The hospital have been nothing but incredible to me. I’m a very, very nervous patient and all of the staff were so kind and supportive throughout my procedure and enquiries. Thank you so much to all the staff for making my experience much less painful!

Review titled Hospital environment experience
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Malcolm M - Posted on 27 August 2023
mickleham ward room 19. ensuite - what it should be, but dated. no toilet seat, no washbasin plug, no hot water came through. no cleaning took place over 48hrs. water stains on ceiling. towel rail not secure - fell off! view from window - grubby 1960s architecture, torn netting, copulating pigeons. view of sky only -through the netting! external light pollution at night, blinds not really effective but room otherwise dark enough and quiet. nursing staff very good. great fun and interaction with one or two in particular. (two nights spent) hailsham ward - shared facilities, potentially with four other male patients. had to ask where toilets were! no male shower facilities had to share with female - bad. no washing facilities in the toilet, very small basin only suitable for hand washing - no plug again! extreme internal light pollution at night - no sleep at all! patient noise as well and, externally, even when dark, noisy seagulls! where were the staff at 2.45am when I went to the loo? nobody visible anywhere. nursing staff very good again except when I first arrived when I should have been shown where the facilities were. environment otherwise "newer". (one night stay - I declined the offer of a second.) food choices good and quality ok. best meal - ham salad with (not very good) chips plus hot lemon sponge and custard - very generous. battered fish goujons the previous night - the batter was "wet" and not crispy, possibly as a result of the "steam cooking" suggested on the menu card. do not steam heat batter!!! the commercially provided "entertainment" system - I used the "free" section. only 5 radio stations - where were r4 ex and classic fm? pathetic! The free tv from 6am till noon - odd that the picture faded into darkness (in both locations) when the operator's ads remained clear and colourful. I would not be paying for that if I were on a longer stay! question - why is michleham ward described as on level three and hailsham on level one when they are both on the same floor?

Dear Malcolm, Thank you for your feedback. It is a concern to us that your stay was less than satisfactory. We are undergoing some extensive refurbishment works at present both internally and externally which does impact on the environment. We note your concerns with regards to the netting and external courtyards which is scheduled to be repaired by our contractors. You have shared some concerns with regards to the facilities services and items requiring repair within the areas where you stayed. These will be reviewed and noted via our Estates and Facilities Helpdesk for attention as appropriate if not already reported. We will also be reviewing our cleaning records. We apologise for the inadequate showering facilities on Hailsham Ward; this area was being used at the time of your attendance as an overflow ward due the increased level of patient activity within Michelham Ward. Moving forward Michelham Ward is being relocated to a larger area. It is anticipated that this move will take place within the next two months once the refurbishment of the new ward area for Michelham Ward has been completed. We note your positive comments with regards to food choices and quality and will forward your suggestions with regards to some of the food items on the menu to our Catering Team. Similarly we will share your concerns with regards to the entertainment system with the appropriate management team. It would be useful to understand where you noted the differentials in signage as you correctly state both are on level 3. We did previously make reference to the levels at Eastbourne District General Hospital being lower ground floor, ground floor and level one and may have missed this in our signage somewhere which will need immediate replacement. However, we apologise for any confusion that may have arisen as there is also a level one area within Hailsham Ward, which is not in reference to the location within the hospital. Finally, thank you for your kind comments regard the nursing staff on both ward areas.

Stayed in CCU for 11 days. What a lovely bunch of people. Obviously I would never describe my stay as “enjoyable”, however all of the staff made me feel as comfortable as possible and more importantly, gave me confidence in the process.

Laporascopic surgery, I got to meet the anaesthetic and surgical teams beforehand, they explained everything and took my questions (even the silly ones) seriously. Care staff were compassionate, competent and reassuring and took me and my pain seriously. Made a painful and scary experience as calm and comfortable as possible, made me feel like a person not just a job obligation, 100/10. I would like to thank everyone involved.

Review titled 9 hour wait, 13 hour wait for treatment.
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 29 August 2023
Shocked by the lack of staff and the length of wait at A and E. We had to go out and buy painkillers as there was no one to ask for pain relief for my Mum who had had a fall. She was eventually given treatment after being in there for 13 hours. Appalling. The ladies toilets were both out of order. It felt like a third world hospital. Seriously disturbing.

We are sorry to learn that your mother had such an extended wait when she attended the Emergency Department at Eastbourne District General Hospital following a fall and that she was not given any pain relief, as this is not the level of care and treatment we aspire to provide. Amazing A&E staff dealt with my broken and displaced wrist speedily, efficiently and with great humour. In and out within 2 hours on a busy Saturday afternoon. Faultless care and attention from A - nurse and O - doctor. Good old NHS!

Radiotherapy for spinal tumour, which had suddenly rendered me immobile. My problem was rapidly diagnosed with MRI in Hastings then two days later having been diagnosed began radiotherapy treatment at Eastbourne DGH. Each day of a five day program of radio therapy, I was collected from home, delivered into the dept. Treated and then returned home. What an outstanding service. All the highly trained people working so hard to give me a few more months with my nearest and dearest. Thank you so much! You are outstanding!
