  1. Review titled Very good care at the hospital after slip on leaves

    by waltzyw65 - Posted on 01 December 2022

Early November my husband slipped on wet leaves and damaged his right arm. I took him to A & E at about 20.00 hours, he had an assessment by a triage nurse within 5 minutes of arrival, he was sent to Urgent Care where he was seen by a Nurse Practitioner within 10 minutes, she checked him, gave painkillers and sent him for an X ray, then back to the Nurse Practitioner who was very efficient and reassuring. She gave him a collar and cuff sling, painkillers, leaflets and an assurance that the Orthopaedic team would be in touch in the next few days. We left the hospital 2 and a half hours later. Fantastic service. Two follow up appointments a week apart were face to face appointments and X rays and again conducted efficiently by a Nurse Practitioner who was very experienced and reassuring. This all seems very good practice and you are to be congratulated for this. Well done.

    by tucanaxn66 - Posted on 23 November 2022

My daughter arrived at york maternity triage after her waters breaking then moved to delivery. She had baby next morning. The staff were fantastic from start to finish, the care and dignity they show to everyone is great. They all did an amazing job. It started off a quiet night then it got busy but they were constantly there caring for my daughter and myself and her partner. Fabulous bunch they are credit to all of them x

  3. Review titled Great practice

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Margaret Lee would like to say thank you to the consultant and team, that looked after her on being in their care with breast cancer. Being very worried about everything that was going to happen, while having the operation. I was soon put at ease when I arrived on the day ward. Everyone I came in contact with made me feel less frightened. The procedure was soon over, and I was back on the ward having coffee and toast. after which I went home. Thank you all

  4. Review titled Looked after amazingly

    by Himacha16 - Posted on 19 October 2022

I brought my adult son into A&E after he seemed to be having an adverse reaction a the vaccine. It was, as expected, very busy. We were seen quickly considering just how busy it was and an assessment was carried out. Initial bloods were taken and, what felt like almost immediately, the results were back, and one was very high. This then started an action plan to scan his lungs. Again this happened very quickly followed by another chat with the clinical practitioner who although relieved it was clear had chatted with colleagues and decided that with his blood level so high they had to do a brain scan as well. We were becoming quite terrified, but she explained why, explained the levels and how they couldn't in good conscience send him home without being thorough. We appreciated this honesty. It didn't seem possible but in the midst of all of this the department was getting busier, and then there was a power cut. Everyone carried on with generator power and a member of staff explained what was going on to everyone waiting. Things got fully operational quickly and his second CT scan was performed. Just over an hour later we were given the wonderful news that it was all clear. Throughout what cannot be denied was a scary day, we were looked after. Informed throughout. Looked after amazingly and really felt their joy as they were able to send my son home knowing there was nothing sinister. The fact that they didn't take the chance without full knowledge, despite all the pressures they are under we are grateful for. More than words can express. It was just one of those things but they weren't going to accept that until every stone had been overturned. It was an eye opener spending the day in the department. Their job is demanding and pressured and without a doubt can be incredibly sad. Thankfully for us, the fear turned to joy and we thank them all. From the receptionist, to the bloods lab, the CT scanning team, the cleaning team, maintenance and the team of Clinical staff thank you.

  5. Review titled Urgent ENT appointment

by Willamena - Posted on 17 October 2022

I went to GP for blocked ears twice as it wasn't getting better. He referred me to ENT Department as it was urgent. That was in April. I received a phone call the next day asking which hospital I preferred, Selby or York. I said Selby. I have just received my appointment today for the beginning of November in York! So much for the urgent appointment. Disgusting, I could have lost my hearing altogether.

