Review titled Underfunded, understaffed, under resourced
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 30 October 2024
I would like to say I am immensely grateful for the NHS in this country and all the staff that work there. However, my experience at Stoke mandeville maternity has been chaotic and stressful. I have had two midwife appointments cancelled and rearranged with less than 48 hours notice. Every time I visit I see a different midwife. No continuity of care or developing a relationship with a midwife throughout your pregnancy. After waiting 30 minutes for a blood test after my midwife appointment the HCA called me through. Why the midwife couldn’t have taken the sample during the appointment I am not sure. An hour after getting home I was then called to say my sample had clotted and I needed to come back today as the blood test had to be done on the same day as the scan for the results to be valid. This was incredibly inconvenient and cost me another £3:50 in parking. I was then phoned by a nurse from the diabetic team telling me I had gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy and she would be monitoring me. First of all this is my first pregnancy I had never been pregnant before and second I do not suffer from diabetes. I was then incredibly stressed that my blood tests had indicated I had gestational diabetes. Neither the midwife nor the nurse could explain how this error had happened. I had very little faith in the system after this. The parking at Stoke mandeville is shocking. There is simply not enough and it is very expensive. I arrived 20 minutes before a midwife appointment and could not find a space. My appointment was at 10 and I did not get a parking space until 10:30 after waiting in the A&E car park for someone to leave. This made me half an hour late. No wonder clinics are running late when half the patients are stuck driving round the car park!. There is not enough functioning equipment for midwives to do their job properly. During a routine appointment they were trying to find my babies heart beat. The Doppler was very crackly and the battery casing was broken and had been taped in with microporous tape. The midwife then went to find another one which didn’t even have a battery in! She then had to remove the taped in one and try and tape it into the second doppler. How can this be the case that the midwives do not even have functioning monitoring equipment to find babies heartbeats !? During a summer visit on a very hot day the air conditioning was on but it was an extremely hot day and they also had all the windows open. How can the air conditioning work effectively when all the windows are open letting in more hot air ? Lot of very hot uncomfortable pregnant women sat in a waiting room. No exclusive female toilets. All the toilets are used by both men and women. This is a maternity department why are there no female only toilets?. I don’t want to use a toilet where the seat is up and urine has been sprayed everywhere.

My husband came in on Tuesday to have an MRI on his head, he was absolutely petrified. The 2 members of staff were fantastic & helped him every step of the way, they talked him through each stage telling him how many minutes each scan was. I was also allowed to go in with him which helped, he was given diasipan to calm him, I know that he's probably got to have more but with there help & patience I know he will get through this. Many thanks you 2 from the bottom of our hearts as he had to have this scan.

Review titled Wonderful radiology dept

We attended X-ray today. Due to a misunderstanding of gp’s instructions we thought it was a walk in service. We were treated with such kindness by the staff who found a space for my husband to get his X-ray. He is quite poorly and it was wonderful to be treated with such kindness and respect.

Review titled Very helpful receptionist - thank you
Rated 4 stars out of 5

Went in for Diabetic Retinopathy with my elderly Mother. My mobile phone had no reception so I could not contact our lift home, after 40 mins of trying but no contact I asked the receptionist for help, she allowed me the use of the office phone and dialled the numbers for me as I could not see them well after the Retinopathy. Without her help we would probably still be there - thank you for being so kind, it does not happen in many other places.

Review titled Hospital Appointments Received via NHS App
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Sue - Posted on 15 July 2024
Would it be possible to give details of where in the hospital an appointment is taking place (on the invitation text) please?. My appt is in Community Diagnostic Physiological Measurement Service for Instance, but I've searched on the hospital website and cannot find out where in the hospital it is. Perhaps you could put it in brackets after the name eg (Ward 6, 3rd Floor, C Building) for example. This is just a suggestion by the way, not a complaint, I love the NHS App and think our hospitals Stoke, Amersham & Wycombe are fantastic.

Review titled Excellent care
Rated 5 stars out of 5

I have just spend the last 7 months on ward 17, gastro and I couldn’t have been provided with better care!! Staff were so lovely, comforting and were always smiling and made me feel well looked after. They did their best to accommodate my complex needs and would do anything if something wasn’t right. They worked together like a family rather than individuals. They looked after their students well too. I learnt a lot from them and they helped me to understand medical parts of my disorder better. When I left, I got a lovely send off as was a little tearful having spent so long admitted. Some of the staff continuously went above and beyond and I will forever be grateful to them. They helped me feel safe at all times and were a shoulder to cry on when things were tough. I will never forget the staff on ward 17 and now I am moving onto my next placement more confident that I am worthy of help. Thank you to all of you and I cannot wait to come back and see you and show you all the progress I’ve made!!

Review titled Horrible experience in A&E and Acute medical unit
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 21 May 2024
My 92 year old mother was admitted to the Acute ward on Saturday 18 May 2024. Her lower leg was very red and swollen, she was diagnosed quickly with an infection (cellulitus), all good. Then she was given intravenous antibiotics and lots of blood tests given. My dad wanted her to come home but they insisted she be admitted. I reluctantly left her to take my dad home as his stoma bag needed changing. They said it was no problem as she would be there for hours anyway. When I get back an hour later she was in the acute medical ward. All her clothes were stuffed in a bag and she was dressed in a gown (how did this happen with no chaperone)? She has fairly severe dementia. Once again I reluctantly left her, I phoned a couple of hours later and the doctor said they had given her a brain scan (why? this had not been mentioned earlier and no permission was given for this. When I asked if they had sedated her they said not (how did they achieve this as she was pretty fidgity and distressed). I then asked if they had put a catheter in, silence, the doctor quickly ran off to cancel it. She was only supposed to be in for 1 night and she is quickly being made helpless. This was becoming terrifying. The next day they said she needed another whole day there so I reluctantly agreed but phoned at 10pm on Sunday night and the doctor agreed she could go home the next day. He said anytime from 7am. I am a long drive away and got there at 9am. I was met with hostility and suspicion the Sister objected and there seemed endless obstacles to discharging her. A stream of people came to interview mum, therapists about her walking, social services (?), a doctor who agreed she could go. We just had to wait for the paperwork, then someone confessed this could take until 5pm. I said I would take mum home and return for the paperwork. The ward was awful, no natural sunlight (confusing for normal patients let alone dementia), screaming patients. Someone constantly mopping the floor (wet floors with 92 year olds being made to prove they could walk). The whole ward was packed with varying assistants doing ridiculous jobs. There was absolutely no common sense and a dangerous blurring of consent. My mum seemed fair game and appeared to have no rights whatsoever. I would be very reluctant to let her enter this place again. An urgent review of these practices and consent needs to happen. Putting catheters in without asking is a serious breach of trust with relatives. I am still in shock about the horrific experience.
