  1. Review titled Absolutely first class experience - I was so impressed

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Adam - Posted on 15 March 2024

I reported an ongoing issue with my foot which required minor surgery. I was so impressed with my experience with the hospital and with every healthcare professional that I dealt with. Communication was clear and timely, there was no waiting around when I reported for appointments, everyone I engaged with was kind and professional. All departments, from the consultant doctor, nurses, pre-op assessment, surgery ward staff - just brilliant. I couldn't have asked for more, felt compelled to leave this review as there's obviously lots of press about NHS performance and patient experience. Full marks! I have now regrettably moved away from Chesterfield, I only wish I could still report there for treatment!

  2. Review titled Amazing Staff and Care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Care of James Chatfield - Posted on 09 December 2023

We went in with my elderly father who had back pain and thought he had pulled his back but when examined he also felt pain in his leg, after X-rays, Heart Scan and bloods they discovered it maybe a clot. The care he received right through was absolutely amazing, from the reception, the doctors and nurses and even the lovely tea lady, they made this worrying time go by without fault. They brought my dad food and pain relief even a phone charger for me as my phone was nearly flat. The staff are an absolute credit to their roles and we would be lost without them all. I can’t remember names as there were so many but thank you your all amazing and are worth your weight in gold, how blessed we are to have an amazing NHS and all the wonderful teams who work there. Thank you, keep up the amazing work you do and know you are appreciated so very much xx

  4. Review titled Lack of beds within the hospital

    by Spencer1 - Posted on 04 January 2024

I booked into A&E at approximately 16:30 with central chest pain. I was triaged quite quickly and then seen by a doctor within 3 hours. The doctor's decision was that I needed to be admitted to EMU for my safety. However, there were no beds available so I spent over 16 hours sat on an uncomfortable plastic chair in A&E. At 9 am the following morning, given there was still no bed available I was moved to SDEC for further tests and assessments. The service at SDEC was excellent, from the cleanliness of the ward to the friendliness and efficiently of the staff. I had various tests and was finally discharged at approximately 16:00, with the expectation of a follow up outpatient appointment being organised. The staff in A&E were doing the best they could but had nowhere to put all the patients, like myself, who required a bed. In my view, the experience of sitting for such a prolonged period of time in an uncomfortable, unpadded chair with no opportunity to rest and with limited access to food and drink was akin to a form of torture. I was by no means alone in this experience. As a fellow employee of the NHS, I have every respect for the staff and much sympathy and compassion for the fact that I believe we are hampered in providing adequate care in a chronically underfunded service.

Hello Spencer1, I am sorry you were waiting a long time in our Emergency Department. I will ensure that my colleagues are asked to ensure patients waiting lengthy times in the waiting area are checked for comfort and offered blankets/pillows as well as refreshments. It has been incredibly busy in the ED and wider hospital and I thank you for your feedback and acknowledgement of good care, overall and that your experience in SDEC was was excellent. Thank you, Rachel Traveller Service Manager, Acute Care

  5. Review titled My colonoscopy journey

by Stuart polyp popper - Posted on 07 December 2023

Had the 5th and hopefully last colonoscopy recently and as usual the staff are a credit to the medical service - chatty, friendly and informative from arrival to leaving. I was in and out in less than two hours. My only gripe is the cost of the parking. After standing in the queue for 15+ minutes, 2 hours and 5 minutes cost £5.50. Talk about taking advantage of the unfortunate! But that’s the hospital trust I think that awards the licence to companies like this one. Not the hospital. I received my 1st letter offering a routine colonoscopy 8 years ago and would normally have ignored it. But I went and I was so glad I did as long story short I had 22 - yes, 22 - polyps removed on the second colonoscopy, some of which were cancerous and removed with no fuss or pain whatsoever. I am now clear and don’t have to go back for any more colonoscopies. Thanks to the staff and surgeons. It is not a pleasant procedure but if like me, it can save your life and lengthen it, it’s a no-brainer. The hospital staff really are good at making you feel welcome, comfortable and informed about all that’s going on and are great for a chat too. From receptionist to surgeon and everyone in between. I thank them all for helping the quality of my life. They are Amazing!!!!!

