  1. Review titled Contact details

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Family Member - Posted on 26 April 2024

The Occupational Therapy Department has no listed contact telephone number, no voicemail to take messages, no contact email address to leave a message to request staff to make contact. The phone line is not manned so that calls are not answered. A system should be in place so that a message can be left for a member of the team to make contact.

  2. Review titled Worrying statements made

Rated 2 stars out of 5

Went there 4 days after a major operation, supposed to be on bed rest but felt unwell enough to come. Initial BP extremely high (193/109). Arranged a wheelchair for myself as unable to walk due to the operation, was then moved to a chair but the constant upright position led to severe swelling and pain. Second and third BP readings were extremely low for my baseline (130/71) which makes no sense as the lowest it has been for years has been 148/93 and that was only taken a few days ago after operation. So something wasn’t making sense at this point. The nurse said the initial reading was anxiety over being in hospital (no, I am more inclined to believe the first high one due to knowing my body/baselines). I became distressed over the pain and needing to be reclined due to type of operation (bed rest instructions/common knowledge to a lay person never mind medical staff) so was found a trolley. After this distress one nurse attitude became more coarse ( patient fussing, should pull her socks up minimisation). I’ve seen this at other places so nothing new there. On discharge I enquired about the sudden unexplained drop in blood pressure after years of high BP and was told the BP was good, most people would be happy. I am very educated despite my distress today and I know for a fact that individuals baselines should absolutely be taken into account, platitudes have no place in a medical setting where some people will go along with what they are told. I will be sure to speak to my GP immediately about this change and what could have caused it. While there a lady next door was told her symptoms were part of life (feeling breathless, calf and chest pain). This was by a doctor. The doctor I saw did most of the necessary tests, but unfortunately was not around to advise on the BP crash as the third obs were taken right before discharge. So for future reference: stop putting people in chairs who are unable to sit, and don’t make throwaway comments that could lead to negative patient outcomes. Also retrain on BP/check BP machines as diastolic BP dropping by 40 in 3 hours is an emergency, or at least nothing good, and I’m not medical just intelligent/going on common sense

  5. Review titled Wonderful staff but the toilets were shockingly disgusting.

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Catherine - Posted on 13 March 2024

I had to go to A and E after blacking out and stayed overnight in the Emergency ward (and part of the following day in the Women’s Day Unit). All the Doctors and Nurses I met were so kind, hard working and empathetic. In fact every single member of staff I encountered including the porters and cleaners were hard working and friendly. But, the state of the toilets in in Emergency ward are disgusting and added greatly to my trauma as I kept putting off going to the loo. There are no segregated toilets for Males and females, feeling so ill and bleeding heavily, having to encounter the disgusting smelling toilets with urine sprinkled on toilet seats and big puddles of urine on the floor & bins full to the brim. There seems to be no Evening toilet cleaning schedule on the Sunday I was there, yet they have a patronising poster with diagrams next to the sink telling you how to wash your hands! I felt like I was in a grotty pub toilet with the decades old smelly dirty facilities… Please, please invest in better bathroom facilities for your patients and a proper bathroom cleaning Rota for the 24/7 Emergency Unit.

  7. Review titled Calm and friendly but professional environment

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Catherine Cooper - Posted on 14 February 2024

Very impressed with the professionalism and calm friendly manner that the hospital dealt with a very worrying issue for me today. First time at this hospital - I have always been at UCH in the past but this was equally proficient and thorough and had a caring, relaxed feel - thank you everyone in A&E for alleviating the stress - I’m very grateful.

Have had a positive experience dealing with the team here. I had one of the most professional x-rays in my life and the team have been supportive and approachable thus far. The Drs and Admin have been second to none and accommodated me despite a lot of challenges.

I arrived for an appointment to review my breathing difficulties, the appointment lasted around 3 minutes. From the moment the consultant started talking there was a feeling I began to have that I was wasting the NHS time and resources

  10. Review titled Shocking!!!

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 31 January 2024

My dad has been in the Thoroughgood ward level 5 adult in patient department for over 3 weeks, he has had multiple surgeries while being in there and he’s experiencing a lot of pain and discomfort. He is unable to eat without using a tube. I went to visit him yesterday and I was appalled by the smell of the ward. It took so long for the nurses to clean a man that had soiled on his bed. Patients are walking around frustrated with their catheters and fluid bags hanging out looking for nurses to assist them with things. When they do find a nurse they get fobbed off. I asked for juice for my dad they said no as it had to be ordered in the morning. The ward is filthy even one of the doctors had to complain and he started dusting the place due to the patients with lung and breathing difficulties. They have several faulty nebulisers. It took a nurse one hour to go round the whole hospital to find a working nebuliser for a patient. The nurses lack empathy some of them mock patients. Rooms are like prisons. Other hospitals have a TV for patients that are admitted. This ward needs a good inspection! It’s disgraceful the way it is being handled.
