Everyone at the Fairbrook surgery is very helpful every time I need help. Recently one of the secretaries went extra mile to help me with my queries. This shouldn’t go unnoticed. Thank you very much for great service. Keep up with the good work you are all doing.

  2. Review titled Appointments system

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 25 January 2023

I phoned to get an appointment for next week at 8.29 am as advised by the GP I saw regarding my high blood pressure. I was number 11 in the queue but by the time I got through at 8.32 all appointments had gone. The receptionist told me that they had been booked online through the app. I have the app so I attempted as advised to bring up appointments although I knew they had all been booked for today. However this isn’t possible on the app as the only appointments being offered online are for flu and Covid vaccinations. The advice was to phone the surgery. This means I am on some sort of merry go round where I am unable to get help with something as serious as high blood pressure. This situation is not helping my condition and makes me very vulnerable.

Dear Patient. I am so sorry that you were not able to get an appointment on the day you rang. As you are anonymous I can't contact you to help but hope the below explanation helps to go forward. Our on the day appointments open at 8.00am and at 2.00pm and at the moment we have the respiratory hub housed at Fairbrook and in Potters Bar that is giving us some extra capacity and we also have various other clinical appts that our Care Co ordinators can signpost you into. Our Prebookable phone or Face to Face appointments GP appointments that are booked one week in advance open at 10.30am. For these you can either ring at 10.30 or go online at 10.30am (best through the NHs app). If you go online at other times, you may only see other appointments. Like you mentioned you could see Flu and covid but often it will be Blood test or Smear Appointments at other times. If you are ever worried about your blood pressure we have the BP machine in our waiting room and our nurses can also double check your readings. We do advise patients to have a home blood pressure reading machine or pharmacies can help. It does sound like you know this information and it was a discussion with a clinician you needed. This could be our clinical pharmacist or practice nurse and doesn't always have to be a doctor. Please do contact myself the Practice Manager Michele Cain if I can help further. fairbrook.medicalcentre@nhs.net.

  3. Review titled Something needs to change

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 10 December 2022

The medical staff are phonemonal. However, similar to other commenters, the receptionists and trying to get an appointment are not positive experiences. It is impossible to get an appointment on the day . With an unwell child you are faced with no other option but to go to a walk in (yesterday the wait was 5 hours . The majority of people waiting clearly had been unable to get GP appointments . So increased demand for Gps is clearly a problem across the country). Your other option is to see a private GP, which yes we felt we had to do faced with an unwell child, the looming weekend and feeling in dispair with no where else adequate to go to in reality. I understand that there is a clear national shortage of GPs, that Fairbrook has employed other medical staff to help and that there is a lack of GP surgeries in Borehamwood proportionally to the ongoing increase in Borehamwoods population. But we are living in the 21st century. Being unble to see a Gp when poorly is really not good enough regardless of whatever the reasons behind these barriers are. There is no justification. Something needs to be done and quickly. Will we be faced with the only option to go privately?

Dear Patient Thank you very much for your feedback and I am sorry to hear that you were not able to get an appointment for your unwell child. We are faced at the moment with unprecedented demand due to respiratory illnesses, still Covid around and now the children's possible Scarlet Fever. It is a very worrying time in the NHS and even more so being a parent. Please can I remind you as you mentioned the weekend was looming in this particular case. We are open 8-6.30 and every evening and all over the weekend 111 take over. They do have some local hubs in Borehamwood and do arrange appointments for patients during these times as well as telephone access. I also hope to be able to advise our patients in the near future as our ICB Integrated Care Board is meeting today to help GP surgeries and patients and organise some paediatric appointments locally. We (and the media) has been feeding back about the new demand ontop of the already stretched appointment system. I am sorry that this time we were not able to help your child and you felt you had to go privately. Please do email myself on fairbrook.medicalcentre@nhs.net if I could help or advice further. We always need new patients to join our PPG Patient Participation Group meetings and you wrote so eloquently and fairly even after having the situation of a poorly child. I do hope they are better now. Many thanks again for your time and review. Michele Cain Practice Manager - Operations.

Dear patient I am sorry to hear that you have not been able to get an appointment when you rang at the correct time and that you feel we are badly organised. This is such a pity to hear especially as we are working hard to improve and achieve the highest standards of care and patient satisfaction. These last 2 weeks the demand has increased even higher with Respiratory illnesses, Covid and children's scarlet fever. I am also sorry you were promised a call from myself. I do apologise if I have missed this request. Please do contact me on fairbrook.medicalcentre@nhs.net and I can discuss this further with you. I don't have a magic wand and can't open up appointments but can listen and learn from examples and see what we can learn from our patients experiences. I look forward to hearing from you in person via the email so I can help you further. Michele Cain Practice Manager - operations

  6. Review titled Caring Practice

My personal experience of Fairbrook Medical Centre has always been really positive. The reception staff always friendly and I can have a giggle with them even when they are busy. They try their hardest to help with appointments if and when needed especially now as our family are going through very tough health issues. Nurses always willing to listen when needed. Thank you Fairbrook you are all stars.

