  1. Review titled Everyone has been so welcoming and kind

    by cygnusmp66 - Posted on 20 July 2023

My son was taken in to Musgrove with suspected appendicitis. After a month of pain and testing whatever they could we seem to be finally getting to the bottom of it. Even though a lot of this has been very frustrating in and out of the hospital and doctors and so horrible to see him in pain the nurses on the paediatric ward at Taunton have been absolutely amazing! Every single one that’s seen him have been so welcoming and kind and gone above and beyond for me and him and I can’t thank them enough.

  2. Review titled Wonderful treatment in Barrington ward

by Griff Barrett - Posted on 22 June 2023

To all staff in Barrington ward COVID treatment unit. From Griff Barrett I am sorry I had to leave without saying good bye but you need my bed and equipment for another poorly patient. I just want to say thank you to you all, you made my stay and treatment so wonderful from beginning to end. Happy cheerful smiling faces from beginning of shift to the end. Not to mention the food, it must be one of the best hotels I've stayed in. Thank you to the kitchen staff. Thank you all. I must admit I didn't realise how bad I was and don't think I would have pulled through without your treatment. Thank you. And a very special thank you from my wife Maureen who I think thought she was losing me. Thank you.

  3. Review titled My daughter having her first seizure

    by learningyx44 - Posted on 05 June 2023

The staff from the moment i stepped in reception were so welcoming giving so much reassurance. I am forever grateful for the support and care i received from the A&E department and pediatric department. It was stressful enough being so far away from home as we were on holiday but the staff were outstanding and i seriously wouldn't of wanted my daughter treated anywhere else. Thank you all

Dear learningyx44, Thank you for taking the precious time to share your comments about your experience here with us on the Children's unit in such worrying circumstances. It can be so stressful when your child is unwell, let alone when you are so far away from home too. I am glad that our colleagues on Acorn ward made this just slightly easier for you with their care, reassurance and welcome. I shall absolutely share this with our reception and A&E colleagues as well as the paediatric nurses and doctors that cared for your daughter that day including Dr Holly, who I know you met during your time with us on Acorn Ward. I do hope that your daughter has recovered and that she continues to stay in good health.

  4. Review titled Amazing Team

by Gertrude - Posted on 21 July 2023

I have just been an inpatient on Sheppard ward after 7 weeks , I was extremely poorly and things very touch n go , but the kindness and care from everyone on the ward was amazing . No more could’ve been done for me that wasn’t done or tried, the medical team of Doctors and consultants were all in sync they worked together , and as a patient I never once felt I was being ignored, or having carrots dangled . Hospitals are never a nice place to be but for anytime, but they got me well, gave me time, encouragement and really listened to my fears and opinions . I felt respected , I was treated like a human and nothing was too much for any of the staff or drs. I cried when I left , mainly through fear as I had been so very ill when I was admitted, but also it was like I was leaving my family behind .. so much respect to every single person who works on the ward, in the clinics, the departments around the hospital you have dealings with along with porters, and security . I always will turn to Musgrove when I’m in need of help they are absolutely second to non . I wouldn’t be here to write this if it had not been for those people .. Sheppard ward c bay I love you guys Thankyou from bottom of my heart

  5. Review titled Lovely nurses

    by Kgizmo21 - Posted on 07 June 2023

There were 2 lovely nurses in children's outpatients, they took the time to find veins in our 3 year old who was only numbed (by me) on her inner arms. She had plenty of veins on her not-numbed-hands because the GP had not mentiomed much other than inner arms. The nurses worked hard to make sure we could take blood from the numb part which is something every parent would rather happen. They were so nice thank you!

  6. Review titled Child having Grommets and Adenoidtonsilectomy

    by JJ12345 - Posted on 15 June 2023

We arrived at 7.30am ready for our child's surgery. We were welcomed and shown to the ward, we were really impressed by the amount of play facilities available for children and it kept our little boy entertained whilst we were waiting for him to be taken in. (He was first on the list, which was really helpful!) Communication and care were brilliant! Every nurse, HCA Dr, consultant and anaesthesiologist told us what was happening every step of the way, explained things well and asked if we had any concerns or questions (which they then answered all of!) We were very excited for the surgery to go ahead and everyone helped to put both us and our little boy at ease! The surgery was successful and everyone was so helpful and caring on our return to the ward, no amount of ice cream was too much! He even felt well enough to play on the amazing castle and slide and cuddle the guinea pigs! Medication was given and we had a really clear plan going forward and the surgeon came back to tell us how everything had gone and to see how our son was recovering in the immediate hours afterwards. We received discharge papers quickly and headed home. We were very impressed by the ward, the surgeons and the overall care given to our son and us as parents. Thank you!

