  1. Review titled Unsafe negligent “care”

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Hannah - Posted on 02 July 2023

Attended A&E following being sent across from Rugby hospital with a referral letter which is completely pointless as you still have to wait and the receptionist didn’t even want to see it! No wheelchair available when I arrived so had to wait for one to be found then offered zero help from the nurse despite me explaining my partners serious condition and total inability to walk. Absolutely appalling treatment from staff my partner was left sat in a wheelchair screaming and crying in pain for over two hours. When I tried to speak with staff about this I was dismissed with a snotty “we don’t have any beds” despite my partners symptoms being a potential spinal compression. The waiting room itself was absolutely filthy, heaving and stunk. Triage clearly have no idea how to prioritise patients as people who were walking, talking and even smiling were seen to before my partner who was writhing and shaking his pain was so unbearable. After questioning staff again he was taken through to be given gas and air and again was placed in the “fit to sit” bay despite knowing he has degenerative disk disease, two previous spinal surgeries, could not walk talk or move due to extreme pain and all the classic symptoms of a potential compression. Luckily another nurse who was seeing to another patient took pity and put him in the room next door with low and behold a free bed!!! Wasn’t seen by a doctor for hours, initially said about an MRI then said oh actually let’s just give you some more drugs and see how you are. Was in a majors bed for 28 hours not given a blanket or pillow despite asking several times and provided with no food, never even offered. This hospital is not only negligent it is downright unsafe if you ever need emergency medical care go somewhere else they are an absolute disgrace.

Saw a lovely doctor today. Explained everything to me. Lovely manner. Hope I can remain under his care. Came away feeling fine. It does make one feel better when the consultant is helpful and pleasant. I say this everytime, shame not all Consultants are the same.

  7. Review titled Requests for info on experience of UHCW departments

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 27 June 2023

I have used your services twice in the past month, on both occasions I have been well cared for and satisfied. However, after each visit I have received a text message from UHCW NHS Trust asking me to rate the service by replying 1 for Very Good, 2 for Good etc. I replied to the first request and discovered that to do so cost me £2. I then received a follow-up text asking me to put into words why that score was given. Firstly, why are you using a service which costs patients £2 per text to reply? Secondly, if there is no alternative then why not ask for not only a number between 1 and 5 but also supporting text for the number given in the first message thus reducing the cost by 100%? I have had the same text following my second visit and chose not to reply (on limited funds, spending £2 x however many texts you require from me per hospital visit is not an option!). I have since been chased for a reply! Surely feedback could be requested and supplied in a different, free way? I would love to help your efforts to maintain/improve your service but really don't want to pay to do so. It does make me wonder if you actually do want the feedback or if this is just an exercise to show you have requested it, knowing very well that it often won't be given!?

  8. Review titled Absolutely disgusting

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Mrs Warner - Posted on 23 May 2023

