Review titled Chestnut unit
Rated 1 star out of 5

Had a scan done here and was absolutely shocked at the running of waiting room 2. HCAs that work there are serious unprofessional, I have never come across this before and I have had a lot of appointments across the board. Seemed like they were on a jolly, all sat around chatting loudly belching and swearing. I just sat there in total shock, I could have been in a pub on a Saturday night! The admission staff at the door were great along with the lady's who did my scan but serious let down by their HCAs.

I am very sorry for the experience you have had. We pride ourselves with being professional and outstanding in our delivery of care in the Chestnut Unit. I am shocked and saddened by your comment and want to reassure you that we are taking it seriously. All of the staff will be spoken to and will be reminded about their conduct when working to represent the Chestnut Unit and UHP as a whole. This is not acceptable and measures will be taken to ensure nobody has to have the same experience. Please accept my sincere apologies, thank you for taking the time to email and bring this to my attention. Tracey Whittingham Unit Manager Chestnut Urology Investigation Unit

Review titled compassionate staff
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Matt - Posted on 15 May 2024
I had to accompany my partner to the a&e department so she could be treated for ongoing chest pain, breathing difficulties and a persistent 5-week cough that our gp surgery has been unable to effectively address. The a&e staff, from blood pressure, blood-taking and ecg, through to nurses and the doctor who consulted with my partner, were examplary. They were kind, helpful and calm. The doctor in particular, listened to my partner, understood her concerns, spoke to her as an equal, didn't challenge or dismiss her about specifics of her condition (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome). After assessing the blood and ecg results, he ordered a chest x-ray, in order to further investigate the situation, and while waiting for the results, was able to access some information about the common occurance of respiratory symptoms in ehlers-danlos patients - symptoms which match exactly the symptoms my partner is suffering. This allowed him to confirm that the respiratory issues she's having may in fact be due to the ehlers-danlos, and he was open to this as a possibility. He is one of very few clinicians who has been willing to discuss the broader issues around ehlers-danlos with my partner. Many at our gp surgery and other specialists/consultants have been at best neutral, at worst dismissive or ignorant of the overall ehlers-danlos picture. I'd like to commend the doctor on his care, compassion, willingness to listen during this visit. In spite of the lateness (we were in the surgery from 18:30 until 01:15), and the busy conditions in the waiting room, the staff remained friendly and attentive.

Review titled Frustrating

Supposed to attend my appointment at colorectal Surgery outpatient department at 10:50 and I received a call at 10:00 o'clock that the clinician is filling unwell. They told me the same thing on the previous appointment that cancelled as well. I try to get my appointment for a few months now unsuccessful and on the letter that I received says it will cost £100 to the NHS if missed the appointment. What about me that I travel back home and needed to apply for unpaid authorised absence from my employer for this day? This is more than a frustrating situation.

I received exceptional care from the lovely nurses on the Lancaster Suite again. Together they tried their best to put me at ease during an uncomfortable colposcopy and procedure. I can’t praise their professionalism and care enough. I was given a thorough explanation throughout and treated with utmost respect. Thank you.

Review titled Fantastic treatment
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Lynne King - Posted on 03 June 2024
I was taken by amublance on 17/5/24 to Derriford after a fall in bathroom, knocked myself out and slight concussion. The treatment and attitude of staff was amazing. I was shown so much respect even though the department (E/D) was full. The Dr. was wonderful, kind and attentive. Considering the overwhelming pressure everyone was under, my care could not be doubted and my heartfelt thank you to everyone who cared for me, during a rather frightening time. One suggestion I have if I may, give the Drs. what they work hard for. Let the Government put the money where it should go, saving lives is important and Drs. are at the very front of every situation that they are confronted by. Well done E/D, you have my gratitude, respect and always in my prayers.

Went in to have my machine repaired only to be told straight away my machine was fine And I had the wrong size mask! Rather matter of factly ( which I need and prefer)! Readjusted the headgear to the correct size mask and now I have slept with no leakage ( and a green smiley face to greet me in the morning) for every night since being proffecionaly put in my place! I feel amazing compared to my defining sleep nights now! Thank you thank you thank you!

Review titled The worst wait of all places I've lived in UK
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 07 April 2024
It doesn't matter in how much agonising pain you are, they will leave you waiting. You only see nurses and care assistants running around and barely any doctors. I cam yesterday with excruciating pain and the doctor told me to keep paracetamol and ibuprofen even though I told him I wasn't coping with the pain, and needed more as paracetamol and ibuprofen were not giving me any relief. Dr said that the antibiotics would be enough, but it wasn't. After another night with no sleep and pure pain, I came back today. Arrived here at 6.30 am. In tears due to the pain. It is now 10 am and I have not seem the Dr yet. Ppl who were here before I arrived, have not seen the Drs. This is absolutely inhumane and disgraceful for a first world country. I've lived at different towns and cities in the UK, and never experienced this level of complete disregard to patient care. How do they make ppl wait in pain for hours and hours is beyond believe. You can see that no one cares, not even in thr slightest. Plymouth has been very disappointing in the health care department, very very bad!

Thank you for your website comment in which you outlined concerns regarding the care and treatment you received at the Emergency Department, Derriford Hospital. I am always disappointed to read negative comments as it means we may have let a patient down in some way. I can only apologise for the length of time you waited in the Emergency Department before being seen by a clinical member of staff. You may have seen in the national and local media that we are experiencing unprecedented demand in both the community and our hospitals. The area of the Emergency Department that you were waiting in is particularly overwhelmed by the volume of patients attending. I can assure you that our staff are hardworking and take patient care seriously, we as a team are constantly advocating the best for our patients but we are limited of what we can do with a system under unrelenting pressure. I apologise that our care fell short of the standard we accept in this case. I am truly sorry you have had a negative experience and have had cause to complain. Please do not hesitate to contact me in writing or by email at plh-tr.Complaints-PatientServices@nhs.net Thank you Jayde Fletcher Emergency Services Manager

Husband was admitted from Cornwall and he was so well looked after on the Erme ward. Team were very accommodating and the lady doctor will leave a lasting impression of empathy and care not just with the patient but with the family, every time she did her rounds she greeted me by my first name , how she remembers with all the patients she sees every day was wonderful and always included me in the conversation when discussing my husband care . Wonderful team working under such difficult times . Thankyou

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful words, all of the staff work really hard to be caring and compassionate with patients, relatives, carers and staff alike whilst working in a really busy ward environment. We are so pleased that you were looked after, that you and your husband were involved in the conversations about his care and management. Your message will be passed on the teams on Erme. We completely agree they are a wonderful team and it is a privilege to work with them. Wishing your husband a continuing speedy recovery. Review titled Chaos
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Penny Bailey - Posted on 19 April 2024
My husband was admitted to Derriford with severe chest pains. He was informed that a ct scan was needed for his treatment to progress. 8 days later he was still waiting! The whole hospital is in crisis, chaotic and a shambles. The staff are doing their best but it's not enough. Having been told on the morning of the 8th day, and prepped for a CT scan, nothing happened. The Ward Sister tried phoning the department coordinator, only to find she had left work at 4pm. Leaving many patients in the lurch. If you have a Choice as to which hospital you, or your friends/family are admitted to, don't choose Derrford

In under 2 hours I received an X-ray of my hips, a consultation with a Fellow with a future plan of action and an injection under ultrasound. I was very impressed with the professionalism, skill and caring attitude of all the staff concerned and would like to especially mention the radiologist and the nurse. Thank you to you all.
