Review titled Excellent Service
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Gill Barber - Posted on 27 January 2025
I am very confused by this review process, as I have already written one and the computer appears to have eaten it. My visit this month to sdec was first class and so was my visit to xray and scanning department. Thank you for such excellent service

Review titled Excellent!

I cannot praise SMH's Audiology Dept enough. The Audiologist was very thorough, and talked me through proceedings in simple terms and kept me at ease the whole time. I was seen on time on both occasions. The only negative is that the hospital do not do ear syringing, so had to go somewhere else to have this done and make another appointment.

Review titled A&E
Rated 3 stars out of 5

In past Stoke Mandeville has been great. But the A&E needs looking into. Lack of communication creates backlogs and waiting times. I went to A&E because of worry with pacemaker. Harefield pacing clinic closed weekend. Was told by 999 to go to nearest hospital. Which I did. Had an ecg and told to wait till doctor sees me 3 hours later nurse came out and she hadn’t a clue why I was there or what a pacemaker was. Eventually saw doctor who sent me home. Fine could have looked at ecg and was happy to let me go home. So lack of communication is rife in A&E. A good housekeeping policy should be adopted and proper communication undertaken and things would run smoothly. Not the only one thought the system was lacking that day. I have great admiration for NHS staff as family members are doctors, surgeons etc. but really needs streamlining.

Review titled Horrendous experience
Rated 1 star out of 5

My 92 year old Mother arrived at the A&E at 14h00 30/12/2024. Having being admitted via ambulance for very low oxygen level, she was eventually seen by a Dr 9 hrs later. According to the GP at the Dr surgery she needed to be put onto a drip - no such thing happened after myself (daughter ) repeatedly asking the duty nurse who kept telling me the Dr will be with her soon. In the meantime no food or drink was offered to her or any of the other 10/12 patients lying in beds in the corridor, I myself went around helping other elderly patients with water and finding pillows. I also had to intervene when not sure if it was a nurse or nurse aid trying to give my mother someone else's medication, now if I had not been there to question it what would have happened as my mother was extremely confused and sleepy. After awhile I presume some sort of medical person very kindly came along and shoved very roughly and painfully up my mother's nose to do a Covid test - seriously she's 92 a little respect and with care would be nice. As for the only 2 toilets that I could see in A&E no thought for the elderly who are in wheel chairs and need the extra space (toilet you could barely swing a cat around in ) I had to clean the toilet up myself before I would allow my mother to even attempt to sit on the seat. Seriously Stoke Mandeville Management you need to improve your service.

Review titled Underfunded, understaffed, under resourced
Rated 2 stars out of 5

I would like to say I am immensely grateful for the NHS in this country and all the staff that work there. However, my experience at Stoke mandeville maternity has been chaotic and stressful. I have had two midwife appointments cancelled and rearranged with less than 48 hours notice. Every time I visit I see a different midwife. No continuity of care or developing a relationship with a midwife throughout your pregnancy. After waiting 30 minutes for a blood test after my midwife appointment the HCA called me through. Why the midwife couldn’t have taken the sample during the appointment I am not sure. An hour after getting home I was then called to say my sample had clotted and I needed to come back today as the blood test had to be done on the same day as the scan for the results to be valid. This was incredibly inconvenient and cost me another £3:50 in parking. I was then phoned by a nurse from the diabetic team telling me I had gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy and she would be monitoring me. First of all this is my first pregnancy I had never been pregnant before and second I do not suffer from diabetes. I was then incredibly stressed that my blood tests had indicated I had gestational diabetes. Neither the midwife nor the nurse could explain how this error had happened. I had very little faith in the system after this. The parking at Stoke mandeville is shocking. There is simply not enough and it is very expensive. I arrived 20 minutes before a midwife appointment and could not find a space. My appointment was at 10 and I did not get a parking space until 10:30 after waiting in the A&E car park for someone to leave. This made me half an hour late. No wonder clinics are running late when half the patients are stuck driving round the car park!. There is not enough functioning equipment for midwives to do their job properly. During a routine appointment they were trying to find my babies heart beat. The Doppler was very crackly and the battery casing was broken and had been taped in with microporous tape. The midwife then went to find another one which didn’t even have a battery in! She then had to remove the taped in one and try and tape it into the second doppler. How can this be the case that the midwives do not even have functioning monitoring equipment to find babies heartbeats !? During a summer visit on a very hot day the air conditioning was on but it was an extremely hot day and they also had all the windows open. How can the air conditioning work effectively when all the windows are open letting in more hot air ? Lot of very hot uncomfortable pregnant women sat in a waiting room. No exclusive female toilets. All the toilets are used by both men and women. This is a maternity department why are there no female only toilets?. I don’t want to use a toilet where the seat is up and urine has been sprayed everywhere.

My husband came in on Tuesday to have an MRI on his head, he was absolutely petrified. The 2 members of staff were fantastic & helped him every step of the way, they talked him through each stage telling him how many minutes each scan was. I was also allowed to go in with him which helped, he was given diasipan to calm him, I know that he's probably got to have more but with there help & patience I know he will get through this. Many thanks you 2 from the bottom of our hearts as he had to have this scan.

Review titled Wonderful radiology dept

We attended X-ray today. Due to a misunderstanding of gp’s instructions we thought it was a walk in service. We were treated with such kindness by the staff who found a space for my husband to get his X-ray. He is quite poorly and it was wonderful to be treated with such kindness and respect.

Review titled Very helpful receptionist - thank you
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 07 August 2024
Went in for Diabetic Retinopathy with my elderly Mother. My mobile phone had no reception so I could not contact our lift home, after 40 mins of trying but no contact I asked the receptionist for help, she allowed me the use of the office phone and dialled the numbers for me as I could not see them well after the Retinopathy. Without her help we would probably still be there - thank you for being so kind, it does not happen in many other places.
