Review titled Padua ward
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Sam - Posted on 15 March 2025
I would like to thank the three healthcare assistants on Padua Ward this morning who we had an appointment with to take a blood sample for our 18 month old son. I really apologise but couldn't remember your names. They made what was going to be a potentially unpleasant process for our son as relaxed, comfortable and professional as possible. They managed to keep him entertained and comfortable throughout the whole process, along with making us as parents feel at ease as possible. Although it was unsuccessful (son had tricky veins to find), we are rebooked to come back in for another go in a couple of weeks. We are completely relaxed with coming back in due to how you were with our son and us. Thank you once again, you are a credit to the organisation.

Dear Sam, I can not tell you how grateful our team on Padua will be for the beautiful words you have passed on about your experience attending with your son. I appreciate how difficult it can be coming into hospital with your children, especially when they are so young. Myself and my wife had to do the same with both of our children and I completely empathise with the feelings you must have felt but it sounds like the way you were all treated is exactly the experience we want all our patients and families to receive. I hope your son is doing ok and that the team are able to be more successful next time you see them. Kind regards Josh Page (Patient Feedback Co-ordinator)

Review titled Thank you for everything
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by David Miller - Posted on 30 March 2025
The Nhs and The William Harvey hospital get knocked all of the time hence why I wanted to leave a review that is positive and recognise how lucky we are to have the Nhs My wife gave birth in Twh hospital and the care and attention she received while pregnant and during birth, including the post birth complications was exceptional. We felt reassured through out the process and all of the staff we encountered were incredibly supportive and attentive. It is true that Twh hospital is a little tired, old and in need of some talc but it’s the people that make the service and all the people we encountered were a credit to the hospital. Thank you one and all.

Review titled Returned after years
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Gary - Posted on 18 March 2025
My doctor referred me to go to hospital straight away [in work clothes ] Attended through new accident and emergency entrance ...where evaluated, and seen [wait of course] .Sent to Acute assessment area ....in which has chairs now instead of beds, as can fit more people in ,also the treatment area chairs .Hospital found ,underlying issue in me bloods ....So was now on a different track to one come in with ....needed antibiotics by drip ....unfortunately had to stay there for 2 days ,in chair sleeping, then onto makeshift ward in corridor -But this was expectable to me as was mid aged and know how hard all hospital staff work....coping with lack of finances and more admissions ---they are making the best of the situation forced upon them ..........Food ie meals nice -staff best ya can get -was treated good ........even got a shower [out of work clothes into clean] The hospital was being cleaned constantly...More security these days ..............As was in here 30+ years ago .... I fear it will get worse in years to come ,but for now the william harvey is holding its own through these unsettling times -Big thankyou

Review titled Great service

by Mrs D Taylor - Posted on 12 January 2025
My husband was brought in by ambulance after a fall down the stairs. Although we were in a corridor the help and care he received was very good. Nurses and doctors very professional and friendly considering how very very busy they were. We were very pleased. Thank you to all.

Review titled Terrible care from nursing staff
by Anonymous - Posted on 25 December 2024
My son was bought in by ambulance and we ended up being in the department for 5 hours before being seen by a medical Dr who ordered some tests. My son was having trouble sitting as he was in pain and needed to lay down but was told that this was not possible! There was empty spaces on the trolleys as being Christmas eve they were not busy. We were met with extremely rude nursing staff, one of which was more interested in her phone and eating her pizza than attending to my sons needs. At one point another nurse walked in to the cubicle when my son was rolling around in pain, offered him paracetamol but I told her he wasn't able to take it, she just walked out and nothing further was offered. I am a nurse myself and I would never dream of treating my patients in such an unprofessional and uncaring manner. My son ended up self discharging as they would just not listen to what he was telling them.

Review titled Excellent
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Kathleen Mrs Beere - Posted on 04 October 2024
My husband and I visited the Orthodontic Team in the Channel Day Surgery today with our son who has severe autism. We were very understandably apprehensive on how he would cope as he was having a general anastatic. However, I would like to thank the entire Team who went above and beyond to make it as stress-free as possible for us. They were brilliant. Please pass on our gratitude. Thank you.

