Review titled Maternity Services
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Eleanor - Posted on 11 June 2024
I had my baby at Leighton in November 2023. I had also been an antenatal in-patient at various times during the 3rd trimester due to bleeding. At my 20wk ultrasound I was found to have a low lying placenta, which I was given detailed advice on measures to take to try and minimise chances of bleeding. I was given a lot of reassurance and support after this was found. I had my first haemorrhage at 29wks and my first antenatal stay. I was naturally terrified and the midwives and doctors in triage and obstetrics were fantastic. I was kept informed of plans and results. After the second haemorrhage, again the staff were phenomenal and talked me through everything that was going to happen or could happen. I had a million questions and they patiently answered everything and didn’t make me feel like a nuisance, despite how busy they were. When the decision was made to keep me in until delivery after the 4th bleed, the team even allowed me home for a few hours on ‘day release’ as I was going a little stir crazy after being stuck on the ward. The midwives were brilliant and offered endless support, despite the pressures of short staffing they faced. Not once did I feel like I received poor care or they didn’t have time to go through my worries or care. When the idea was floated that I’d need to have my baby delivered preterm, one of the midwives helped me advocate for myself to help keep my baby growing longer. The day of my c-section, the consultant reassured both myself and my husband. Although I did have a panic attack during the section, the staff were phenomenal at calming me down and not making me feel silly. I’d decided to breastfeed and I received the support on the postnatal ward when asked. A lactation consultant was available before and after delivery, again answering questions and offering guidance on latching. The maternity support workers & student midwives were brilliant too. Popping in to chat with me when I was alone in an empty ward and checking in on me postnatally too. One in particular helped me to latch my baby when I was upset and struggling with pain at 3am and taught me how to swaddle. She sat with me for a while and reassured me I wasn’t useless. The kindness and patience shown from all the maternity staff from the consultants through to the support workers, turned what would have been a traumatic pregnancy into a positive experience.

Attended for a total right hip replacement, from arriving at the treatment centre, seeing my consultant and anaesthetist everything was like a well oiled machine-excellent. After a general anaesthetic, surgery and time in recovery, well looked after, I was taken to Ward 9. I cannot thank all of the staff enough, from the cleaning staff up, the care and attention was second to none, they were all so busy but nothing was too much trouble.I am so grateful to our NHS and I’m hoping it will still be the same when I go in for the other hip , keep hold of the staff and I’m sure it will be. Thank you all. Sue

Review titled Awful service

Took my son in tonight after being told to wait 3 hours for an ambulance when he was experiencing difficulty breathing and wheezing from his chest. To get there and be seen initially quick and then for them to say the wait for the doctor was 9 hours. Stating that theyve only 4 doctors covering the whole of the hospital not just the A&E department. Waste of taxi money that could have been used to get to the gp tomorrow. Absolutely appalling. They should state the wait times before admittance. Especially when it comes to children.

Review titled Colonoscopy Procedure
by P Jones - Posted on 08 October 2023
Had this procedure at Leighton Treatment Centre. I was a bit nervous as not had this procedure done before. I had such lovely caring nurses from start to finish. Even had some chuckles with the other patients i was sat with in the waiting room. The procedure itself was quick painless, dignified and i was so relieved it was a breeze. Dignity is perfect. Can't thank the staff and the consultant enough as they made it such a relaxing and stress free procedure. Well done Leighton. You have had bad press in the past in different areas but in 30 years of being one of your patients i can only praise you all. Anyone going in for this procedure need only get past swallowing the drink it's very sickly but does the job perfectly.

Review titled Outstanding Care

I would like to thank all the staff who work on the Frail Elderly Assessment Unit at Leighton Hospital, for the high-quality care my 90-year-old mother received when she attended the unit on Tuesday 26th September 2023. Everyone was so kind and caring and nothing was too much trouble even though the unit was very busy. I was particularly impressed in the way everyone worked as a team to provide the best possible care and I liked the fact there was a consultant visible on the unit. I felt the doctor who was caring for Mum listened to me and I was consulted and kept informed as to what the plan would be for her care. Thorough tests were carried out and nothing was left to chance. There were some changes made to my mother’s medication and the pharmacists attached to the unit took time to explain these to me. They paid attention to detail, making sure my mother was prescribed medication which would be easy to swallow. The fantastic artwork in the long corridor is a great idea to help put people at their ease when reviewing mobility and completing assessments. Thank you once again – you are much appreciated!

Review titled Person Centred Care
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Susan - Posted on 15 October 2023
My husband was admitted to Leighton via the Emergency Department and it quickly became apparent how poorly he was. The care he received was exemplary in A & E, Ward 2 and Ward 3. I received support as his carer at every stage. I felt every effort was made to keep him pain-free and comfortable. All the staff he came into contact with were excellent. It always felt as if nothing was too much trouble. We were kept well-informed as a family. I would like to commend particularly the ward manager and all the staff on Ward 3, including the consultant and his medical team and also the physiotherapists, the dementia nurse and the palliative care team. I had no concerns whatsoever about his care. The only thing that I found difficult was in A & E there was a patient being supported by police officers and the abuse he was giving staff for several hours was very hard to hear. I have no idea what the solution would be.

I was really nervous and I could have turned back at any time, didn't want to be there. As soon as I was introduced to the team and they understood my concern, they immediately put my mind at rest. They were kind, thoughtful, helpful, understanding and caring. They explained my treatment in reassuring terms so I understood what would happen. Thank you very much to the team. You made me feel very happy. Thank you again.
