  1. Review titled Disabled Parking

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 27 February 2023

My Mother is now an inpatient and I was able to register my vehicle to visit her at the weekend. I arrived at the hospital at approximately 1330 on 27 Feb 23, there were no disabled parking spaces and after driving around for 45 minutes there were no spaces available to park in. My Mother is 91 and I am her Carer. As I allowed an hour for my visit to give my Mother some essentials I had to leave so I put my car in the 20 minute zone and went in to register my car so I would not get a ticket. I was very surprised to be told I could not register my car for disabled parking and that I would have to pay even though my Mother was upstairs! So I had to pay £2 to not visit my Mother and give her her essentials. How can this be right?? If my Mother were not in the hospital I would have no reason to visit. The parking at the hospital is totally inadequate for its size. We live in Potters Bar where the 84 bus has been taken out of service to Potters Bar so going by car is my only option. I look forward to your response.

  2. Review titled Poor Patient Information and Conditions

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 21 February 2023

Very, very busy A&E department. Haphazard means of calling the next patient for treatment - sometimes a Public Address call asking a person to go to 'minors'; sometimes a person wearing a face mask in the far corner quietly calling a name; another time a locked corridor door opens and again a person with best endeavours to make themselves heard. There is no signage where to go to for the 'minors'. Hence folks wandering off in the wrong direction. The route to the elusive 'minors' department is through a locked corridor door with a sign on it saying "Accident & Emergency". By knocking on the locked door and waiting for someone randomly to come out one can then get into this corridor which happens to be the actual treatment area. You are sat in an area with four chairs which is part of a corridor to the children's area and a store cupboard with the doors removed. Each of the four patients is undergoing some form of treatment in close proximity to each other, each trying not to look at each other - no privacy. Further along this corridor which appears to be a fire exit route there are cupboards, tables and chairs restricting the width. At the end of the corridor is another area for Urgent Treatment which was not being used. Overall impression is of a very dedicated team of people working very hard and doing the very best they can in a relatively modern hospital with poor work environment.

Dear reviewer, thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your recent experience with our emergency department. We're sorry to read of the downfalls you have listed, including an ineffective process for calling the next patient, lack of signage, a poor waiting environment and a treatment area that doesn't provide privacy for patients being treated. We have passed your observations on to management who are reviewing changes to improve our emergency department (including communication and environment) and so we thank you for your comments. If you'd like to discuss this further, you could contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). PALS can be contacted by email at bcfpals@nhs.net or telephone on 0208 216 4924. In the meantime, we also note that the team were hard working and dedicated and we have passed this compliment along. Kind regards, the patient experience team.

  3. Review titled Neuro Response for people with MS is fantastic.

    by reticulumsc48 - Posted on 23 March 2023

I felt unwell and thought I might have a UTI. I dialled 111 and spoke to a lady who was aware of neuro response. She took my details down and said a clinician would ring me later on the same day. The clinician was very sympathetic and arranged for someone to collect my urine sample. She also sent a prescription for nitroflorintion to my chemist. The sample was collected on the same day. I was extremely happy that everything had happened so quickly. Neuro Response for people with MS is fantastic. I only learnt about it through the Barnet coffee morning (held once a month). Each monthly coffee morning has had something new and useful to learn about. I feel very lucky that I live in the borough of Barnet.

Dear reviewer, we're very glad to read that you experienced a good service from the Neuro Response for people with MS. Unfortunately we believe this is a community service and not one held specifically within Barnet hospital and so are unable to pass on the compliments. You may wish to contact Neuro Response directly. Apologies that we cannot help further. Best wishes, the patient experience team.

