulnerable patient had been left waiting for so long. She very kindly said she'd look into it, and when she came back a couple of minutes later she told us that the patient hadn't even been put on the list. The appointment letter had been looked at twice, so what was the problem? I do wonder what might have happened had we turned up an hour late! Had I been the patient I may not have been so upset, but the situation caused my relative a lot of distress. I did attempt to call PALS on the numbers on the website. Two calls went unanswered and I left a message on the other number. I did get a message back, telling me that they didnt deal with cardiology on that number. If I'd had any useful response I would not be writing this review. Having said that the same relative was dealt with by amazing A&E staff a few weeks earlier and the initial problem was identified and dealt with very quickly. Sadly this did not extend to the (several) wards she was in or the complete lack of communication or misinformation we were given during her stay. There was much confusion by conflicting information we were given about what was happening/going to happen and what actually did happen. The whole family was confused, thankfully she has family to support her, because anyone who doesn't would be completely lost. I know the NHS has faced many difficulties in recent years but it might help if valuable time wasn't wasted by issues like we have faced. I don't think it should be that difficult, and am quite certain it would make the lives of staff and patients/families alike much easier and straightforward.

  6. Review titled Amazing treatment when so busy

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 24 May 2023

Referred by GP urgently. A and E was extremely busy. Patient were standing when relatives where sat down. This soon changed when rightly so those relatives asked to stand to allow patients who were ill to be seated. I was treated with kindness, dignity and compassion which the staff at the time, in my opinion, were not. I now known what was wrong with me and could not fault the department.

Thank you to all those who took care of me with total dignity & understanding even though we all knew my Gp could of prevented a trip to A&E by ambulance. Thank you to the ambulance crew for your compassion & understanding about my disability. Thank you to the Drs who knew I knew my body. Just everyone that was there that night & helped me thank you. As someone who feels guilty for ringing 999 when I know my Gp could of stopped this trip none of you put that on me. You where all perfectly professional & helpful.

  9. Review titled Worrying long waiting time

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 05 March 2023

My mum has been referred to the respiratory clinic in October 2022 and she still hasn’t received a date for appointment, her condition is getting deteriorating and we are getting worried. Rang reception twice, the call was handled by a rude, disrespectful woman who hung up on her saying she doesn’t know when she’ll get an appointment. Terrible service!

  10. Review titled Insensitive doctors

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 24 November 2022

Nursing staff so lovely, polite and friendly. However, consultants extremely difficult people showing no sympathy which is very unhelpful when you're poorly and clearly upset by the situation anyway. They seem to forget we are people with feelings and it doesn't help when the abrupt doctors come in with 6 other staff all glaring. As soon as I mentioned the fact I have a female condition I was disregarded and the problem was immediately blamed on that. It's awful what women with certain conditions go through, it is a battle. I now feel like there is nowhere for medical help when you're ill because my gp doesn't know anything about the condition and a&e blame it on any underlying conditions you may have. The doctor told me I should see a specialist which I am waiting only a year for! Extremely upset by the situation I will never go back if I need help again.
