  1. Review titled Slow and poor service

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Lee - Posted on 22 January 2024

NHS funded a taxi to take me to A&E due to severe back pain and unable to drive. Upon arrival I was sent to urgent care and had to wait over 5 hours (sitting among sick coughing and sneezing patients) to see the triage nurse who eventually told me to go home and take regular off the shelf pain relief. Many people came to urgent care after me and saw the triage nurse within 30 minutes and then the doctor and left well before me. I witnessed so many people arrive and leave whilst I was sat with severe back pain. No priority was put on the pain I experienced and the triage nurse showed no empathy whatsoever. I also contracted a viral infection during my visit by having to sit next to sick patients for 5+ hours.

  2. Review titled Hospital services abysmal incl dosa, ent, a&e, ward c33

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 06 February 2024

This hospitals abysmal. Suppose to have an operation last october on day of surgery it got cancelled because they found something that didn’t think was safe even tho the results of it 2 weeks prior in the first place I was told they were fine. they changed their mind half an hour before I was due to be put under. So re-scheduled… had my major ear operation 2 weeks ago… the whole thing was disgusting from start to finish. day of surgery (dosa) women at the front desk was rude, staff made my anxiety worse on the dosa ward. after surgery was moved to ward c33 never again. A different nurse would come in each time, pressing the buzzer as I was bleeding heavily from operation & it needed to be cleaned it was either ignored or to be told someone will be with you each time no one turned up an hour would pass I had to press the buzzer yet again to ask. The nurse that came in to help me go to the toilet she looked more frail than me & couldn’t even hold me properly. so I ended up going to the toilet on my own after that which I really shouldn’t have been. the next day I begged for painkillers for 5 hours as I hadn’t had any in 8 hours, I was crying no sympathy at all. I kept pressing the buzzer they kept palming me off. they then said you are going home this afternoon. I said I didn’t feel right & wasn’t ready at all, to be told another doctor would look at me before discharge. no one did, heard nothing for hours for a nurse to come in the room & say right your going home. I asked about a doctor to see me again she palmed me off said I was fine. not even 5 mins later another staff member comes in tells me to move off bed into a chair so she strip the bed ready for the next person. pretty sure no one even knew I left the ward when my partner came to get me because there was no one around. I was still bleeding heavily from the sight of the operation I knew it wasn’t normal. for a few days later to be in severe pain I went to a&e sat for 13 hours even though it wasn’t busy at all, test after test to finally be told that it was infected the sight of the operation go to the pharmacy to get antibiotics. they couldn’t figure out where my other pain was coming from. sat in the pharmacy an hour just to get 1 thing absolutely ridiculous. a&e staff were also rude didn’t do bloods properly the first time had to be done 3 times in a row. When I stated that I’ve just had an operation I couldn’t keep my eyes open I was that exhausted I was told well you can check yourself out. No sympathy, concerns or anything I was so close to just going home after 6 hours but I’m pleased I stayed as my infection couldve turned into sepsis. (family member convinced me to stay to get checked) Now I’m still waiting for my follow up appointment as dressing are suppose to be removed after 2 weeks asked if I had an appointment yet as one hasn’t came out in the post nothing. Clearly been forgotten about. I will never have another operation at this hospital & will avoid a&e if possible.

  3. Review titled Excellent level of care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Keith - Posted on 10 November 2023

I had to go to hospital after an issue with a wisdom tooth extraction as my tooth was attached to the jaw bone. From registering with reception, all of the way through the review process and up and to following minor surgery the level of care from all staff was of the highest level All very friendly and kept me up to date with my treatment plan. After treatment care was also excellent with staff attentive and providing all relevant information for my post op care.

I was an inpatient on ward c33 for removal of a possible cancerous tumour. All staff I encountered, both during my stay and in the clinics before and afterwards were amazing. My care was faultless, so a huge thank you to all of you

  5. Review titled Very mixed review

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 13 November 2023

Directed to urgent care by 111. Assessed quite quickly. Doc sent me for x-ray and gave directions. Sat in X-ray for ages with others coming and going until I asked. Told was in wrong place and I should be in ED x-ray. Someone took me round. Had x-ray. Went back to urgent care who couldn't find me. Told to ask in ED which I did to find I had been discharged! Such a mix up. 5 missed calls on my phone from a private number that I didnt answer because I was at hospital was actually the hospital trying to ring me. They didn't leave a message and discharged me. Terrible circumstances but I have to note the radiologists and receptionist at ED were brilliant, patient, helpful and empathic.

Every single person on b26 deserves a special mention for the outstanding patient care they give. Very welcoming and exceptionally patient focused, with caring and compassionate attitudes. Anything you ask is actioned and appropriately dealt with promptly and efficiently. The ward has great team spirit with such lovely people who treat you with dignity and respect. The consultants and doctors are all very dedicated and patient focused and give a genuine caring attitude towards your recovery. The ward manager and sisters are three lovely ladies who always find time to speak and put a smile on your face ! They say great leaders make great staff and this definitely shines. Thankyou every single person for making my stay so positive and my recovery so able I will always be thankful for everything you have done and the way I was treated whilst in your care.

  7. Review titled COVID excuse that is past its sell by date

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 06 October 2023

I am currently on the children's ward and though I cannot fault the staff who are friendly, informative and cannot do enough to help. I cannot understand why the facility room for parents to make beverages is not functional due to COVID. Parents are the least likely to be able to leave the ward due to having a child to look after. It makes no sense to keep the room closed, despite advertising it in the parent and guardians information file COVID is not a reason to enable parents and guardians the ability to self-care. In a time when cost of living is increasingly difficult and parents will be taking time out of work etc to look after their child. It makes no sense that they should pay for the cafe or restaurant when they will likely need warm drinks to keep them going. I felt guilty asking nurses for hot drinks, not because they were not helpful but because they are busy, when I can simply do this for myself!

  8. Review titled Fantastic Patient Care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Michelle Hill - Posted on 24 October 2023

I was a patient at the day surgery department for a hernia repair op. Each and every member of staff who helped me (and there were many) was kind, compassionate, caring and professional. I felt so looked after. I would like to say a particular thanks to my surgeon (who I didn't actually get the thank in person) and the fantastic anaesthetist who made me feel so calm and reassured despite my concerns having my first GA. Thank you all for your amazing care.

  9. Review titled Orthapedic kneecap.

Rated 1 star out of 5

by MichaelCrowe - Posted on 18 October 2023

Consultation in November 2022. My care web site states 20 week average waiting. I’m up to 48 weeks. Had op cancelled in July. Rang me at 2pm, to say op going ahead. Rang at 17:50 to cancel did not have staff. Had another date for 19th October. No communication on 18th to say if op was going ahead or not. Rang hospital, day care unit to see if op was going ahead, but they said it was cancelled on the 13th. Nobody bothered to let me know as I was preparing for op. Sunderland Royal hospital is an absolute shambles.

Attended minor illness dept with a relative, the receptionist was helpful and friendly, she was quickly seen and triaged by a nurse. she had some concerns so she ensured she was seen by a dr asap. After seeing the Dr she was sent to emergency care and had bloods and seen by a specialist. She was given treatment and sent home with advice and outpatient follow up, the receptionist, nurses and all the drs were extremely caring and professional. Excellent service. Thank you
