  1. Review titled Impressive!

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I approached A and E with great trepidation after all the recent news about wait times etc and was pleasantly surprised by the whole slick operation. Yes, I had to wait around for a bit but nothing like what I’d expected and once in the system it was an impressive operation with kind, attentive staff and everything was sorted on the day. Massive Thankyou!

  2. Review titled Hospital experience

    by likeablewr93 - Posted on 22 March 2023

I was sat in a waiting room to see the out of hours GP for 2.5hours and I noticed a lot of people coming and going after me, one of the receptionist also noticed this and went and told the GP. They said id be seen to shortly. Another hour went by and the receptionist came over and asked for my appointment card, they took it to their desk and eventually saw that no one had put me on the system. The gp came out and called my name about 40 minutes later and asked for my urine sample, which I told them I wasn't asked to do one. They gave me a pot and I went to the toilet. When I came out the GP told me to wait for 5 minutes as they were now just seeing another patient in my place but would be back in 5 minutes. Over an hour later I asked the person on the reception what was happening. They kindly went to check for me. The GP now had 5 more patients before seeing me. I was in need of help and needed to take my medicine but couldn't due to uncontrollable vomiting. I was told by a nurse at 10:37 that I'd be getting some anti sickness tablets. It is now 2:37 and i still hadn't been helped. I feel angry and annoyed, I know the NHS is understaffed, but I don't believe this is nothing to do with the level of staff, I believe it's to do with the incompetence of the staff and the lies I feel I was told. I was already feeling awful and being in this hospital has made me a million times worse causing my anxiety to be at an all time high.

  3. Review titled Wonderful care and great practice

I would like to say thank you very much to York’s accident and emergency department and to the msd ward for looking after me and helping me last night. The doctor, nurses and health care assistants were so friendly, kind and professional. They put me at ease when I was feeling really anxious and I felt constantly informed and up to date with what was going to happen next which made me feel a lot better and reassured. I was discharged early this morning and felt extremely grateful for my experience and wanted to say thank you again. You all do an incredible job and we are so lucky to have you.

Only Nurse in A&E waiting area 09.02.23 (next to xray dept) coping under extreme duress. Area full to capacity with patients, some with behaviours of severe distress. Your compassion and ability to carry on in the face of adversity was commendable. Very sick patients and no beds. 12hrs later, no beds. Thank you so much for looking after my sick mother (85yrs) and attending to so many more shouting out for your help. When you were verbally abused, because of waiting times, you carried on with a smile and composure. I saw you juggling patient priority, putting drips up, taking obs, instruction from doctors and trying to capture all in record keeping. All this and more knowing half way through your shift, you hadn't eaten, taken a break or as you told me had the chance to go to the loo. Thank you x

  5. Review titled Hit and miss

Rated 2 stars out of 5

nlike a lot of people I only go to a&e in an emergency! People need to be assessed at the door and where necessary told to go to a chemist or try a walk in clinic for minors, 111 dont help as they send everyone to a&e And it is not a family day trip. People need to be firmly told the whole family are not allowed to come in, my husband and 1 sat and sometimes stood when I came back from each ecg as, whole families/friends with the ill patient took up 5 or 6 chairs, no one asked them to wait elsewhere. The staff are overworked and the system is broken and in chaos which doesn't help me when I'm having chest pain. Seating is awful, the high up chairs are unbarable to sit on for 9hrs+. Who thought they were a good idea? information and communication is poor between staff, wards, departments and yourself and doctors can't agree what's wrong. The inefficiency of how the hospital is run and wasted resources is criminal. 16hrs waiting to be seen is normal in this hospital. I waited 12hrs after coming in by ambulance before seeing any doctor and in 44hrs I wasn't offered pain relief once, except in the ambulance I was offered morphine, cleaning and food services need looking at. As a vegan I was offered a banana that belonged to a nurse, a jelly and a tub of peaches in 44hrs. The toilets all stink, wards are grim. Mental health is sorely neglected.