  6. Review titled Admission procedure

    by sagittabt35 - Posted on 27 October 2022

In October 2022, I arrived at York Hospital by ambulance having suffered what was believed to be a heart attack. I was taken by the ambulance crew to A&E, where someone said we should go to SDEC. Which we proceeded to. After a short wait there, I was 'handed over' and the ambulance people left. I has assessed, had blood pressure tests and some bloods done for testing and was told to take a seat in the waiting room, in which there are about 12-15 chairs. After about 30 minutes I was asked to walk into a consultation room where I was told by a doctor that I had indeed had a heart attack and that I would need to have an xray. They then asked me to go to the x-ray department of A&E. I pointed me in the direction, gave me directions and told me to walk there, and to come back afterwards. I tried to follow the instructions. I was groggy and tired and had had a heart attack 3 hours earlier. I got totally confused and lost but managed to find my way back to SDEC. I spoke with a staff nurse and told her what I'd been asked to. She then led me to a point where she said to turn right by a vending machine which I could see, and that I only then had 30 yards to go to find the x-ray department. This I did, and I had my x-ray and then managed to retrace my way back to the SDEC waiting room. I suppose my complaint is that up to that point I had not been allowed to even walk to the ambulance. I had been either on a bed or in a wheelchair- and then it was deemed safe or appropriate to be told to walk to the x-ray department, unassisted, and really with no idea where I was supposed to be going. This, I felt, was wholly inappropriate and potentially dangerous. Unfortunately, I then had 24 hours of waiting in an upright chair in the SDEC waiting room until a bed became available in the CCU. I am not complaining about this situation, as I fully understand that beds are in huge demand and that CCU in York hospital is a small Unit. The care I received there, once I was admitted, was amazing and I am so grateful to the amazing staff there. Thank you

We aim to provide the highest level of care to all our patients and clearly on this occasion we failed to do that. Your comments have been forwarded to the Department so that they can review their practices in order to see how we can improve the care we provide. 7. Review titled Caring, patient, thorough and friendly.

by VegSoup - Posted on 13 October 2022

I arrived into York's A&E early on Saturday, in quite a lot of pain from my stomach and (later confirmed to be) appendix. Throughout my stay in A&E, later in the ward pre- and post-surgery to remove the appendix, the staff were caring, patient, thorough and friendly. They explained what they were doing, answered my questions, helped me with trivial requests which I wasn't able to sort myself, gave me options and helped me feel far less alone / miserable than I could have done. To get them out of the way, my only two critiques of staff would be: - Not great at fully closing curtains in the wards when I wanted privacy, as they would close them whilst walking away without noticing they didn't close fully. - Sometimes neglecting to fully say what the next step was - eg when I was admitted to the ward, I suspected it was because I was waiting for surgery, but being told in full would have been nice. Both of these mainly seemed to happen because they were so busy, constantly having a checklist to do for so many patients they were looking after. My other issue was that the A&E entrance was blocked off from cars due to construction work, requiring a 350+m walk from where I was dropped off, only to have another 50 - 100m inside the building. No wheelchairs were available, and if my partner had not been with me I may have had to crawl the way. Given that I was advised by 111 to walk as little as possible, that was far from ideal. That aside, I'd like to particularly mention the below things, which probably seem little but really added up. Sorry that I cannot remember any names at all. - Everyone who pushed my around on a wheelchair, who was gentle with bumps / turns and gave warning of upcoming turns. - The A&E(?) nurses who handled my move into the ward and kept me company whilst my partner had to go home to sort the dog. - The doctor and surgeon I saw before going to the ward who explained their understanding of the situation and my options. - All of the nurses and doctors on the ward throughout my stay, particularly the one who sorted my ECG at 2am for being so companionable at such an hour, all of the ones who took blood (especially the one who took three vials) for doing it so smoothly and explaining why, the nurse and doctor who responded so swiftly to my allergic reaction to the antibiotic, the one who remembered to come back to me 45 minutes later as he said he would, the one who inserted the cannula and the one who helped me when I was having difficulty peeing on the morning after the surgery. - The anaesthetist and surgeon who worked on me for explaining everything so clearly, especially with what to expect, and in good humour, and for putting me at relative ease. - The pair of nurses (?) who were with me in the recovery room for engaging with my possibly incoherent ramblings whilst sorting and explaining the follow up steps. - The consultant (and his entourage) who saw me a few times and explained next steps efficiently and answered my successive follow up questions. - The porters, health assistants and other positions I don't know who ferried me about, cleaned up after me and brought me my first, very welcome food in nearly two days. Whilst I was uncomfortable, in pain, exhausted and nervous throughout, I could not imagine how I would have felt without all of the care and attention of the staff, and this was just for a minor surgery - albeit my first one.

