  1. Review titled Coventry Walsgrave - dreadful mess

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Julia Robinson - Posted on 29 June 2024

Coventry Walsgrave feels unsafe. Some staff appear to have been conditioned, to see patients as an inconvenience & have suppressed any caring gene they may have had. Before I go on, I’ll say that, there’ll be some good, talented folk & shining stars working at Walsgrave, but they're hamstrung by the colossal administrative mess. My review is based on a number of visits, for both myself & also assisting an elderly friend. Most of us have paid large sums in tax & NI during our working life, so it is not 'free care' as some suggest. Latest occasion, my elderly friend had a nasty head injury, & horribly confused at home. (also has heart failure & dementia) I tried to get an ambulance via 999. Was told it was a 9 hour wait for ambulance & it would be quicker to take friend myself. I felt tricked. Got there. It was like Fred Carno’s. No parking available near A&E. Chaos. Signs saying you’d be fined if you park in wrong place. Friend couldn’t walk. Fainting, pain, massive bruises all over her face. Tried to get a wheel chair. None. No-one to ask. A member of public said I could rent a wheel chair from a machine using my credit card. Nightmare to work out (I'm autistic). Receptionist in main area was miserable. Felt treated like a criminal. Told us to go to minor injuries. A rather nicer person took my friend up to A&E. Also porter agreed to return rented wheelchair. Let me describe A&E-Hottest day of the year. A nurse barking in a stern voice that we all had to wait at least 14 hours to be seen. It was rammed. No spare seats. Got my elderly friend a chair and she was crying. Man, opposite who told us he had a huge hangover was vomiting into a paper hat. A young girl was laid flat out on the floor on a towel. We saw at least two people crash in front of us whilst there. Old folks covered in blood, confused, sat in chairs. I got my friend food & drink from Smiths. Worried she faint again. People with broken bones claimed they’d been there hours with no pain relief. One patient with heart failure, said they'd been there 24 hours waiting for a bed. The cherry on top of this horrible pie is that we seemingly can’t hold anyone accountable. Big hospitals have failed. I used to be an HR Pracitioner in NHS. Not unaware of challenges. But one way to solutionize is to shut Cov down & go back to smaller local hospitals & safe, caring practice. I’ve used a hospital in a third world country. It was not as bad as Walsgrave. Nb – Got a text on my phone to say my wheelchair was not returned properly. So already stressed, as they had my credit card, I had to ring the wheel chair rental company. They asked me did I take the wheelchair serial number. Who the heck takes a wheel chair serial number!? I was trying to get really ill patient into A&E. I've seen Cov Hospital responses in newspapers saying things like, ‘we know it’s frustrating’ Using minimizing language like that to describe dire treatment is gaslighting us & not facing up to safety issues & poor care.

  4. Review titled Awful - GP Referral to A&E

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 21 May 2024

GP referral, the waiting room is tiny noisy, and breaches health and safety as there is no room to move in the aisles and 2 toilets which are multisex smell rarely cleaned considering how busy the waiting room is. Staff on first meeting clearly do not enjoy their job as they clearly make it known GP referrals are not welcome to A &E which is concerning when your GP has clearly told you to get to A&E!! Very concerned with how small the ridiculous waiting room is when patients are coming in wheelchairs and there is no room for them to wait safely. Incase of an evacuation you wouldn’t be getting out quickly at all!! Staff very unhelpful when waiting to be seen, they seem to forget people are human beings needing compassion and empathy. Hard of hear Very likely to miss being called and enduring a prolonged wait. If only staff could understand how hard it is waiting when I’ll to see an Emergency doctor. I’d rather fly directly to Australia in economy class without being allowed to go to the toilet than suffer the treatment of staff at A&E again. Whilst the Dr’s are brilliant his colleagues let his department down miserably!

