  1. Review titled What an amazing consultant and team

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Elizabeth Altinkaya - Posted on 24 May 2024

I attended cardiology today. From my very first interaction with the lady on reception to all those that I saw and especially my consultant the service I received was absolutely outstanding. They were all extremely kind, polite and well mannered. Treated me with respect. The department was immaculately clean. I was seen exactly on time. Was greeted by smiles from everyone. I must say my consultant was an absolute delight. His sense of humour, kindness and level of patient care was second to none. He explained everything to me very clearly and explained the next steps. He made me feel at ease and I feel completely safe in his hands. I cannot thank him and the team enough for the care I received today. I'm very grateful. What an amazing place. 10/10

  2. Review titled Possible scam

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Stephanie Turley - Posted on 04 May 2024

I came to the hospital yesterday with my elderly mother to have surgery to her pace maker. The staff were faultless very caring and we were treated with the greatest of respect. My issue was when leaving the hospital. I had a wheelchair for my mother and I put her hold-all on the back of the wheelchair. As we got to the exit a young man came frantically up to us asking if we had finished with the wheelchair as he was desperate for it. I quickly got my 95 year old mother out of the wheelchair totally concentrating on her and the wheelchair and the young man had gone - with the hold-all on the chair - nowhere to be seen. I have since been in touch with reception and subsequently security at NGH and left my details. No bag has been found. Im concerned that this is a scam and that this man was focusing on vulnerable people hoping to obtain valuables in the bag. Fortunately there was not too much of value only my mother’s hearing aid which she paid £1500 and will have to pay again. I think patients and their relatives should be made aware of this Thanks for your time.

We are really pleased to hear that your mother received good quality care and was treated with respect. However, we are really sorry to hear about the issue you experienced when you were leaving with your mother, and the loss of the hold-all bag. We are sorry for the loss of your personal belongings that has resulted from this. We are glad to hear that you have contacted security about this already, but we are sorry that your bag has not been recovered. We have also raised this with our security team to be aware of, and they have advised that they are not aware of any other similar incidents. We would also recommend contacting the PALS team, so that we can investigate this matter in more detail. Please contact our PALS team on 0114 271 2400 or by emailing sth.pals@nhs.net. Dear team .. I would like to chosen to express my immense gratitude for what you do every day. All my family and I recognize all the dedication and care they give to all patients, often without rest: day, night, late into the night, without even a moment for a cup of coffee, in this arduous work routine that is one of the greatest gifts. Congratulations for dedicating your lives to the well-being of others, for carrying the responsibility of bringing life and comforting in losses, for alleviating the suffering of the sick and leading them to healing. May God continue to bless each one of you, protecting you from all harm. May He empower and renew your strength with each new dawn, each new shift, each new day. Congratulations on the exemplary and impactful work you do. You are true healthcare heroes! Many thanks All is 5*

  4. Review titled Dreadful Reception area care

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Mrs Janet Hassall - Posted on 08 June 2024

I have been red carded for cauda equina, an emergency spinal condition. I went to A&E because I had a UTI - urinary difficulties are a sign of cauda equina - severe back pain and sciatica in both legs. I waited for an hour on a chair. Sitting on a chair causes unbearable pain. The receptionists told me that the A&E department had nowhere i could lie down to wait to be seen, not even a trolley. I was prepared to wait but couldn't bear the increasing pain caused by sitting in a chair. So I went home - with a potentially catastrophic conditiion. Eventually I saw my GP but the casual cruelty of not being able to make patients with intolerable pain comfortable in the A & E waiting area is unacceptable. There is an atmosphere that seems to suspect all patients of being hypocondriachs, people with mental health problems or just plain nuisances. I'm reluctant to do it because of the strain it'll put on the system, but next time if I get one of the cauda equina red carded symptoms, I'll call an ambulance as the clinician at the 111 service advised me to do.

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to share your feedback and we are really sorry to read that you had a poor experience attending our A&E department due to the discomfort you were in with the pain you were experiencing due to having to wait on a chair and no other waiting space being available for you. We are sorry to hear that you chose to leave the waiting area due to feeling so uncomfortable while waiting in a chair, this sounds like a very difficult decision to have taken and we are sorry that you felt you had no other option due to the lack of bed/trolley availability to wait on. In order for us to be able to investigate this matter and provide you with more information specific to your situation, please contact our PALS team on 0114 271 2400 or by emailing sth.pals@nhs.net. 6. Review titled Unexpectedly inadequate Spinal Clinic

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Mrs Janet Hassall - Posted on 08 June 2024

I was referred to the Spinal Surgeons because of severe spinal stenosis and the possibility of cauda equina, an emergency spinal condition. The appointment was surprisingly not with a spinal surgeon despite Muscular Skeletal physiotherapist having consulted a surgeon who had confirmed that surgery was needed, it was another assessment for surgery with an orthopaedic physiotherapist. There were unfortunately many interruptions to the appointment. I have some symptoms of slow onset cauda equina and even thogh I'm grateful that the therapist put me on the waiting list for surgery, I'm disappointed in the care offered whilst I wait for surgery. I was referred to Pain Management as I have intolerable Sciatica in both legs. I am 74 and so not physically robust and the spinal stenosis causes changes in posture putting strain on inappropriate back muscles and adding to the pain. I would have thought that, particularly because I had a 10 month wait in which to continue to deteriorate and because the Spinal Service at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is a Centre of Excellence, some support from a physiotherapist would have been part of the routine interim care I should have been offered. But it wasn't.

The doctors and receptionists were really lovely when I came. I was by myself and as a younger woman, was quite anxious and they made me feel at ease and helped the experience. Really thankful!

  8. Review titled Terrific treatment

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Peter Jackson - Posted on 14 April 2024

Started with a fever, 24 hrs later my foot swelled up and was red and sore. I decided to bypass the GP as my foot looked awful. Arrived at A&E (N General) at about 7.30am. I was seen promptly, triaged, blood's taken and assessed by the consultant by 1045. It was diagnosed as cellulitis and IV antibiotics given. Blood's came back as ok so I was allowed home with antibiotics to take at home. In light of the constant moans about the NHS I want to place on record how terrific the treatment and care I received were. The staff were cheerful, positive and efficient, without exception. I am very grateful.

Amazingly compassionate consultant on my A&E visit (28/3) who looked after my condition with empathy and was just genuine kind. Nursing staff on AMU where I remained for a further day and a half were also calm and caring. Support staff were also very approachable and friendly.