  4. Review titled Not good practice

I went to A&E with my daughter this evening for a very bad throat problem, as she cannot eat, difficulty swallowing just having sips of water, not eating I checked in to see the doctor and the nurse saw us first and said it’s 6 hours of waiting time as they have urgent issues dealing with. I am really annoyed with the care system in this country. I work very hard as a nurse I pay my taxes and when it’s time for my child to be seen by a doctor they’re telling me I have to go home and come back tomorrow. If anything happen to my daughter the nurse that saw her you will be liable for this I have your name

Dear Allison, thank you for leaving a review of your daughter's recent experience in our emergency department. We're very sorry to read of the six hour wait for your daughter to be seen, given her condition. The department does continue to see very high numbers of patients, treated in order of priority, but we recognise the impact this waiting time has on patients and their loved-ones. Given your concerns about being advised to go home and return the next day, we would recommend speaking to our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) who can discuss this with you further. PALS can be contacted by email at bcfpals@nhs.net or telephone on 0208 216 4924. Our apologies again for your poor experience. Sending you and your daughter our best wishes, the patient experience team.

  5. Review titled Outstanding A&E experience

I don't know where to start - this department is operated by saints! Despite an endless stream of patients, the staff are kind and patient and reassuringly professional. Sitting in A&E brings the news alive, and I am filled with admiration and gratitude for these overworked and underpaid amazing human beings.

Having never experienced such an 'invasive' procedure, I had anticipated it being painful despite being assured it would merely feel "uncomfortable". However, I hardly felt anything as the tube was inserted and removed. I was forewarned that I may have to be in the hospital for up to four hours, but was on my way home after 70 minutes. The Urology Clinic staff were excellent.

  7. Review titled Parking and Patient Care

Rated 4 stars out of 5

    by K Winchester - Posted on 03 March 2023

After receiving news that my elderly wife required a blood transfusion for her low blood pressure, following a serious fall, I drove from Potters Bar to find the car park full. Eventually, I had to give up and tried to find alternative parking nearby, After wasting 30 minutes driving around the local area, I drove back outside the end of zone sign and parked in a side turning, which had no roadside yellow lines. In my haste I had not seen the Residents Permit holders past this point sign, which was not visible to me, as I entered the road. Having protested the PCN with photographic timed evidence of my wife's blood transfusion, I was baffled to be told 'appropriate measures should have been carried out prior to you commencing the journey in order for the vehicle not to be parked in convention'. Please could somebody at Barnet Parking Services, who made this decision, tell me exactly what appropriate measures I should have taken since we all know that there is no longer a bus service from Potters Bar to the hospital. Had my wife died on that day, would that also not have made any difference to the cash strapped council? I would add that the front line staff at Barnet Hospital are superb but woefully let down by others beyond their control.

Dear reviewer, we're very sorry to read that you were unable to find parking at Barnet hospital. We do unfortunately have very limited parking on site and where possible, encourage patients to travel by public transport, as parking cannot be guaranteed. We are aware that parking locally is also very limited for both patients and staff and are in on-going conversations with the council to try and find a solution. Our parking manager has also suggested contacting Barnet council via https://www.barnet.gov.uk/parking and/or https://www.barnet.gov.uk/your-council/contact-council .If you'd like to discuss this more with us, please contact rf.bh-patientexperience@nhs.net - Our sincere apologies again for your poor parking experience and separately, we are glad to read that our colleagues at Barnet hospital have been superb. Kind regards, the patient experience team.

  8. Review titled indifference and without devotion

On 02.02.2023 had a head headache with partial losing vision. After calling 111 agreed to visit Barnet hospital, arrived at 11 am, after 5 hours they realized that the scan was not done yet and sent me to do the scan, after another 3 hours I asked doctors to check where is my doctor or who is my new doctor, they said that to wait and just ignored me few times, at 10:30 pm when I remained alone, they realized that needs to do something with me and checked that the scan report was ready a long time ago and my last doctor just disappeared and nobody tracked my case. 11 hours took to get a scan report, welcome in Barnet hospital!

  10. Review titled "Thank you " doesn't begin to cover it!

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Our precious daughter delivered our precious first grandson on Friday afternoon, and the care she got throughout was just outstanding! She had 2 dedicated midwives, amazing kind professionals who completely supported her through a traumatic labour that almost ended in a caesarean. The entire brilliant labour team worked together to avoid that and enable a forceps birth instead! Having read mixed reviews of the postnatal ward, I was beyond relieved to learn that she was blessed with an exemplary experience there too. Thank you all for taking such great care of two very special members of our family x