Dear JJ12345 Wow, what fantastic feedback for everyone! I am so pleased your son’s surgery went so well and you were provided the upmost support and timely care needed to make your son’s stay as comfortable as possible. Your story highlights the incredible work all our staff colleagues contribute across teams and departments to ensure the care for our children, young people and their families is as optimal and streamlined as it can be. I am glad to hear every step in your son’s care was promptly delivered and well explained – I appreciate these things truly help to ensure your stay is as least stressful as possible. I am also delighted your son was able to spend time enjoying our play facilities and able to cuddle our resident guinea pigs! Our play specialists do such an amazing job in supporting our patients and families. Our play area is also a highly valued space within the Children’s unit - we are hugely grateful for all the kind contributions in funding and donated equipment we receive to create spaces for our children and families to play and relax in. We will share your feedback with everyone you kindly mentioned. We have already shared your feedback specifically with the ENT and Anaesthetic team leads who will disseminate your kind comments widely within their departments. I will also share your feedback with the staff members who looked after your son on Oak ward, the Play specialists and across the whole of the Children’s unit. Everyone will be thrilled to hear about your feedback and will greatly appreciate your thanks. I wish your son a speedy recovery following his surgery. Thank you Dr Holly

  7. Review titled Feeling let down

by Jacqui Archer - Posted on 04 May 2023

I was admitted to Musgrove on 2nd May 2023 with pain in upper ribs and back vomiting bile although raised temp tack cardiac I do understand I’m not the easiest patient due to underlying health conditions I felt very scared I had made it clear in admission I am immune compromised so couldn’t wait in a public area I had a temp of 38.3 and although the staff did manage to get my temp down I felt extremely unwell this is not my first issue with trusting this hospital so I tried to be positive and leave previous anxiety’s to one side . Ane doctor came and said I would be going mau to be treated for infection as he believed I had Acalculous cholecystitis due to me having a scan 3 weeks prior and showing thickening of Gaul bladder and my current symptoms. I had asked for a commode as I was in pain and couldn’t manage walking to the toilet it took over an hour to come and this was when I asked doctor for it as by this point I was crying in pain. He then informed me I was going to sdu and they expected me on my own in agony with anxiety to walk there with two big bags and sit in a public waiting area Although they new I was in immense pain and anxious around others due to my immune issues . Anyway I arrived after they got me a wheelchair and they left me in a waiting room full of people which resulted in me having a massive panic attack I was mortified after 20 minutes or so a nurse came and got me and she could see how distressed I was and she found me a cubicle so Thank-you to this lady then I’m seen by a doctor who says mri and check what’s going on as my gaul bladder may need to come out only for him to be over ridden loudly by another doctor who said buscapam and refer her to specialist outpatients ok fine Please bear in mind I had been vomiting bile since 1am the previous day and the anti sickness given had stopped that for around 3 hours prior he then wrote me a prescription for anti sickness pain killers and said buy some buscopam over counter. I left still in agony and my temp raised back to 37.9 by the time I got home my husband went to collect my meds from pharmacy to be told prescription had not been correctly filled out and couldn’t be used I was told in front of my husband it was Acalculous cholecystitis and the my liver enzymes were 2.5 over the normal limit So I called sdu and spoke to a lovely nurse again and she sorted out my prescription and said she would ensure my discharge summary would be re written reflecting the true nature of my visit my doctor called today and has started antibiotics as I’m still very unwell I look forward to seeing what happens next as I feel since I have past 10 stones in the last year as they said a year ago uncomplicated and I’ve done this at home in agony as I have no trust in the hospital and now I’ve passed them I’m told I have to wait again even though I have raised liver enzymes and am extremely unwell I appreciate times are hard but being treated like this is not ok

  9. Review titled Excellent Hospital

by Mary Smith - Posted on 25 May 2023

I had surgery here 18 months ago and couldn't fault the hospital then and on 23rd of this monthI had to have a procedure at the day surgery. Didn't know how this would compare with main hospital building but no worries as it was amazing also. Clean wards, friendly staff who all made everyone feel at ease and nothing was too much trouble. Have been in many hospitals over the years but Musgrove Park takes some beating. How the staff, nurses and doctors all stay so cheerful yet professional in this day and age, is beyond me but they do and I send big thanks to them all for their care and attention also their efficiency.

