  1. Review titled Always welcoming, kind and supportive

by Roonie - Posted on 01 June 2023

Just wanted to say thank you to all the wonderful friendly staff at York hospital. I arrived at 4am with a very wheezy 18-month-old, but I have had a similar experience when I've been in before. Reasons they are awesome: 1) Always welcoming and kind - I can often get worried about wasting people's time which can put me off seeking help if I'm not sure how serious the issue is. Knowing that the staff are always happy to check my child over and kind when the problem isn't as serious as I thought means I do come in and get him checked out. This time I was really unsure whether we should be going in, but I'm very glad we did - he needed nebulisers and oxygen (I'm now on 6 hospital checks for this child and 3 times he's needed oxygen ) 2) Supportive of breastfeeding mothers, and of breastfeeding into toddlerhood. Examples from my latest visit: staff in paediatrics were very much following my lead on how much privacy I wanted, by offering privacy and giving us space to feed when procedures couldn't be done whilst feeding, but following my suggestion to use it as a distraction when doing some of the monitoring. This continued up in Ward 18 as well. Everyone also was making sure I stayed hydrated which I am very grateful for as I wasn't able to leave my son and get my own drink and he feeds a lot more when he's sick which makes me very thirsty. 3) Very clear about the process happening and what needed to happen before we could go home. This helps so much in planning care for our other child and generally being less stressed and able to concentrate on getting better.

Thank you for your kind words regarding the care you and your child received at York Hospital. It is heartening to know that all you were treated with such kindness and encouragement during what I am sure was a stressful time for you. Our staff work hard to ensure their patients receive the highest standard of care, and we appreciate your positive remarks about the treatment you received from the entire clinical team involved in your care. I have passed on your comments to the staff involved, which I am sure they will be very pleased to read. Thank you for taking the time to write to us to express your gratitude. Visited audiology today to set the wheels in motion to change my five year old hearing aids. The trainee consultant who treated me was overseen by a senior consultant who both from start to finish gave me very attentive treatment. I would just like to thank both people concerned and give a thumbs up to the service I received. Many thanks much appreciated 👍😁

  3. Review titled Making the simple, unnecessarily complicated

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 14 May 2023

Was required to attend triage for what should have been a simple blood pressure check and blood test at the request of community midwives (high risk pregnancy). Ultimately took over 7 hours. Not even an offer of some water during my entire stay and had to repeatedly provide my information and an explanation of why I was there. Priority treatment/care given to familiar patients. Lack of confidentiality around sensitive information. One midwife in particular had terrible bedside manner. Ended up breaking down to a very kind and sympathetic doctor; I was hungry, thirsty, utterly exhausted and just wanted to go home. Midwife's explanation was it was all because of "badgernotes" which, quite frankly, I watched the team obsess over with complete incompetence and at the cost of basic patient care. Not to mention the "security" guard who sat in patient/relative chairs on his phone the entire time, forcing other patients to sit on the floor- May as well have been paying me!

  4. Review titled Admin mistakes and poor communication

    by volanstq78 - Posted on 14 April 2023

Multiple admin mistakes, relentless chasing to get information about appointments, cancellations, consultant who did not action a referral for months following multiple phonecalls and emails, consultant who said they will not follow the advice of another specialist because they disagree. Now have 18 month chronic condition with no future appointment, no follow up and no treatment plan despite having seen a consultant. Relentless chasing to even get through to patient complaints. Errors in emails where I wonder if I was mixed up with another patient due to the information in the email.

  5. Review titled Very kind, gentle and reassuring

    by Catherine712 - Posted on 04 May 2023

My partner had to attend for an operation to remove her kidney stent. She has schizophrenia so was incredibly nervous. Staff on ward 27 allowed me to wait with her. They spoke to her with compassion to help reassure her. The theatre staff then allowed me to accompany her to the anesthetic room where she was put to sleep. At this point my partner was very anxious. The theatre staff were exceptionally kind, patient and reassuring to her. They went out of their way to put her at ease. Then, the two nurses looking after my partner when she was returned to the Day Unit again allowed me to wait with her until she was fit enough to be discharged. They were very kind, gentle and reassuring to her. They even gave me some ice cream which was very kind. All of these people played a huge part in putting my partner at ease and making the experience as stress free as possible. I am incredibly grateful to them.

  6. Review titled Really nice friendly staff sleep issues

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 24 April 2023

I am currently in the hospital with my daughter. I have to say that the care she has directly received has been excellent and the staff have been lovely but my review aims to highlight the effect this has had on myself and many other parents im sure. I am exhausted from the lack of sleep and food I've had. I cant leave her and obviously don't get offered hot meals so I've basically eaten very little in 48hrs. I don't expect the hospital to feed me but it's tricky when you have a two year old that won't let you go out of sight. I have an autoimmune disease and I'm deemed to be clinically extremely vulnerable. After the first night of being in so much pain due to my rheumatoid arthritis as i had forgotten my tablets in the rush and the noise of the other people in the room I was already shattered. Of course my daughter is the most important thing, not me, but after having such a poor night last night and hardly anything to eat I was hoping for it to be better this evening for us both as we were alone in the room. It's certain that this hospital stay will end up making me really ill and when we get home i will struggle to have energy to catch up with all the housework ive missed and to continue to care for her and my other children, but will have to do it all anyway. I realise some sleep deprivation is normal when your child is ill my issue comes from tonight's actions. After falling asleep at half past ten I was woken up with someone switching the main light on at midnight and another family coming into the room. While I understand this is sometimes necessary there are loads of empty rooms on this ward. I feel it's important that people are left to rest. The light was just left on which just showed no concern for us at all. I really didn't want to be awkward but did eventually just ask if I could turn it off again. The child that they brought into the room requires some treatment that uses a really noisy machine so once they started that off i have taken myself to sit outside the room on a chair for the night as I want to hear my daughter if she wakes but don't have to listen to the machine as loudly. I feel i would have been driven mad sitting in there not able to get back to sleep after being woken up. Perhaps if there had been the thought not to turn on all of the lights then i would have slept through it but as I struggle with sleep anyway there is no chance that i can now get to sleep so left sat on a chair waiting until the morning. The crazy thing is that actually for health, sleep is deemed as very important but those that are the most unwell are in hospital probably having the worst sleep they have ever had. I'm also concerned that the child sharing our room is coughing and I'm on immunosuppressant biologic drugs and steroids so it's not ideal for me to be in there anyway . While I understand hospitals are busy I do feel that staff should consider the sleep disruption for both child and parent and to use other rooms if available.

To the Ambulance staff, pulmonary investigation bay and wards 22 and 32. Competent and professional treatment, despite the strain of being understaffed, and nearly overwhelmed by cases.

  8. Review titled Poor attendance and practice

Rated 1 star out of 5

I drove my wife to the hospital because she could not move his knee (the knee was completely inflamed) at 7.00am. After 4hours and 20min nobody has seen her either scan the knee if it was broken, completely normal if you can not walk, apparently. Now we are going to see the hospital GP (possibly another3 hours to be attended). I would like to know how a GP can check if there is a fracture without XRays. Possibly she will be send back to XRays. Conclusion: if someone wants to die waiting to be attended, this is the best hospital in the world. Absolutely disappointed. Just expecting they will make my wife run to check if the fracture is serious.....

  10. Review titled NHS at its best

    by EmmaG57 - Posted on 31 March 2023

I attended York Hospital for a routine mammogram and would like to acknowledge the Mammographer for her exceptionally caring and gentle approach - I have a fear of the compression involved and the mammographer listened and was very reassuring and very gentle - NHS at its best.
