Review titled All the staff were great, very friendly.
by januarybc59 - Posted on 30 May 2023
Overall very happy with everything, there's just a few things from a parents perspective that could make things much easier when our little ones are ill and being looked after in hospital. For 20 years of having children that have all 3 at some point had to stay on childrens ward, I've never known there was a parents kitchen we could use until yesterday, or a little garden for them to play in, it would be really helpful to be told about those little things as it makes a huge difference to just be able to go and make yourself a coffee or to ask family to bring you in some food you can make in the kitchen. (I realised after, that there's a sign on the door for parents kitchen but there are so many signs everywhere you go that you don't actually notice them because they just look like another bit of paper stuck to a wall or door) I also was only made aware today that breastfeeding mums can have food provided for them, (perhaps a question to ask on arrival) I was really happy to be able to bed share with my little girl as that's what we do at home, and staff were very positive about it. The ward and rooms are very hot and when you have a little one with a fever it can be very hard to keep their temperature down and it's extremely uncomfortable to sleep in or for them to be comfortable in, I'm not sure why there's not a fan in every room instead of it being shared around between rooms or the staff having to hunt one down. the heat is unbearable especially during the summer months. I was really impressed with the new healthy choices on the children's menu. All the staff were great, very friendly, helpful and willing to help in any way.

Dear Januarybc59 My name is Dr Holly and I am a member of the Paediatric team who responds to patient and family feedback. May I firstly thank you for the time you have given in sharing your experiences about your time with us. The points you have raised are hugely valuable for our learning, guiding what areas we need to improve upon so our care is as best as it can be for our patients, young people and their families. I am very happy you received such great support from all the staff who looked after you and your daughter, which as a Children’s unit we always aim to provide. I am also pleased your daughter was able to take full advantage of our meal choices - we understand the benefits and importance of good nutrition, so we give careful consideration into the meal choices we provide for our children and young people on our ward. We regularly involve our dietetic colleagues to improve food choices and options for specific dietary requirements. I am also glad you were able to benefit from our parental sleeping facilities. We provide both parental bedrooms and sleeper chair options for parents to sleep in the cubicles and bays so you are able to be with your children at all times. We truly appreciate the importance of ensuring families and children are made as comfortable as possible during their hospital stay as it can be a hugely stressful time for you all. Access and knowledge of our facilities and services to support you through this is of upmost importance to us. So, I am saddened you experienced a lack of proactive communication about our dedicated family and children’s spaces during your stay and during your previous admissions and the temperature was unable to be managed optimally for your daughter. On behalf of the Paediatric department I apologise for the difficulties you experienced during your stay with us. We recognise that as the Children’s unit based within the older buildings of the hospital, we have challenges with regulating the temperatures. In endeavour to solve this problem we have upgraded acorn ward in the past which included reflective roof panels to maintain a cooler temperature. Moving forward, having spoken to my unit Manager we are going to invest in Fans to be available in every cubicle on the ward. Your feedback has been shared immediately with Dr Gita Modgil (our Associate Medical Director for Paediatrics and CAMHS, Children, Young people and Families Service Group), Caroline Jackson and Stuart Adams (our Managerial team). Together we are exploring ways in which we can improve how we highlight and provide information about our facilities and services we provide our patients and families in a more clear and accessible manner. Suggestions include patient information leaflets to be given to families on their admission to the ward. If you have any other ideas about how we could do this or if you have seen any other areas do this in a more optimal way we would love to hear from you. Going forward, I will share your feedback with our staff colleagues across the whole of the Children’s unit through direct correspondence, Ward and Departmental meetings. Here we will emphasise the importance for staff to actively provide verbal information about the facilities available when patients and families are admitted to our ward. We will keep you informed of the changes made via Care Opinion. Importantly, we would very much like to hear from you and we invite you to further discuss your experiences and to explore any other ideas you may have to improve our care. Should you wish to contact us please email our unit Manager Caroline Jackson directly via Caroline.Jackson@SomersetFT.nhs.uk. We really do appreciate your feedback comments, so again thank for giving your time in sharing your story. Yours sincerely Dr Holly Mincher

Review titled The nurses were fab!
by woodpigeonbw75 - Posted on 08 June 2023
The nurses were fab! They made us feel very comfortable and were very encouraging and engaging with my son who was nervous to have his first blood test! There was no fuss just lots of support and kindness and it was all done in a flash and we had no upset from my son at all. Thank you for making a situation that felt like it would have been stressful so easy!

Good afternoon woodpigeonbw75, How wonderful to receive your positive feedback for our amazing nurse team providing the blood (phlebotomy) clinic in our Children's out patient unit. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience highlighting support, kindness and encouragement for your son. Having a blood test is not easy - especially when it is your first one - for your child or for you as a parent, so I am so pleased that our nursing colleagues made this as smooth and reassuring for you both as possible. We are working on a plan to further expand this service for children and young people, so your feedback will further influence development of this. I am delighted to share this with my wonderful nursing colleagues who are working there today - they will be thrilled, thank you.