Thank you for your comments regarding the care you received in the Emergency Department and Surgery at York Hospital. It is heartening to know you were treated with such kindness and encouragement during your appointment. Our staff work hard to ensure their patients receive the highest standard of care, and we appreciate your positive remarks about the treatment you received from all the medical team involved in your care. I have passed on your comments to the staff involved, which I am sure they will be very pleased to read. Regarding your comments about the curtains and lack of communication before your surgery. I have forwarded those comments on to the Ward Matron so that they are aware of these issues and to brief their staff accordingly. I am also sorry to hear about the lack of wheelchairs available upon your visit. We do endeavour to provide a wheelchair to all patients that might need one, however at times of high demand this might not always be possible, and I want to apologise for that. You also mention the current building work at our Emergency Department. This is part of a large-scale project to improve the services we offer at York Hospital. Unfortunately, it is also causing a great deal of disruption at the present time and again I want to apologise for that. Thank you for taking the time to write to us to express your gratitude. We value and appreciate feedback from our patients and relatives and thank you once again for sharing your experience with me.

  8. Review titled Gynaecology team were fabulous

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Harriet - Posted on 10 July 2023

It was my first hospital admission and operation and the gynaecology team were all excellent, they were thorough, very efficient and kept me informed throughout. I couldn’t fault them, thank you very much! I did find the tough approach of the triage nurse in A&E to be unhelpful and lack empathy, but with this exception the other nurses healthcare assistants and students I encountered in A&E and ward 28 were all excellent and helped me through this time. Very grateful thank you!

  9. Review titled Fantastic care by the urgent Eye Clinic

by Nicolaw - Posted on 19 October 2022

I suspected I was suffering from uveitis again. I called the Eye Clinic at 2.33pm, my call was answered quickly and after a quick telephone triage I was offered an appointment at 4.45pm. I could have been seen sooner were it not for the fact I work over an hour away from the Hospital. Once I arrived at the Clinic I was seen by the nurse for a quick eye test and no more than 10 minutes later seen by the Doctor who, after a few tests confirmed the diagnosis and gave me a prescription to be dispensed at the Pharmacy. This is the fourth time I’ve had to use this service and each time I’ve been offered an appointment on the same day, staff have been friendly and it’s been an efficient service. Thank you to everyone in the Eye Clinic.

  10. Review titled Wonderful Service!

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Barbara Wood - Posted on 05 September 2022

I fractured my wrist on Saturday 3rd September and my husband drove me into your Accident and Emergency Department. The receptionist could see I was extremely stressed, in shock and great pain. I was attended to immediately and taken to a room where the nurses succeeded to remove my jewellery from my swollen wrist and fingers, follow by an X Ray to establish my wrist was fractured. The Doctors and Nurses could see I was in great distress and shock and gave me medication to calm me down and help me to cope. I then had a second X-Ray to establish the fracture was only in my wrist and not in my upper arm and also an X-ray on my chest because of my shallow breathing. I was taken back to the assessment room and had blood tests, temperature and oxygen levels taken and was given an ECG. The Doctors decided that I did not need an operation on my wrist and they manipulated the bones back into position, whilst the nurse set a back slab. All together the Doctors and Nurses were extremely kind and comforting and I am extremely grateful for the excellent service provided by all concerned. Thank you very much! Barbara Wood
