Review titled Recent colonoscopy
by Pasha - Posted on 16 March 2023
I was in Chesterfield Royal Hospital for a routine colonoscopy examination and all the staff were so friendly and supportive. The doctor talked me through the procedure in detail and explained exactly what would happen. He also kept me updated throughout and answered my questions afterwards. This really helped me to keep as calm as possible. I have nothing but 100% praise for all the staff in the Endoscopy Unit! Thank you.

Review titled Nasal balloon to stem nosebleed
by MajorD - Posted on 23 February 2023
I was asked to pinch top of nose for 15 mins to stem bleeding. 23 mins later Dr came and bleeding hadn’t stopped. Dr proceeded to insert a nasal balloon, which hurt like hell for 3.5 hours. It wasn’t till the ENT person came to see if it needed to be cauterised and removed it that they told me it was hurting as it had not been inserted correctly.

Review titled All the staff were friendly, funny, kind and respectful.
by Mairi60 - Posted on 02 March 2023
I would like to express my sincere thanks to all staff while I was in hospital. I broke my hip and was cared for by staff on Robinson ward for a week. All the staff were friendly, funny, kind and respectful. The staff I need to include are nurses, doctors, cleaners, staff who bring food and staff who bring drinks. I would also like to include all the staff in theatre while I was there for a few hours. Especially the orthopaedic surgeon who screwed my hip back together. It was an emotional rollercoaster of a time for me. I don't think I would have got through it all without the kindness and patience of all the staff mentioned above. I would like you to know that I have never been in hospital before and have never had an operation. My appreciation cannot be expressed enough.

Review titled Fantastic help
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Elaine Hall - Posted on 23 February 2023
I was rushed into A&E on Saturday February 11th 2023 The doctor who saw me after my results came back from the lab was absolutely fantastic, he examined me and confirmed I had gallbladder problems, he got me in next day for an ultrasound, the day after a MRI scan and within 5 days for an emergency operation to remove the gallbladder. both my husband and I would not only like to thank him but to tell him he deserves a medal! we would also like to thank the rest of the staff on A&E that night and all the other staff including the nurses, doctors who looked after me, they were all tremendous. Thank you all once again. What a brilliant hospital we have.

Review titled Professional, Dignity, Sympathetic and Honest
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Andrew Wood - Posted on 21 February 2023
My father was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Royal Hospital on 20/02/23. The very first person we met in Accident & Emergency who greeted us and who ushered us through to a private area was very pleasant and understanding. We then went to the Intensive Care Unit which is daunting in itself with numerous machines making noises. All members of staff from the receptionist, healthcare assistant, nurses, matron, anaesthetists and consultant all treated us with respect and explained things to us in way that my mother and I could understand. At no time did we feel that we were a burden or hinderance nothing was too much trouble for them. The nurse who was allocated to my dad was very helpful and came as a comfort that he was in safe hands. Sadly, there isn’t a happy ending and following an honest conversation with the Consultant this morning we knew what he was telling us was the right decision, at no time were we pressured into making a decision one way or another, we took the lead. At all times my father was treated with dignity, the staff were professional in how they acted in the Intensive Care Unit and how they treated us, they were sympathetic to what we said and they were honest with us - we couldn’t have asked for better care for my dad On behalf of the family please pass on my thanks to all of the team in the Intensive Care Unit who helped my father on the 20th and 21st February. They are a credit to themselves, the Royal Hospital and the National Health Service

Review titled Not treated with dignity and respect
by violethx44 - Posted on 24 February 2023
There was some lovely staff on shift and I understand the lack of staff and the unprecedented level of need, so on a whole most of the care I can understand. I spent 10 hours before being discharged to a ward, no paracetamol given despite my severe headache and spiking of temperature. I was confirmed with Viral Meningitis after a lumbar puncture the following day. So I was feeling very unwell. We never once saw a doctor though to make a plan of care or know what they thought. I was taken for a CT scan some time in and had no idea it was planned or the result after. The bit that has impacted me most was the brief interaction with a doctor after the nursing staff being unable to take my blood. I do have difficult veins and the level of dehydration didn’t help. In the past 10+ years ago I suffered badly with my mental health and spent a lot of time in hospital. I sadly believe this has some impact or else I am unsure of the reasoning behind the doctor's manner. My husband was extremely taken aback also. The doctor walked in with a brief introduction of their name, asked me what my medical history was, I told them I have bipolar and have taken lithium for 15 years. The doctor then walked over to me and getting hold of my arm just said they cannot find a vein. Then straight away looked at me and asked if I am an IV user. I looked at the doctor in disbelief, to which they said they need to know. I was very unwell and tried to keep my self together. I felt vulnerable and upset and quite degraded. I explained briefly I had been in ITU after aspiration pneumonia many years ago and my veins had not ever recovered. The doctor then continued, with not a word of what they were doing, to wrap a tight glove round my arms and complete what I saw after as an arterial blood sample. Not explaining or saying a thing. They then turned to my husband and told him to put on a glove and hold that with pressure for ten minutes. They then abruptly left the room with no other words. I have spent ten years since recovery working in mental health services, and how the doctor treated me in my opinion goes against all values of treating people with dignity and respect and being involved in their care. I felt embarrassed and ashamed, and why should I? I do not believe there is any need to not even show the basics of care and discussion, and to jump from difficult venapuncture to instantly asking someone if they are a user? I have had difficult veins for many years and that hasn’t been asked of me and in the manner it was. I was then left in the room for several more hours with no update or information, to be moved to a ward and a lumbar puncture later that day. I was given the results of the CT scan and taken good care of by the doctors on the ward.

Review titled Our NHS staff never cease to amaze me
by casingth56 - Posted on 24 February 2023
I was nervous, having never had such a procedure, and was not relishing the thought of having a camera shoved down my throat. However I didn’t want the extra trauma of being anaesthetised, so chose the throat numbing spray. The procedure was very unpleasant, but I have to say the nurses and consultants were amazing. So professional but at the same time reassuring and helping me through it. Our NHS staff never cease to amaze me.

Review titled I would give all the staff I met today five *****
by MegOfLochaline - Posted on 16 February 2023
It was found after having a bowel screening test that I had blood in my faeces so I had to go to the MacMillan Centre at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. As you can imagine this was a very worrying time, my appointment for a colonoscopy was for the next week so not long to wait. I went for my colonoscopy today and right from walking in to the department the staff made you feel relaxed and were so friendly and this continued right through the procedure to the cup of coffee and biscuit before leaving. Everything was explained so there was no worrying about what was happening to you. I think in a situation where you are worried about what will happen and the possible outcome of these tests, it is important to have a friendly face to help relax you. I would give all the staff I met today in this department five *****, and a big thank you. Keep up the good work.

Review titled Good leadership and teamwork
by wurse23 - Posted on 24 February 2023
I attended the Endoscopy Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital on 22 February 2023 for an outpatient procedure. The service was welcoming, very efficient, caring, and informative. At a time when the NHS is experiencing severe pressures, this department is an exemplar of what can be achieved with good leadership, teamwork, and high staff morale.
