Review titled excellent care
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by BYRON DOBSON - Posted on 20 February 2025
I was seen by a heart surgeon at UHCW at least 18 months ago after being referred by a renal specialist. The heart surgeon stated my tests had shown my mitral valve was leaking and surgery was necessary to correct the problem. The news did come as a shock to me as I believed I had not experienced any symptoms. However on reflection there were times I did become breathless but I assumed this was because my fitness levels were dipping and didn’t think it was medically related. Subsequently, I followed all guidance and advice given to me and attended all medical appointments. However, as the end of 2023 approached my symptoms, such as swelling feet, ankles, legs, breathlessness and sleepless nights, became increasingly worse. I was able to see the heart surgeon about my decreasing health and was admitted into UHCW and had surgery at the end of February 2024. Most of what took place after surgery remains much of a blur to me as I was in the complete care of the medical team on the Critical Care ward for over three weeks. From conversations with family and friends the care I received while in Critical Care was impeccable. The medical team provided an exceptional level of care and concern for me during my period of vulnerability and trauma. Visitors emphasised to me how the staff demonstrated their care, performance of their duties, their overall professionalism and their behaviour towards those who visited or phoned me with the upmost respect and diligence including being very approachable and compassionate to my needs. Additionally, my recovery was bolstered by staff when I left the Critical Care ward by ensuring I had ample and sufficient meals and drinks that aided my recovery and making every effort to make me ‘feel better’ by engaging in conversation and being patient with me. My needs were met and I felt safe being on the ward as nothing was an issue to ensure I was relaxed and confident with the care provided and the condition of the ward. In summary The medical team (surgeon, physiotherapists, doctors, cardiac team, nurses, cleaners etc) were all knowledgeable in their roles, kind, responsive, compassionate, diligent, gentle, joyful, respectful, skillful, patient, considerate and attentive. This team of dedicated individuals helped to improve my health and build my confidence so I could be discharged home with all appropriate equipment in place. I am truly grateful and appreciate the energy given by UHCW staff to reduce the trauma my body and mind experienced during my admission. Consequently, I can say that UHCW have a great team of people they can be proud of (despite the pressures the NHS is under) who rose to face the challenges and delivered on expectations to ensure my wellness. I hope UHCW will continue to do what I have seen is the best side of health care and be fortified by its strength to provide hope and possibility. I received and witnessed the best care I could have wanted. So from me, my family and friends God bless you all.

Review titled Communication support needs for autism abhorrent
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Andy - Posted on 08 March 2024
Was referred to Coventry hospital for neurology. Emailed the P A L S team several times to ask for assistance, explaining that I was autistic and requested some reasonable adjustments that they could provide to help with my communication / information needs. All emails failed to receive a response for a number of weeks. After several more attempts, finally I received an email informing me that the neurology department, who I required information from, would be in touch within 10 working days. Which was unacceptable and inefficient regardless of if a patient is autistic or not but for me who requires certainty, clarity and immediacy - this was not meeting my needs. I pointed this out and all emails were not responded to. The 10 working days came and went and no communication arrived from either P A L S or the neurology department. Therefore, I sent several more emails over many weeks and pointed out that reasonable adjustments should not be ignored. All emails ignored. This all happened over a period of about 2 months. I had been trying to access information, help and support for 2 months! Eventually I gave up and informed them that I would ask my doctor to refer me to another hospital as Coventry was completely inaccessible and shut off to communications with me, despite many, many emails sent over the course of 2 months. I informed them that I wished to be discharged due to my needs as an autistic patient being obscenely and blatantly ignored and that I would go to another hospital which was inclusive and supported equality and neurodiverse patients. Something Coventry hospital are a million miles away from ever doing. A few weeks later I received an appointment letter through the post but not one letter, but two! Two identical letters were sent to me and they say the N H S don't waste resources! This was after informing them that I had discharged myself and no longer wished to be seen there. On the appointment letter was an email address for outpatient appointments to use if patients needed to let the hospital know of a change in their circumstances. I emailed and it returned as undeliverable saying that the email address was no longer in use! This hospital and it's administration and management is akin to Billy Smarts and I would not choose to have any dealings with this hospital if you value your sanity or if you have a need to find out any information about your treatment. It is a circus. Given the N H S wastage on anything and everything these days completely unrelated to healthcare such as energy saving light bulbs to save the planet or endless inclusivity and diversity initiatives (which always seem to exclude autism), the only thing I am surprised they haven't done is built a 'big top' onto the main entrance building.

Review titled Children A&E waiting hours
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Isabel Montoro Rodriguez - Posted on 25 February 2024
My 2 years old son and I spent 11 hours at the a&e last Wednesday. We wait for 6 hours to be seen by a doctor and 5 hours for test and results. I have to say that the doctors and staff were excellent. However, it’s absolutely ridiculous to wait for 6 hours to be seen by a doctor. We arrived at 3:30pm and we left at 2am without the treatment because the pharmacy of the hospital was cloaed during the night!!!!! I have to come back at 8:30am to collect my son’s medication, just a few hours later. How is it possible that an University's Hospital with A&E - children and adults - hasn’t the pharmacy open 24 hours??? The medication wasn’t available in any other pharmacy, just at the hospital. Please, stop playing with our lives, the waiting hours and close a pharmacy hospital are wrong decisions and they must change!! The doctors and staff are also fed up of these ridiculous decisions.

Review titled Waiting times
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 16 October 2024
I’ve been waiting for 38 weeks for a referral to the ENT department and the average waiting time is 24 weeks and I’m still waiting. It’s just hugely disappointing and frustrating that I’m still waiting to see someone given what I was told after being seen by three doctors. This service is just unreliable and I’m paying taxes for what exactly?

Although I had to wait almost a year for the procedure I must say that the service given at my appointment at St Cross was excellent. The team that looked after me were fantastic in all areas. I would like to say a special thank you to the theatre team who put me at complete ease during the procedure. A big thank you to each of you who looked after me.

Review titled Crazy set up
Rated 3 stars out of 5

Arrived in A and E and my immediate thought was full house. A person's name is called to see whoever and then they're told to go back and sit in A and E. By that time more people have arrived meaning there becomes a shortage of seating. There's hardly much room for anyone in a wheelchair either. One thing I also observed that people accompany a patient were occupying a seat. Due to the environment being a rather small space all seating should go to the patient.

Review titled Amazing staff
Rated 5 stars out of 5

A couple of weeks before Christmas I had an ectopic rupture at just before 6 weeks pregnant and as such required emergency surgery. It was late in the evening and I believe I was the last surgery that my surgeon preformed that day (a very long day of surgeries as I found out the next day) I am extremely grateful to him and every single member of staff who looked after me - they are amazing people! As are the staff in reproductive medicine, they are so very lovely!

Review titled Unorganised chaos
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 29 November 2023
My stay of 12hrs!! Waiting room has been made smaller.. why? No space for wheelchairs, not enough seating, people were made to stand for 12hrs or sit on the floor. No cleaners for the whole time, 60+ people using 2 toilets that were revolting. Cups/sick bowls under chairs. Sick on floors not cleaned up properly. Shockingly rude staff/nurses in the waiting/triage area who were Extremely unhelpful and lacked empathy towards the people sat in pain. Utterly Failed system they’re running. Zero welfare for the patients suffering in their care and unwilling to help when asked. What I witnessed was heartbreaking. As a human being choosing to do that job, Do better
