Review titled Very good treatment
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Anthony Rust - Posted on 05 July 2024
My wife was treated for chest pain on an evening when A&E was very busy. Triage was quick and although we were in the Department many hours, we accepted treatment was based on medical need and not the time of arrival. A return to the Ambulatory Unit was required the next day for a CT Scan. Throughout the experience, all Staff were very courteous, compassionate and professional. The Staff Nurse and Doctor explained in layman's language the reasons for particular procedures and the consequences of their results, both good and bad. Though my wife still experiences some pain, her anxieties were lessened by the Doctor explaining their were no major clinical problems and explained the probable cause was muscular trauma resulting from a recent fall. The Doctor also stressed we were to return to the Unit if there was no improvement. We are very thankful for the care given by the Ambulatory Unit in particular and request they are made aware of this.

Review titled Inefficient and disinterested
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 06 June 2024
I was initially referred as a matter of urgency to Ophthalmology, whose care and focus I absolutely cannot fault - I was having systemic visual issues which are considered, by every source, a medical emergency. Unfortunately, the consultant in Ophthalmology not unreasonably wanted to try and establish why these issues were occurring, since all of their tests for usual causes were normal. This resulted in a referral to the 'ambulatory' "wait here and basically be forgotten for several hours" department. 6hrs later, following a single scan, I had a 5min 'consultation' with a doctor, which was basically "the scan doesn't show anything beyond what Ophthalmology already told us. They want you to have a lumbar puncture, but we don't do that here", and then a soliloquy about how lumbar punctures "aren't a simple procedure" (I wasn't under the impression they were...) Essentially, I'm just going to be left to lose what's left of my sight, because the 'why' of what's happening isn't known. I've already lost two jobs because of the impact of sight loss, and following this appointment, I don't intend to bother following up on any further "urgent referrals", or suggestion that any symptoms are "a medical emergency" - since, as soon as you leave the relevant specialist department, this hospital doesn't consider anything 'urgent'. On a practical note - there needs to be a more affordable option for non-admitted patients to get food than the m&s concession, and if people are going to be expected to wait for hours at a time, then more comfortable seating needs to be provided - if it's "unhealthy" for people to sit for several hours in an office job, why is it suddenly okay when you're waiting in a hospital?

Review titled A big thank you 🙏

by Kiran Brice - Posted on 10 August 2024
I recently had the pleasure of being operated on by the consultant ankle surgeon for an ankle injury, and I cannot express enough how grateful I am for the exceptional care I received not only from himself but also the hospital nurses that look after me during my stay. From the initial consultation to the follow-up appointments, he demonstrated not only impressive expertise but also genuine compassion for my situation.

Review titled most unorganised hospital ever!!!
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 16 May 2024
took my partner to A&E due to pain in her abdomen, a quick scan showed gallstones, spoke to 1 doctor who prescribed some antibiotics and paracetamol, 2nd doctor came in and suggested some antibiotics which we explained this has already been given, 3rd doctor arrived and suggested some antibiotics again explained this has been done, partner was sent home in the morning with suggestions that this may need to be operated on and that she would be called in a few days, Partner got a call on the tuesday and was asked if she had everything prepared for her surgery on Friday even though she had not been told about a surgery date... after explaining this it was set up for my partner to come to the hospital on Thursday to speak to the surgeon at 10:20.. partner got to the hospital at 10:00 and waited until 11:15 to be told that they had no idea why she was there nor do they know what surgeon she would need to speak to.. after partner told them who she spoke to on the phone they went off to speak to them and then came back to my partner to say they would still need to speak to the surgeon however the surgeon was not available that day. this isnt the first time visiting this hospital where is it abundantly clear that communication between staff and department is null and void... its an absolute shambles! and to be honest neither me nor my partner are happy with anyone in James Paget performing an operation let a lone opening a can of beans.. the last year we have visited this hospital due to pregnancy and each time we are stunned by how unorganised the departments are..

Review titled Uninformed & Dismissive Consultant

Referral letter from this department to Endocrine Dept to do ultrasound on large nodule found on thyroid, states I have no history of Thyroid issues when I have been on medication for underactive thyroid for 25 years. Incompetence kills. I have family history of various cancers and feel this kind of error can impact negatively on treatment received. A 10 month delay in being seen for an 'Urgent' investigation of large nodule found on my thyroid is unacceptable given the history