Dear Uniformtz76 Many thanks for your kind feedback! I am extremely glad to hear you and your son were very pleased with the care you received during your stay with us. It is very kind of you to give particular mention to Oak ward. They work so diligently to ensure their patients and families are given the upmost supportive care during their admission. It is a pleasure to hear you were satisfied with the care Oak ward staff members provided to help you and your son through your own admission, which I wholly appreciate would have been a worrisome time for you both. I do hope your son’s pain has now fully resolved. I will share your lovely comments with the whole of the Children’s unit and especially Oak ward and the staff members who looked after your son. Everyone will be hugely appreciative of your kind comments. Thank you! Dr Holly

Review titled The staff were fantastic, very comforting and reassuring.
by C fear - Posted on 24 April 2023
My son was admitted to hospital by the doctor at our local surgery. He was seen by several different people, i.e nurses, doctors, surgeons. Everyone tried to do the best for him but eventually decided that surgery was the best option. My son was in a lot of pain and was very quick taken to surgery. I was a very emotional mum who kept crying but it’s not easy watching you child being in so much pain and not being able to do anything. The staff were fantastic, very comforting and reassuring. They allowed me to stay with my son as much as possible. After surgery, on the ward, well I couldn’t fault it. Everyone who saw my son was brilliant, not just how they cared for him but how they spoke to him. Some of the staff made jokes about things but that was how we liked it. It made him feel more at ease. My son was happy to be at the other end of the surgery but felt safe at the hospital, so much so that he didn’t really want to come home. He had surgery on ‘his private parts’ which for anyone is a big thing but my son handled it really well but that is thanks to all the help and support we had from every member of staff that we saw in our 2 day stay. I would never hesitate in going back if needed. Thanks to everyone.

Good Afternoon C Fear, Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback about your son's and family's experience on Oak ward (Paediatric Unit) during his time with us under the care of paediatrics and urology teams. I am delighted to hear that not only did his surgery go well, relieving his symptoms, but also that his care was individualised for his own specific needs. I am glad to hear that our teams were also able to support, comfort and reassure you - it can, of course, be challenging emotionally when your child is not well especially when they are in pain. It's great to hear that your son felt so safe that he wanted to stay with us! Our team is particularly grateful for your positive feedback and experience, as we are currently working hard to gain more feedback for Oak ward particularly - to further improve our care for children and young people. As clinical teams we are also currently focusing on enhancing joint working and collaboration between our surgical and paediatric colleagues - so I shall definitely share your positive feedback with our urology colleagues and wider paediatric department teams. I wish your son an ongoing speedy recovery.

Review titled My son's eye accident
by Igarrad - Posted on 26 April 2023
My son came in to have stitches put by his eye as he cut it open, came in at 7:30 am and the whole time the staff were amazing making my 3 year old feel comfortable. They was quick to get him seen and in theatre so he wasn't waiting around worried. They went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable and that I was ok as I was obviously worried about him. They got him lots of arts and crafts and toys to play with and asked if he wanted food and drink! They were all so smiley and caring -it made our horrible situation a lot more bearable... So THANK YOU TO EVERYONE

Review titled PPV corrective surgery of my 4 yr old son
by horologiumqd46 - Posted on 10 May 2023
My son had a patent processus vaginalis which was diagnosed in October 2023. We were waiting for corrective, elective surgery and monitoring the hernia it caused in the meantime. In April we had to take him to A and E as the hernia would not reduce, which can be serious. It reduced on our 50 minute journey to Musgrove, but the doctor still wanted to check him over so we returned the morning after. This became our initial consultation with the surgeon. A POAC nurse gave me a pre-operative form to fill in and we were informed we would be called/sent a letter with a date for surgery within the month. A few days later the operation was booked for that Friday. The service and care were exceptional, professional and caring. The timing was prompt and the information given to my son was age appropriate and calmly delivered. I had questions for the anaesthetist (a part of the procedure that worried me the most), which were answered clearly and kindly. I felt prepared and supported throughout the experience, something that we, as a family, had never experienced before. My son was calm but a bit quiet. He did not experience any fear or panic to my knowledge, just a normal level of nervous apprehension. This was due to the excellent service and efficiency of the team at Musgrove.

Dear Horologiumqd46 What fantastic feedback! Thank you so much for giving your time in sharing your experience about your son’s stay with us. I am delighted you experienced such excellent service and supportive care from all of the specialty teams and individuals whom were involved in your son’s care. Our staff members within the Children’s unit, cross-specialty teams and departments work so diligently together to ensure care is as optimal and as co-ordinated as it can possibly be. I appreciate it makes such a difference during the stressful and worrisome times when your child needs hospital care and especially so when events and care needs become escalated requiring timely treatment. I do hope your son is now fully recovered or well on the way to a full recovery after his surgery. I am also pleased you received all the information you needed and it was clearly communicated to you and given at an age appropriate level for your son. We understand communication is such an important aspect of care for patients and their families and I am glad you received this consistently well- including pre-admission and during your stay with us. I have passed on your wonderful feedback to the surgical and anaesthetic departmental Leads. They will kindly share your feedback with their respective colleagues whom looked after your son. I have also shared your feedback with the staff members who looked after your son on Oak Ward and the whole of the Children’s unit. Everyone will be extremely happy to hear about your feedback and will be hugely grateful of your kind comments. Many thanks again. Dr Holly