Review titled Actually quite scary
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 19 October 2024
My 80 year year old mother in accident and emergency (acute assessment). Thank god I went over or she could still be there. Completely understaffed. No updates as to where she was in the queue bearing mind she couldn’t speak and was later diagnosed with a tumour. Ladies with teas and coffee completely charmless and I would suggest in the wrong job. Tea/coffee only offered to patients and nothing for the relatives many of whom looked less mobile and sicker than the patients. No food for anyone bear in mind some people were in wheelchairs with no help. . It was like a scene from a third world county. I called the next day for update on my mother, but nobody had time to speak to me. Promised a call back never got one. Mother discharged today at 2pm - been stuck at hospital for 5 hours waiting for her script. This is no reflection on the nursing staff, but a reflection on a broken National Health Service . It was actually scary. Suggest some of the chiefs get themselves down on the shop floor and come up with solutions (redundancies for the non performing management) and plough that money into the right places. Absolutely shocking

Thank you so much for your feedback. It sounds like your experience and your Mother's experience needs to be looked into further as this is not what we want any of our patients or relatives to have to deal with when attending our emergency services. Please could you contact my team which is the Patient Voice & Involvement Team via our email address which is ekhuft.patientvoice@nhs.net so we can talk through what happened and make sure that you, your mother and other patients and their relatives do not have to go through the same episodes again. I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards Josh Page (Patient Feedback Co-ordinator)

Review titled Appalling and disgraceful
Rated 1 star out of 5

Had to attend the Emergency Department at William Harvey Hospital, what an absolutely appalling experience. Eventually you get shunted round to Majors and wait 22 hours in the most uncomfortable chairs, doctor that shouted at you, nurses who I suppose could not help. I would avoid this hospital at all costs the ward was just as bad.

Review titled Smoking
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Lance Inskip - Posted on 13 September 2024
I am a smoker but I am appalled by the amount of people smoking and vaping near the front entrance and on the benches by the parking machine, I’ve just seen reviews from 2014 (ten years ago) complaining about smoking on site, and it looks as though nothing has been done about it, and staff and security do nothing to challenge people smoking on site, even though that is part of the policy. The reviews in 2014 also suggested smoking areas away from the buildings, but according to the hospital reply, this was shot down by health professional colleagues who preferred a no smoking policy - which is fine, but why have the policy and then do nothing about it? Like I said I am a smoker, but smoking on hospital grounds is unacceptable, and it appears nothing has been done about it (in ten years) so when are you going to grow a backbone and start telling people not to smoke out the front?

Dear Mr Inskip, Thank you for passing on your feedback. You are absolutely right regarding smoking in our Trust. This is something that actually is being extensively looked at right now . My line manager has been pushing for the Trust to install smoking shelters and I agree this should have happened a long time ago. No patients should have to walk through people smoking when they leave and enter our hospital grounds. If you would like to talk to my team further surrounding this please contact us via our email address which is ekhuft.patientvoice@nhs.net Kind regards Josh Page (Patient Feedback Coordinator)

Review titled A & E - Good; Majors Assessment Unit - not so much
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Tony Frost - Posted on 04 September 2024
I attended the A & E at 5pm on 1st September and was dealt with efficiently as they were not all that busy when I arrived. Eventually I was transferred to the Majors Assessment Unit at 8pm. This unit is obviously a recent addition as the signage to locate it is temporary and it was obviously recently converted from an observation ward. The unit was very much overworked and there were long wait times on uncomfortable chairs arranged around a large room obviously converted from a ward. I waited 17 hours to be assessed and eventually sent home, but had I been admitted there would have been a wait of 2 days 11 hours for a bed; all the time in these unsuitable chairs. There were people sleeping on the floor and on the chairs who were waiting for beds. In the area where the consultations took place there were a few beds but even a very elderly lady who was very distressed was denied use of them. If wait times in this area are going to be this long - hours and possibly days - then the seating needs to be improved, possibly a TV showing - for example - a news channel with no sound on, a vending machine or two, fully functioning toilets (1 out of 2 was out of order), and the windows in the waiting area changed from frosted glass to clear glass so the outside world can be seen. The staff were very good, kind, and understanding but very overworked. However the surroundings were claustrophobic, tatty, and looked temporary.