15 hour wait in A&E with a cardiac issue before being given a bed in Majors (I had to demand to see the dr in charge in the end due to the miscommunication/inability to communicate information, I saw 3 different Doctors 1 of them twice (he had the correct plan from cardiology which was initially followed then abandoned ? As to why) not one of them repeated the same thing twice! A hca took my obs and told me I was in normal sinus rhythm - I was anything but in normal sinus rhythm. I'd like to know what Dynamap shows normal sinus rhythm. A lady waiting to be seen vomited profusely all up the wall over the chair and floor in the waiting area. That was left there for more than 2 hours before anyone came to clean it up. The poor lady was sat with no attention at all for a period of time offered a vomit bowl too late and then given a gown to sit in, that a&e waiting area was freezing cold. Once given a bed in Majors I was attached to a heart monitor, I pressed my call bell because I needed the toilet - it rang for an hour and nobody came so I detached the monitors and went to the toilet, I'm 55 years old I'm not going to sit and wet myself because someone cannot answer a call bell!!! At 6:20 in the morning my blood pressure was extremely high I spoke to a nurse who came into my pod and asked her for my regular Antihypertensive medications she declined despite seeing my blood pressure telling me they weren't due until 8am I had to argue the point until she said she'd ask a dr to change the time so I could have them. This should not have happened, as a nurse she should have been asking the drs for a time change on the chart so she could do something about my blood pressure so that I didn't have a stroke! The security doors which prevent people from just walking in and out of the unit weren't locked which meant staff were at a very serious risk of abusive patients or relatives. We watched several people just walk through those doors all of whom had the potential to seriously abuse staff. This was reported to a nurse who was stood by the entrance who then checked the door and then reported it on further this then took too long a time to be attended to and sorted out. Dirty toilets & no hand soap in the toilets in the waiting area, no cups on the water fountain. The vending machine stoped allowing the use of cards absolutely rubbish when you have no cash!!! Basically an a&e that is completely unfit for purpose filthy dirty with uninterested staff, staff who can't or won't follow instructions from a cardiology team, staff who don't know what they are talking about and staff who are broken by abusive patients/relatives. All in all an absolute disgrace, more effort care and attention from management is needed. Management team get off your backsides and take a trip into your own a&e and sit there for 15 hours and experience what the public go through honestly you're in for a shock unless of course you know and just have your hands over your eyes and ears.

  9. Review titled Patient choice

by Patientcareandchoice - Posted on 12 May 2023

Supported husband to have surgery this morning. On arrival husband was understandably anxious and has PTSD thought he would arrive at urology as that was the department his surgery was. I redirected him to day surgery with the support of main reception. We entered the day surgery unit it was very busy and an enviroment he really struggles with. Although being asked to be there for 7am, the staff were not prepared for patients. They stood there as the system was starting up. I sat with my husband to keep him calm. He booked in eventually and staff were efficient. A patient asked if their wife can stay with them, and the response was of course. So I reassured my husband. They called my husband's name and my husband heard a completely different name, I prompted him to approach and went with him to keep him calm. I was told that I can't come with him. I was a little startled at the tone. My husband froze and I turned to leave. The staff member then shouted if we have our number. There are a couple of improvements that I feel would support a more caring person-centred approach: Firstly, patients are not cattle and should be dealt with as individuals, asked what their choice is, check if they have any needs that would need to be considered to ensure they are less anxious, if not possible to have a loved one stay then politely explain why. Better still write in letter sent out loved ones can't stay and ask patient to call for individual circumstances. (I have been told in the past to leave an adult with learning disabilities, only to be called 2 mins later to have me return to support) this would make it very clear to both parties the individual circumstances. I can think of many reasons someone might need to support a loved one - e.g dementia, physical disability, learning disability, mental health to name a few. Secondly, maybe day surgery departments could not ask for every patient to arrive at the same time. This provides a very difficult environment for already anxious patients and staff. Why ask for patients to arrived at 7am if the system takes 15 mins to start up, this doesn't give the impression of preparedness and calm, much needed for patients having surgery. Whilst waiting for the system to start up, everyone stood waiting, then the receptionist told us we can book in and 30 patients all rushed to the desk to book in, like if they were first to the desk they would be first operated on. Rather, call the first 3-5 people by surgery list/dept list to have people remain calm. I just think this could have been better in ways to benefit the patients and show care.

  10. Review titled Great ward - wonderful staff!

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Emma Gudgeon - Posted on 25 May 2023

I was on labour ward for an induction and then the birth of my son the following day. Nothing was too much for the nurses and doctors I had the pleasure of meeting during my time on there. The toast was delicious! And it was on tap with a great cuppa to compliment. Bed side manner of staff was always professional, kind, caring and empathetic. The nurses who took care of me,my husband and son were brilliant! And I am very thankful. One nurse in particular kept the atmosphere light and funny. She was a delight to be around with her bubbly character and essential to my experience with her knowledge and care!
