  1. Review titled Excellent care.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I attended A&E with chest pain. I was really scared! The Nursing, Medical, ECG, Radiography Phlebotomy and all Staff/Departments involved in my care could not have been more kind and professional. I was reassured, investigated thoroughly and treated for the pain. Ongoing investigations arranged. I cannot thank everyone enough for their treatment and support. I cannot recommend everyone highly enough. Arrived 16:00 Discharged 20:00. The question regarding same sex wards was not relevant to my visit. Thank you all!!!

  2. Review titled Excellent Nursing and Doctors - Administrators not good

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 22 February 2023

Sadly I find it shocking that everytime I visit there are many smokers blatantly smoking in front of the non-smoking signs. Surely someone could stop this? I took a 91 year old with COPD into the hospital in a critical state and had to steer him through the smoke - it is totally unacceptable. However, the service in A&E was very good and very prompt. Unfortunately every time he was moved I told each station that I was the main contact, I gave my telephone number and name and every day I was told that this information was missing. When my friend became critical the Dr. did not have me on their notes as a contact so when I went to visit and was told he had COVID I was shocked. When I questioned this with the staff on the desk they didn't seem bothered at all and just shrugged their shoulders. A 91 year old with COVID is not something to shrug your shoulders about. I also think it's detrimental having a change of staff all the time - I haven't seen the same staff more than once in a week of him being here and having to explain everything every time is tiring. Also after staying all night the toilets were unclean and there was no sign of security in the foyer.

Thank you for sharing this feedback. We are looking at ways to discourage people smoking outside of the entrance to A&E and the main entrance. Like all NHS sites we are required to be smoke free, but unfortunately the signs do not stop a minority of people from doing this and we are not allowed to provide smoking shelters on NHS sites. I will share your feedback with the site manager. Your comments about giving your contact details to the staff, but these not being recorded are of concern. We normally contact the person's next of kin, or the person they have asked to be contacted. I'm sorry that this didn't happen. If you want us to look into this in more detail please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on tel: 01227 783145 or email: ekh-tr.pals@nhs.net. PALS are open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm, except bank holidays. If you phone and get the voicemail please leave a message and the team will get back to you. You can also make them aware of which ward you found the toilets not to be clean and which ward it was where the staff seemed unconcerned that your friend had Covid. There are security staff on site at all times, but they may have been called to deal with a situation. Please be assured if you'd asked a staff member for assistance they would have tried to help. Our staff work shifts and with the pressure on our Emergency Departments we have to move staff to where there is the greatest need. These factors make it a challenge and whilst we cannot always guarantee the same staff care for a patient throughout the length of their stay, every patient has a named nurse and they are happy to update a patient's relative or named contact.

  3. Review titled Fairly ok service

I rung 999 for my autistic partner for stomach pain. We didnt know what was causing it the paramedics were upmost with care and amazingly empathetic towards his autism. We spent 24 hours in a n e and told it was a 3 day wait for a bed. He discharged himself after being told this as they were just giving him paracetamol tablets after he was throwing up and they didnt seem to care about it. Wouldnt go back if i had the chance

  4. Review titled Excellent Care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

My 93year old sister was taken to the William Harvey Hospital A&E department after a nasty fall and banged her head. She was there for about ten hours but in that time received the utmost care and a doctor took the time to telephone me to let me know how my sister was and the results of her CT Scan. The NHS Doctors and Nurses deserve the highest praise the way my sister was looked after. I am very grateful.

  5. Review titled So bad.

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 07 March 2023

The waiting times are ridiculous in this hospital. They say it's because staff are busy but it's really not the case. They all look like they don't know what they are doing and just walking around chatting, laughing and drinking their coffee blissfully. Whilst you have kids crying and other patients in pain waiting to be seen. This hospital really needs a shake up and the staff who are working for the NHS need to live up to their title. An embarrassment to the NHS that's for sure. Whilst waiting everyone is saying the same thing that they have waited hours just to be asked a few details then back to the waiting room. It shouldn't be taking as long as it takes here. Plenty other hospitals get the job done so much better. Staff are not entitled to act like this, they should be doing their job properly.

I am sorry to hear you had this experience at William Harvey Hospital. We are experiencing high demand in both our Emergency Department and Urgent Treatment Centre. Patients are triaged to assess how urgently they need to be seen and this can result in long waits for those who are not seriously ill. We appreciate this is not ideal, but please be assured our staff are doing their best to make sure people are seen as soon as possible, depending on how unwell they are. If you would like us to look into what happened, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on tel: 01227 783145 or email: ekh-tr.pals@nhs.net. 6. Review titled Gluten free food.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by clive luckett - Posted on 09 February 2023

As a coeliac and diabetic I had trouble obtaining any food whilst waiting to be seen. The shop only had crisps and chocolate bars and the trolley which came around in the evening only had fruit cake. This then caused a problem as when I saw the doctor my blood sugars were very high. My visit took 7hrs. Please could you sort this as I cannot be the only one.

  7. Review titled Poor service

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 12 April 2023

On a recent stay in Ashford. I had to attend this hospital for an mri. That experience was ok. I was marked as urgent and still have not received any results from my mri in February. It is now April and I am frustrated and distressed as I have called the department and was told the results have been out for four weeks. Neither my doctor nor myself can access these results. I was treated rudely by the person I spoke too. Please can someone send my results to my doctor so we can find out if I need further treatment. Please.

  8. Review titled Emergency Eye Treatment

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Richard - Posted on 18 January 2023

I attended the Urgent Eye Clinic on 8th Jan. Was seen by the duty Ophthalmologist who despite his workload could not have been more thorough or helpful. After a detailed examination and discussion he arranged for me to see a specialist VitreoRetinal consultant. I received a phone call from an efficient and helpful administrator early the next day and was offered a choice of appointment times both within 10 days. I duly attended and was again treated with respect and professionalism. I would like to thank the department and the hospital for their care and dedication.

Rated 3 stars out of 5

10.45 just been for a foot x-ray. Encountered at least 10 people smoking or vapping blocking entrance to main building on leaving. I had to walk on the cobbles to avoid them as not wishing to walk through them. This did not help my painful foot.

  10. Review titled Fantastic NHS as usual

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Karen Day - Posted on 15 January 2023

I honestly can't thank the NHS for all their fantastic service during my 62 years, including during the pandemic. I've been there today for a tongue biopsy at 10.30 and was out by 11 and looked after by the most fantastic staff. Even this appointment was as a result to the NHS dentist who said I had a lump on my tongue in December 2022. I got an appointment before Christmas to check it out and a biopsy done by mid January. How on earth people keep saying they wait ages for an appointment is rubbish imo and how can anyone ask for more than I've just described. The NHS staff and service is not a problem but perhaps its senior management. Support the NHS, they save our lives and risked their own during the pandemic. Please praise them more often as they deserve it.