  5. Review titled Exceptional group in children’s A and E

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Atul Sharma - Posted on 23 May 2024

The whole medical team that looked after my son son were exceptional from start to finish. A special mention to the first doctor that made my son feel so relaxed as well as myself and my wife too. All the nurses were excellent too, including the last consultant we spoke with was fabulous too. True assets to the NHS Hats off to the whole team. The only bad experience was the lady at reception. She should be more welcoming dealing with concerned parents rather than being abrupt and condescending

  6. Review titled Amazing Children’s A&E

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Zoe - Posted on 31 May 2024

Had to take a trip to Coventry a&e this afternoon because my daughter unfortunately cut her chin open. From start to finish the staff were incredible, such polite people. The doctor in particular was lovely and kind and took her time to gain my daughter’s trust before assessing the wound and gluing it back together. We were in and out in under two hours which I think is fantastic!

  7. Review titled Great Department

Rated 5 stars out of 5

    by S. Thompson - Posted on 08 April 2024

Whenever I visit Respiratory Clinic I am always happy with my treatment. The Doctor is one of the nicest and most thorough doctors I have ever seen. The nurse taking my blood pressure was equally as nice. As previously mentioned pity all departments are not the same.

  8. Review titled Very difficult to make contact

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Judith Pandazis - Posted on 04 April 2024

I called the switchboard with an issue re an appointment. The operator told me that they would seek advice from a colleague - after 2/3 weeks still no reply/action. I called again re the same issue, three times in one day, and each time the phone rang out for a long time with no one picking-up. I rang the following day and asked for Clinic 9. The phone was answered by someone who went to find a specific phone number for me but after 5 minutes I hung-up believing that we may have been cut-off. I started again! This time the phone at Clinic 9 wasn't answered at all after waiting for 10 minutes.

  9. Review titled Brilliant service and care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Nicola Shoebridge - Posted on 18 May 2024

I was admitted with an unstable ankle fracture. I was in pain and anxious. I received amazing care from the orthopaedic team, theatre staff, ED and the wonderful nurses and HCAs on ward 53. I was fully informed of all the procedures that took place and my comfort seemed to be made a priority. I can not thank everyone there enough for making a very traumatic event much more tolerable.

  10. Review titled Communication support needs for autism abhorrent

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Andy - Posted on 08 March 2024

Was referred to Coventry hospital for neurology. Emailed the P A L S team several times to ask for assistance, explaining that I was autistic and requested some reasonable adjustments that they could provide to help with my communication / information needs. All emails failed to receive a response for a number of weeks. After several more attempts, finally I received an email informing me that the neurology department, who I required information from, would be in touch within 10 working days. Which was unacceptable and inefficient regardless of if a patient is autistic or not but for me who requires certainty, clarity and immediacy - this was not meeting my needs. I pointed this out and all emails were not responded to. The 10 working days came and went and no communication arrived from either P A L S or the neurology department. Therefore, I sent several more emails over many weeks and pointed out that reasonable adjustments should not be ignored. All emails ignored. This all happened over a period of about 2 months. I had been trying to access information, help and support for 2 months! Eventually I gave up and informed them that I would ask my doctor to refer me to another hospital as Coventry was completely inaccessible and shut off to communications with me, despite many, many emails sent over the course of 2 months. I informed them that I wished to be discharged due to my needs as an autistic patient being obscenely and blatantly ignored and that I would go to another hospital which was inclusive and supported equality and neurodiverse patients. Something Coventry hospital are a million miles away from ever doing. A few weeks later I received an appointment letter through the post but not one letter, but two! Two identical letters were sent to me and they say the N H S don't waste resources! This was after informing them that I had discharged myself and no longer wished to be seen there. On the appointment letter was an email address for outpatient appointments to use if patients needed to let the hospital know of a change in their circumstances. I emailed and it returned as undeliverable saying that the email address was no longer in use! This hospital and it's administration and management is akin to Billy Smarts and I would not choose to have any dealings with this hospital if you value your sanity or if you have a need to find out any information about your treatment. It is a circus. Given the N H S wastage on anything and everything these days completely unrelated to healthcare such as energy saving light bulbs to save the planet or endless inclusivity and diversity initiatives (which always seem to exclude autism), the only thing I am surprised they haven't done is built a 'big top' onto the main entrance building.
