  1. Review titled Endoscopy unit all Nurses and doctors brilliant

Rated 5 stars out of 5

    by John L - Posted on 19 December 2022

I would just like to say thank you to the nursing ladies and staff who gave me a Gastroscopy on 18-12 2022, you were all fantastic and explained everything you were going to do and kept an old man at ease. ( I must say it was a lot better than the ones I had over 30 years ago.) A bonus now that you get a print out report for yourself. Very well done ladies and thanks again for your kindness from a very grateful patient.

  2. Review titled Disappointing Service, well below standard

Rated 1 star out of 5

Husband was admitted 4 days ago, still hasn’t had food as no one can make a decision whether to do surgery or not. Staff from the ward clerk to nursing staff are rude and give minimal care and attention, no communication between doctors and patient. Least caring group of staff I have ever come across in my life. No faith or trust in any of them. Very concerned about the welfare of my loved one.

  3. Review titled Room for improvement

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Mrs Gillian Harrington - Posted on 11 November 2022

My 96-year-old mother had to wait in a draughty corridor for two hours during which time she had her bloods and blood pressure taken, before she was moved to a cubicle. She then waited for a further two hours, with a suspected fractured hip, and only received any attention when she passed out on a commode, when she was manhandled back onto the bed like a slab of meat. When I asked why she hadn't been sent for an x-ray yet, I was told one hadn't been ordered because she had been admitted with abdominal pain and not with a possible fracture; I assume this was because the nurse who had supposedly triaged my mother had never actually examined her or asked her any questions concerning why she had come to Accident and Emergency. At no time during the five hours that she was in the department was she examined either by a nurse or a doctor until she was admitted to the Monitoring Ward, where the staff were kind and caring, asked her what the problem was and ordered an x-ray. Although the x-ray was inconclusive, a later CT scan showed she had an arterial bleed into her stomach and was later admitted to a ward. I would hate anyone to have the same experience as my mother had. She was not the only one left in a corridor - I counted eight trolleys with people in different states of distress. The problem is clear- too many patients, not enough staff and a failing system, with paramedics having to wait hours to hand over their patients. Nurses seem to have been forced to spend a lot of their time working on a computer instead of spending time tending to their patients. The system needs to change, both for the patients and the staff that work within the hospital.

  4. Review titled Urgent care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Leigh - Posted on 13 November 2022

We had to use the 111 service for the first time today. The call handler was excellent. We got an appointment for 45 minutes time at the UHND Urgent Care Service. We waited just 10 minutes and the doctor we saw was so good with my daughter. So grateful for this service and it exceed my expectations today. Thank you

  5. Review titled Terrible Wait Times

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 17 November 2022

I spent 8.5 hrs in this hospital because I waited 7.5 hours in the A&E after an hour in the Urgent Care. It was also not communicated to me what line I was waiting for in the A&E, and I would have been better off going home rather than taking the Urgent Care doctor’s referral. The nurses are also very rude and hard to communicate with- when one was drawing my blood and I tried to give some medical background she acted very brusque. Also, the waiting room was dirty with a coffee spill.

  6. Review titled Excellent Service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by William Jackson - Posted on 06 November 2022

On the 3rd November I attended the hospital stroke unit. The young lady doctor listened patiently and carefully to all my concerns and then acted decisively to check and rule out various possibilities while explaining in detail her thoughts and conclusions. She then explained in full the medication and treatment that would follow and I left the hospital feeling very optimistic that, after 18 months of not knowing what my problem was and, seeing people at other medical facilities and not been given any proper tests, someone had finally acted decisively and, hopefully brought closure. I can't thank and praise her and the hospital enough for what was done and the hope that they have given me.

  7. Review titled Outstanding Midwife

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Dalglish Dixon - Posted on 10 January 2023

Arrived at the hospital knowing I was ready to give birth, however the original midwife checking me was quite dismissive about me. They were understanding but admitted that they were willing to send me home had a doctor not come and told her I was fully dilated. However, it was a change of shift so a different midwife came to introduce themself. This person was extremely compassionate and kept me well informed of the process and steps we were going to take to deliver my child safely. It was a natural birth that happened fairly fast and the midwife delivering was more than professional but made me feel relaxed in what can only be described lightly as extreme discomfort. This midwife ignored any methods I used to try and deal with the process (I.e foul language) and continued to prioritise myself and my child’s needs. I personally believe I couldn’t have had such a great experience had this specific midwife not been there to deliver. The aftercare was sensational, always checking on me and encouraging me regardless. I heard stories from other people not to use this hospital however I ignored them, and I am more than happy with the treatment and care from UHND.

    by Ms. P. J. H. - Posted on 07 October 2022

I had a gastroscopy at University Hospital North Durham as an out patient on 5th October 22 and had been quite stressed in anticipation of the procedure. However the staff were exceptional throughout, putting my mind at rest, carrying out the examination with utmost care and skill. They took time to explain the every aspect of the procedure, putting me at ease throughout the process, carefully explained the results and couldn’t have done more for me, making it a totally stress free experience. a big thank you to all staff.
