Review titled Good service let down by long wait
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 12 November 2024
We arrived at 10 for a 10.15 appointment, waited 55 minutes to be seen. The consultation and subsequent tests were done very thoroughly and sensitively. At the end of the process - after nearly 2 hours - we were sent to the on-site pharmacy to collect a medication. The form was handed in and we were asked to wait. 20 minutes later an assistant said `there’s nothing written on this form, take it back to the clinic and ask them what the medication is’! We went back along to be told that the doctor had left! Eventually they found the order on the computer system so we went back to the pharmacy and, after complaining about the lack of communication (why didn’t the pharmacist simply ring the clinic?) we were seen in 5 minutes. Hospital pharmacies are generally known to be slow…but this was a farce! Pity really as everyone else was very efficient and personable.

I have tried 20 times today to cancel my Mother’s eye appointment Can’t even get into the queue to have my call answered Have now given up Maybe this is one of the reasons that so many appointments are not attended Although I do feel bad about failing to attend I have a very busy life and can’t spend it on the phone trying to cancel an appointment

Review titled Outstanding Care
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Jen - Posted on 17 June 2024
What a desperately important service the paediatric team at Sunderland provide. Such knowledge, care and expertise. My young son has been failed countless times in other hospitals, trying to get accurate eye tests. He has Down Syndrome and developmental delay and many sensory issues. He becomes very distressed during eye tests and vital, accurate, information about his sight has never been obtained. The team at Sunderland do such an amazing job, working with him, putting him at ease, using new technologies to help them get a better, clearer picture of his eye health and sight. We are so grateful to the team for their patience, skill and support. This specialist clinic is so important and should be protected at all costs. Thank you!

I have been attending this department for several years, for monitoring of angles and pressure in my eyes. I was seeing a new consultant, who was very pleasant and professional on this occasion. The technology used to assess my condition is so impressive, I felt very thoroughly examined Every member of staff deserves to be praised for providing such an excellent service, including those in medical photography

Review titled Positive experiences for both cataract procedures.
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Herbert Willis - Posted on 20 April 2024
I would like to convey sincere thanks to all the staff involved in my care, at my recent two cataract operations, at Sunderland Eye Infirmary. The two different surgeons, and teams caring for me, at the two procedures, did everything possible, to make me comfortable throughout. I have a chronic back problem, and was anxious about the position I would have to be in, during the operation. Everything possible, was done to put me at my ease, and to ensure that I was as comfortable as possible. The improvement in my sight, after the first operation, six weeks ago, was beyond belief. It is just over 24 hours now, since my second eye was done. My sight in eye two is already improving. I am watching TV, without wearing my glasses, which is remarkable. The eye drops procedures, following the operations was well explained, and we are coping well with that, at home. The two consultant surgeons really delivered an expert service, instilling me with much confidence. The care teams were truly outstanding. I could not have experienced a greater level Ievel of care, throughout. My sincere thanks, and congratulations to all, for providing a superb service. It is much appreciated.

Review titled Excellent adaptations made
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Liam - Posted on 22 January 2024
Hi I am writing regarding to my experience at the Eye hospital in sunderland my little boy who Is 5 attends here regularly. It is always a difficult experience for him as he is autistic and this can lead to many different issues at the appointment. In the time that my son has been attending the clinic the staff have all got to know my son very well and have made several changes to the way the appointments are run. I mentioned this to the consultant and he was very happy to hear that I felt this way. Although I was told that senior management disagreed with the way he decides to run his clinic and believes every appointment should be ran the same way. I strongly disagree with this suggestion and think that absolutely adjustments should be made instead of a " one size fits all approach " the adaptations that have been made throughout my sons time attending the clinic have helped me son so much and I think it would be awful if that was to change. Thank you