  6. Review titled Terrible stay on the ward

    by indigogp57 - Posted on 24 February 2023

At first I was on the Surgical Assessment Unit, and the staff were really lovely, caring and couldn’t do enough to help. However, despite being a few bays away from the nurses station they were talking very loudly to each other and sometimes shouting down the corridor why people had come in and personal medical information about patients - and their name and bed number was always included, so you knew exactly who they were talking about. Then I was moved to Ward 14 (currently based on ward 25, however it’s the same staff and ward 14 and SAU share staff apparently). The staff nurse I met when I arrived was absolutely wonderful, they introduced themself and asked if I needed anything. The HCA was lovely, they were running about everywhere to get things done for people and was having a laugh with the patients. The problem came when night staff came on. There was one member of staff who was exceptionally abrupt with people, including myself. Several times overnight I was offered medication I had already taken recently (given to me by the nurse). There was a patient next to me that needed to use the toilet frequently throughout the night. Every time the staff came in, they spoke at full volume and made no attempt to speak quietly even though it was the middle of the night and the patient was whispering to them. They would put the patient on the toilet and then slam the bathroom door, and then leave and slam the bay door every single time. Then the same when they came to get the patient off the toilet. They would then move something away from the patient and smack my bed with it. No attempt was made for them to talk quietly outside the rooms either, so I hear them word for word when they said the patient was so annoying for pressing their buzzer all the time. Evidently, it seemed a sink was broken in the sluice or somewhere, because frequently staff would come in through the night just to wash their hands at the sink in the bay. They would again slam the bin lid down, then slam the door on their way out again. At about 02.00 am, 2 staff came into the bay and started having a conversation at full volume about who needed an IV putting up and which ones they would each do. I was then given more medication in a bun case, I explained I couldn’t have it because I’d already had the maximum amount of doses in the last 24 hours. The nurse realised this was the case and walked away. Then the doctor came in to see a new patient, again making zero attempt to be quiet or talk in a lowered tone. There were two doctors and they were having a laugh in the bay with each other before going in to see the patient. One of them seemingly got a phone call half way through, and answered it whilst in the bay and was talking very very loudly, and the other doctor was talking to the patient. They then stood in the bay talking to each other about what the next steps would be for this patient, and then left and slammed the bay door again. Then at 6 am I was given medication, and the person doing my observations never checked my temperature (stating they couldn’t find a thermometer but it didn’t matter). I asked for pain relief overnight so many times from 2 am, but was never given it. Day staff came on and again were lovely, the nurse apologised for the staff overnight. The nurse immediately gave me pain relief and then again offered me the same medication I’d had at 6 am. I explained I’d already been given it at 6 am, and the nurse stated this had not been documented in my medications chart. they apologised again. The PSO was wonderful and couldn’t do enough to help people and put a smile on their faces. Again the day staff were lovely! The last person I come in contact with was a nurse who was exceptionally patronising when I asked a question, and I actually left in tears.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Following an emergency referal, I was seen within 24 hours and received fantastic care from skilled physicians. Everything was explained clearly, concisely and I was totally reassured. Follow up and next steps were arranged and the staff who treated me are a credit to York Hospital and NHS. I want to thank everyone involved in my care.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Lucy - Posted on 26 January 2023

I was seen by the most gentle and kind doctor. It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in a hospital. Her manner was immaculate and she deserves so much praise. I felt safe and cared for, and I despite feeling very unwell she managed to make me laugh. Her smile is contagious, the world needs more people like her.

  10. Review titled The care shown during my dad's death

by GraphxG - Posted on 09 February 2023

I got the phone call everyone dreads getting, one that changed my life forever. My dad was dying and I had to get to York hospital to see him ASAP. I drove for 90 minutes just so I could hold his hand as he took his last breath and his heart beat for the final time. Looking back, I can remember the many members of staff who were nearby should we need anything, the nurses who spoke to my dad as though he was still aware and not being sustained by machines and medication. I remember the doctor who came and told us it was time, who reassured our whole family that my dad wouldn't suffer. They gave my dad the dignity he would have wanted right up until his dying breath, and then they held us as we sobbed. Some knitted hearts and a butterfly were placed with my dad, one nurse came to me and gave me the butterfly as she told me that since we had the same items, he wouldn't be alone. I'll forever hold this butterfly dear, but I'll never forget the compassion, kindness and absolute amazing way the staff helped us. Thank you York hospital ICU team and thank you York hospital A&E team.