  10. Review titled All the staff were great, very friendly.

    by januarybc59 - Posted on 30 May 2023

Overall very happy with everything, there's just a few things from a parents perspective that could make things much easier when our little ones are ill and being looked after in hospital. For 20 years of having children that have all 3 at some point had to stay on childrens ward, I've never known there was a parents kitchen we could use until yesterday, or a little garden for them to play in, it would be really helpful to be told about those little things as it makes a huge difference to just be able to go and make yourself a coffee or to ask family to bring you in some food you can make in the kitchen. (I realised after, that there's a sign on the door for parents kitchen but there are so many signs everywhere you go that you don't actually notice them because they just look like another bit of paper stuck to a wall or door) I also was only made aware today that breastfeeding mums can have food provided for them, (perhaps a question to ask on arrival) I was really happy to be able to bed share with my little girl as that's what we do at home, and staff were very positive about it. The ward and rooms are very hot and when you have a little one with a fever it can be very hard to keep their temperature down and it's extremely uncomfortable to sleep in or for them to be comfortable in, I'm not sure why there's not a fan in every room instead of it being shared around between rooms or the staff having to hunt one down. the heat is unbearable especially during the summer months. I was really impressed with the new healthy choices on the children's menu. All the staff were great, very friendly, helpful and willing to help in any way.

Dear Januarybc59 My name is Dr Holly and I am a member of the Paediatric team who responds to patient and family feedback. May I firstly thank you for the time you have given in sharing your experiences about your time with us. The points you have raised are hugely valuable for our learning, guiding what areas we need to improve upon so our care is as best as it can be for our patients, young people and their families. I am very happy you received such great support from all the staff who looked after you and your daughter, which as a Children’s unit we always aim to provide. I am also pleased your daughter was able to take full advantage of our meal choices - we understand the benefits and importance of good nutrition, so we give careful consideration into the meal choices we provide for our children and young people on our ward. We regularly involve our dietetic colleagues to improve food choices and options for specific dietary requirements. I am also glad you were able to benefit from our parental sleeping facilities. We provide both parental bedrooms and sleeper chair options for parents to sleep in the cubicles and bays so you are able to be with your children at all times. We truly appreciate the importance of ensuring families and children are made as comfortable as possible during their hospital stay as it can be a hugely stressful time for you all. Access and knowledge of our facilities and services to support you through this is of upmost importance to us. So, I am saddened you experienced a lack of proactive communication about our dedicated family and children’s spaces during your stay and during your previous admissions and the temperature was unable to be managed optimally for your daughter. On behalf of the Paediatric department I apologise for the difficulties you experienced during your stay with us. We recognise that as the Children’s unit based within the older buildings of the hospital, we have challenges with regulating the temperatures. In endeavour to solve this problem we have upgraded acorn ward in the past which included reflective roof panels to maintain a cooler temperature. Moving forward, having spoken to my unit Manager we are going to invest in Fans to be available in every cubicle on the ward. Your feedback has been shared immediately with Dr Gita Modgil (our Associate Medical Director for Paediatrics and CAMHS, Children, Young people and Families Service Group), Caroline Jackson and Stuart Adams (our Managerial team). Together we are exploring ways in which we can improve how we highlight and provide information about our facilities and services we provide our patients and families in a more clear and accessible manner. Suggestions include patient information leaflets to be given to families on their admission to the ward. If you have any other ideas about how we could do this or if you have seen any other areas do this in a more optimal way we would love to hear from you. Going forward, I will share your feedback with our staff colleagues across the whole of the Children’s unit through direct correspondence, Ward and Departmental meetings. Here we will emphasise the importance for staff to actively provide verbal information about the facilities available when patients and families are admitted to our ward. We will keep you informed of the changes made via Care Opinion. Importantly, we would very much like to hear from you and we invite you to further discuss your experiences and to explore any other ideas you may have to improve our care. Should you wish to contact us please email our unit Manager Caroline Jackson directly via Caroline.Jackson@SomersetFT.nhs.uk. We really do appreciate your feedback comments, so again thank for giving your time in sharing your story. Yours sincerely Dr Holly Mincher