  6. Review titled Staff dedication

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Lorraine Turner - Posted on 08 November 2023

I visited the royal hospital yesterday to visit my sister on the emergency management unit. I was amazed by the numerous staffs that approached us to ask totally unprompted if they could assist us in locating where we needed to go. I am a retired health professional therefore have experience of numerous hospitals. The majority of the staff were in dark green (domestic staffs but also porters). I have never witnessed the like before where staff are so so supportive to visitors. Their managers should be so proud and ensure they are properly commended. They are after all the front line of your service. Truly amazing. Nursing staffs on the emergency management unit were also very welcoming when we visited.

  7. Review titled Frustration of after care

by Dazowls - Posted on 17 November 2023

I was originally booked in for my operation for rezum treatment, unfortunately the evening before I was informed it was cancelled, which obviously I found frustrating I then get informed week after it’s booked for the the following week which was a relief as I wanted it done ASAP. After the operation I was told I would have catheter fit and I would have it for a week. The week before my operation I had purchased away tickets to watch the football there and I was assuming I would be having my catheter removed on that week, so I had already had to miss a game due to my operation being rearranged. I’m a season ticket holder I might add, we won but my dad became unwell with an illness at the game and I wasn’t with him, due to having to cancel going. I was advised by the staff on Hollywell ward that if I hadn’t heard from the hospital three days prior to the scheduled surgery about my aftercare and removal of my catheter, that I was to phone that day - which I did do so and was told on the phone a nurse would get back to me. I appreciate they are busy but they never got back until the early hours of the next morning. I had my registration plates stolen from my car, so was busy all day attempting to get hold of replacements and reporting to the police and still never had a call back. I then phoned up the following morning and was informed I wasn’t having my catheter removed until a later date, meaning I have had to cancel my trip to the football for both me and my nephew as I don’t fancy travelling and driving for over 3 hours with a catheter bag on due to-it overfilling and spilling in my vehicle or not being able to get to a toilet and empty it at the game, meaning I’m well out of pocket again from the purchase of tickets. I was told I could try and get a district nurse to remove the catheter but my doctors at my surgery say they would need a referral from the hospital to do so, hence my frustration and upset from non removal.

  8. Review titled Devonshire Ward excellent

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Marie Schofield - Posted on 22 November 2023

I was taken via ambulance to the A&E dept in the early hours of the 13/11. Ambulance crew were amazing. I did feel that the wait to see a doctor in A&E was far too long and without any pain relief (in extreme pain). I was eventually taken to SAU where the nurses/HCAs were great. I eventually transferred to Devonshire ward where i remained for 9 days. The entire time i was there the staff on that ward were amazing. I cannot praise the ward staff enough for the kindness, help, care and concern. Despite being constantly busy and non stop in their job roles nothing was too much trouble for them and they always made time to talk/listen and support me when i needed them.

  9. Review titled Thank you a million times over

    by irregularitygy47 - Posted on 08 December 2023

I’ve had joint problems my entire life due to a disability. Since I was a teenager I’ve tried to get help for the chronic pain associated with my condition - I’ve seen GPs who googled my condition in front of me and said I just wanted more medication and physios who said there was nothing wrong and that I needed to stop being dramatic. After my pain got drastically worse, I visited the fracture clinic at CRH. Considering my past medical experiences, I wasn’t expecting much, but I wish I’d have visited CRH all those years ago. Everything I said was not only listened to but understood, all tests were done within an hour (no “come back for an X-Ray”) and we got to the bottom of everything in that one appointment. Even the reception staff were wonderful - having informed them that my allocated appointment was too far in advance and that I couldn’t cope, they called me as soon as there was an earlier cancellation, which luckily for me was an appointment in half an hour’s time! I had a really wonderful experience at CRH and I hope that all staff get the recognition they deserve. It honestly felt in the same ballpark of private hospital appointments I’ve had, which says a hell of a lot about the standard CRH set for their care - thank you a million times over.

  10. Review titled Shocking

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Nichola Spurr - Posted on 07 November 2023

Was sat with a family member in A&E for 10 hours before being seen by the doctors, wasn't offered any pain relief until he had been there 5 hours. Receptionist was so rude and disrespectful when asked how long it would be until we was seen.