Dear Sue Thank you so much for your positive feedback. I will pass this onto our reception/Care Coordinator front line staff. They are extremely busy, helping alot of patients each day, signposting them to the correct clinicians and helping with enquiries. You are right it is a very tough role which often gets alot of abuse, so to hear your glowing review will mean alot to them. Demand verses capacity is growing and growing. Last week we topped 620 calls into the surgery in a day (the norm used to be 300). If they could they would give an appointment to everyone but we just don't have the capacity for all the calls we have to put directly into a GP. They are fully trained in signposting patients into other clinicians such booking directly into the pharmacy, mental health workers, muscular skeletal specialist physios, social prescribers, advance nurse practitioners, clinical pharmacist, nurses, healthcare assistants, phlebotomists and our paramedic. As you can see the surgery has changed alot with all these new roles. I will also pass this onto our nurses- we are very lucky to have such an amazing nursing team. Thank you again for your time and feedback- it is much appreciated. Michele Cain Practice Manager - operations.

Dear Patient Thank you for posting this review. Wonderful to hear that a member of staff persisted over 8 times to make sure they could finish explaining and help with your request. I looked into this and can tell you it was Jaffer Rashid our amazing prescribing clinical pharmacist who kept ringing you back. He was so happy to receive this feedback and great to show the whole team how we can continue to help and continue to try with our patients. I do hope your phone is behaving better now. Thank you for your time in letting us know about your good experience. Michele Cain Practice Manager.

  8. Review titled Find a different practice

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 07 October 2022

A while back my husband and I tried to have fertility treatment we were fobbed off and ended up having to go private. £14000 later (for treatment I was young enough to get in the NHS) and I have a lovely baby boy. I tried a few times to register my child and get a six week appointment only to be told that they don’t pre book appointments and I had to try at 10:30 or 2pm to get appointments when they were released. This I tried on four separate occasions with no joy! I then called up for an appointment just for me as I had a c section and the scar developed a sore was told to take a picture and put it on some link which I did. I was called I missed the call because I was feeding my son I was called a minute after that which again because I was feeding my son I missed, they took me off the list and I was told I would have to call back and re book. I was worried about having a sore on the c section scar and would have liked to have it dealt with before it gets infected. I’m now thinking I will have to see if I can get a private GP appointment for this. They seem to not be thinking about the fact that new mothers are suffering with their mental health.

We are sorry to hear about your experiences with NHS fertility treatment and since the birth of your baby. Demand verses capacity is high but if you feel you have an infected scar and we are shut or full, please ring 111. Going privately does not have to be the only option. 111 will be able to triage you and either see you locally or deal with over the phone. We are sorry that you missed our call, especially as you were feeding. The clinicians protocol is to ring twice 30 minutes apart. As your complaint is anonymous we can't answer specifically but we would like to look into this further to check that we did all we could at the time. Please email the practice manager on fairbrook.medicalcentre@nhs.net so we can help further. We will be able to contact the health visitors for you and also give information to help with your mental health. I have put some information on here incase you don't contact the practice manager. Wellbeing team: confidential talking therapy and practical support www.talkwellbeing.co.uk 0300 777 0707 24/7. We can also arrange a phone appointment with a primary care mental health worker to talk thought your mental health. Please get in contact with us at Fairbrook. We want to help.

  9. Review titled Fantastic practice

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Sam - Posted on 09 October 2022

My experience with Fairbrook continues to be brilliant. The staff are always warm, helpful and conscientious. The reception team in particular are to be commended for their unwavering professionalism and kindness. The GPs and nurses are very knowledgeable and supportive; I have always felt listened to and been very satisfied with how my health concerns have been addressed. Their phlebotomist is also excellent and has a magic touch (blood draws never hurt or feel uncomfortable). My experience with Fairbrook’s pharmacist has also been great; they are outstanding, very helpful and deeply knowledgeable. To conclude, I think Fairbrook is an absolutely fantastic practice; I can’t say enough good things about them as I’ve had an excellent experience and felt very looked after, with my health needs met.

Wow, what a wonderful review to receive. We are so grateful for your time in writing this. It really helps the whole team when we received this. We know we don't always get it right and demand verses the capacity we are able to house and get means that not everyone can get to see us, in the time frame they would like. To hear that our new and expanded clinical pharmacy team is working and our receptionist are helpful and conscientious means alot. We are continuing to train and work together on empathy and signpost into the correct clinical areas. Thank you Sam again.
