Review titled Excellent
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Kathleen Mrs Beere - Posted on 04 October 2024
My husband and I visited the Orthodontic Team in the Channel Day Surgery today with our son who has severe autism. We were very understandably apprehensive on how he would cope as he was having a general anastatic. However, I would like to thank the entire Team who went above and beyond to make it as stress-free as possible for us. They were brilliant. Please pass on our gratitude. Thank you.

Dear Ms Beere, I am so pleased to read that your Son received such great support from our brilliant staff. I can only imagine the stress and worry this scenario must have created for him and for you as his parents. I am pleased that the staff made this experience so positive. I really appreciate you passing on your kind feedback and will make sure to share your post with the department. Kind regards Josh Page (Patient Feedback Co-ordinator)

Review titled Actually quite scary
Rated 1 star out of 5

My 80 year year old mother in accident and emergency (acute assessment). Thank god I went over or she could still be there. Completely understaffed. No updates as to where she was in the queue bearing mind she couldn’t speak and was later diagnosed with a tumour. Ladies with teas and coffee completely charmless and I would suggest in the wrong job. Tea/coffee only offered to patients and nothing for the relatives many of whom looked less mobile and sicker than the patients. No food for anyone bear in mind some people were in wheelchairs with no help. . It was like a scene from a third world county. I called the next day for update on my mother, but nobody had time to speak to me. Promised a call back never got one. Mother discharged today at 2pm - been stuck at hospital for 5 hours waiting for her script. This is no reflection on the nursing staff, but a reflection on a broken National Health Service . It was actually scary. Suggest some of the chiefs get themselves down on the shop floor and come up with solutions (redundancies for the non performing management) and plough that money into the right places. Absolutely shocking

Thank you so much for your feedback. It sounds like your experience and your Mother's experience needs to be looked into further as this is not what we want any of our patients or relatives to have to deal with when attending our emergency services. Please could you contact my team which is the Patient Voice & Involvement Team via our email address which is ekhuft.patientvoice@nhs.net so we can talk through what happened and make sure that you, your mother and other patients and their relatives do not have to go through the same episodes again. I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards Josh Page (Patient Feedback Co-ordinator)

Review titled Appalling and disgraceful
Rated 1 star out of 5

Had to attend the Emergency Department at William Harvey Hospital, what an absolutely appalling experience. Eventually you get shunted round to Majors and wait 22 hours in the most uncomfortable chairs, doctor that shouted at you, nurses who I suppose could not help. I would avoid this hospital at all costs the ward was just as bad.

Review titled Smoking
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Lance Inskip - Posted on 13 September 2024
I am a smoker but I am appalled by the amount of people smoking and vaping near the front entrance and on the benches by the parking machine, I’ve just seen reviews from 2014 (ten years ago) complaining about smoking on site, and it looks as though nothing has been done about it, and staff and security do nothing to challenge people smoking on site, even though that is part of the policy. The reviews in 2014 also suggested smoking areas away from the buildings, but according to the hospital reply, this was shot down by health professional colleagues who preferred a no smoking policy - which is fine, but why have the policy and then do nothing about it? Like I said I am a smoker, but smoking on hospital grounds is unacceptable, and it appears nothing has been done about it (in ten years) so when are you going to grow a backbone and start telling people not to smoke out the front?

Dear Mr Inskip, Thank you for passing on your feedback. You are absolutely right regarding smoking in our Trust. This is something that actually is being extensively looked at right now . My line manager has been pushing for the Trust to install smoking shelters and I agree this should have happened a long time ago. No patients should have to walk through people smoking when they leave and enter our hospital grounds. If you would like to talk to my team further surrounding this please contact us via our email address which is ekhuft.patientvoice@nhs.net Kind regards Josh Page (Patient Feedback Coordinator)

Review titled A & E - Good; Majors Assessment Unit - not so much
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Tony Frost - Posted on 04 September 2024
I attended the A & E at 5pm on 1st September and was dealt with efficiently as they were not all that busy when I arrived. Eventually I was transferred to the Majors Assessment Unit at 8pm. This unit is obviously a recent addition as the signage to locate it is temporary and it was obviously recently converted from an observation ward. The unit was very much overworked and there were long wait times on uncomfortable chairs arranged around a large room obviously converted from a ward. I waited 17 hours to be assessed and eventually sent home, but had I been admitted there would have been a wait of 2 days 11 hours for a bed; all the time in these unsuitable chairs. There were people sleeping on the floor and on the chairs who were waiting for beds. In the area where the consultations took place there were a few beds but even a very elderly lady who was very distressed was denied use of them. If wait times in this area are going to be this long - hours and possibly days - then the seating needs to be improved, possibly a TV showing - for example - a news channel with no sound on, a vending machine or two, fully functioning toilets (1 out of 2 was out of order), and the windows in the waiting area changed from frosted glass to clear glass so the outside world can be seen. The staff were very good, kind, and understanding but very overworked. However the surroundings were claustrophobic, tatty, and looked temporary.

Review titled Wonderful care & superb staff
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Frances Brazier - Posted on 25 September 2024
I rushed my son to the A&E department just after 3am on Saturday morning. He was suffering from extreme stomach cramps & was crying out with pain. He was attended to immediately & taken to the major incident area where the care was continued. The nursing staff on duty were incredibly compassionate & attentive. He was then sent to the Surgical Emergency Assessment Unit & was again examined by consultants. He was luckily discharged around 3pm after a final examination by a consultant. I could not be happier with the care my son received & thank all the nurses and doctors who were on duty that weekend.

Review titled My experience was 100% positive
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by PollyVinall - Posted on 11 September 2024
I checked in through A & E and once going through the normal expected long waiting times to see the nurses, doctors and receiving results I was admitted. I can only say that my short stay at William Harvey hospital on the Kings Ward was exceptional. The staff from the doctors, nurses, carers, cleaners and the waiting staff that took our orders for food and served us, were amazing, so very caring, friendly and there was a feel of a personal touch. The women that I shared the ward with were so welcoming, supportive of each other while each one of them having gone through life changing operations and then having to adapt. So inspiring. Finally the air bed was the best, it made the stay so more comfortable. This is the NHS at its best.
