  1. Review titled The worst hospital in the uk

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Edward Ashford - Posted on 13 April 2023

I had a scan which revealed I may need to have my appendix removed. A referral call was made to my mobile by a specialist. He spoke so poorly on the phone I could not understand the mobile he had left to call him back on. With something so important why can't you ask people with clear precise communication to call you. As the hospital block all return calls I had to go back through the switchboard. At 4.30pm the unhelpful switchboard operator said why don't you call appointment services in the morning?. The last time I neded to call them back I spent 3 days from 9 to 5 on the phone with no answer. I was put through ultra scan department after 25 mins of the phone ringing I gave up. Both city & QMC are a zero out of 5 service. No one answers the phone no one communicates their intentions correctly appointments are double booked in two different hospitals at the same time. Nobody answers the phone and note taking is non existent. I have rang 5 times over the last 4 weeks to advise I have run out of medication for my chrones. After 17 working days they have still not released the perscriptions. This hospital is diabolical.

  2. Review titled Left feeling like I was wasting your time.

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Rachel Tipler - Posted on 13 March 2023

I was referred by my Doctor to the Breast Institute Clinic for a lump found in my breast, I attended on Sat 4th March. The clinic was running very behind time which no one who attended seemed to mind. The first Dr I saw was lovely and examined me then sent me through to have a mammogram again the nurse that did this was lovely and apologised for the delay. While sat waiting for the ultrasound scan as the next step the door opened and myself and another patient heard the nurse who had done the mammogram say sorry there are still patients (I presumed she was saying this to the Dr). I was called through and prepared for the ultrasound - the next Dr was very brusque - and seemed judgmental that I had had breast reduction surgery previously, he pressed really hard with the equipment on my breast which hurt , he asked the nurse for a needle to draw off a sample from the lump when he abruptly turned and said 'don't bother theres another one, its a simple cyst' the nurse seemed a bit embarrassed and said to me 'thats good news isn't it' . The Dr said nothing more, put down the equipment and walked out the room - he didn't even bother to explain what he had found or say goodbye. I got the feeling he was late for something because of the delays that day and that as the last patients we were an inconvenience to him. It may have in the end been a 'simple cyst' but I had been waiting for almost two weeks for that appointment, where it was not known what it was, he did not seem to take into account the worry and stress that may have been caused while I was waiting for a diagnosis. I just hope that if any of the ladies attending that day was to be given bad news that he treated them differently. To be honest I was left a bit gobsmacked at how bad his general manor was. I had to ask the nurse if I was to go home now. He could have said yes its a simple cyst but its always best to get it checked after all my own Dr thought it was enough to refer me I didn't just take myself there. I admire and appreciate our Drs but this experience has left me feeling like I wouldn't want to bother you again if something happened further down the line, which the more I think about it, is totally wrong and why I am writing this now. He should not be treating vulnerable patients like that. His patients may not be a clever as him but they are human beings with feelings

  3. Review titled This system seems very inflexible

    by circinusry99 - Posted on 03 February 2023

My dr has referred me for an MRI scan on my knee. I have been disabled from birth and so have a history of many operations on my legs and spine and have received orthotic care all of my life. I have a possible injury to my knee which is causing immense pain and making life more difficult for me to function daily. I am having to use my wheelchair more as I can’t move around as I used to as my knee is not able to support me walking due to pain. This is causing other problems - my hands and wrists are painful due to having to use my wheelchair more, I’m not sleeping and trying to work and get around is very difficult. I’ve been called today to arrange a telephone appointment with a physio in another week's time for them to assess me to decide what treatment I need. How can a knee be assessed by phone? It just feels that a dr, having seen my knee and made an assessment based on my medical history, known disability, and by examining my knee thought that I needed an MRI. But it seems I have to jump through many hoops just to get some treatment and is just delaying any treatment that may be available. I can’t move my legs already due to my disability and so I’m not sure what a physiological can offer. I’m close to having to have time off work due to this issue, which I really don’t want to do. I know it’s important to get the right treatment and physio can be beneficial in some cases, but with more complicated cases where there is a history and an examination by a sr has taken place there ought to be some flexibility. I know it’s important to offer treatments which take pressure off other services, but this system seems very inflexible and one where everyone is treated the same despite known history which will not fit a tick box exercise. It’s just adding to extreme pain on a situation which was already difficult and challenging. I really don’t want to visit A&E as it’s not life threatening, but understand why people do to try and navigate a system which is seems to be one size fits all.

  5. Review titled Staff going above and beyond

    by wezenzy37 - Posted on 08 February 2023

Our mum was sent to Barclay ward today post bronchoscopy. I am literally blown away by the kindness and care shown to not only her but myself and my sister. The staff were compassionate, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. They went above and beyond to get mum home early and safely. I cannot thank you enough for today.

  7. Review titled Occupational therapy

Rated 1 star out of 5

    by K Bradshaw - Posted on 16 January 2023

I was advised 5 days ago that there was no treatment available for my condition . I was also advised that occ . health need to assess my needs before I can go home. The major problem is that it is impossible to contact this department to by phone or email to discuss the matter. It is left to when this department decides to turn up.

  8. Review titled Inconsistent care

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Jessica Warren - Posted on 02 January 2023

I went into labour on the 28th December and the staff on the labour suite couldn't do enough for me, they were fantastic. They took care of me and treated me as if I were their only patient. However. On the 29th, I was taken to the Bonnington Ward around 6pm. I hadn't been asked if I wanted any dinner, but wasn't aware of what time it was as I'd not had any sleep due to a potential infection I had. I had to ask for food on the ward. To which I got given a sandwich??? I was told on the 30th I could go home, this was around 12.30pm. I was still sat waiting for the paeds doctor to come see me at 9pm. To which I had to assume I wasn't going home. Nobody updated me at all on what was happening I just kept getting told when I asked "they're on their way." Subsequently I had to stay another night unnecessarily. Whilst on the ward the care seemed minimal. I felt as if I was just shoved in a room out the way. Some staff were lovely, but there were staff members who would just come in and hand me a cup with tablets. And I had to ask for water to take them. 2 occasions I was asked "do you need it now" how do you expect patients to take 4 tablets without fluids!? When i was eventually discharged on the 31st the midwife that dealt with me went out of her way to make sure the Paeds Doctor saw me so I could go home. She was fantastic. However, my community midwife came on the 1st and asked if my stitches had been checked the day before (i had a 3degree tear) and had to be cut and stitched due to having give birth with assistance from forceps. My stitches were not checked at all the whole duration of my stay. Surely if my notes say I was taking 2 lots of Antibiotics due to an infection (that was being treated as sepsis as precautions) you'd think my stitches would be checked daily incase any further infection occurred? Is this not negligence on your NHS Trusts part. Fortunately they are okay, but a massive case of neglect on the wards part. A lot of the time I felt as if it was an inconvenience when I pressed the buzzer for assistance. I wasn't aware it was my job to turn it off either, which was impossible for me to do as it was behind me and i had stitches. I once heard a member of staff say (because the buzzer hadn't been turned off) 'what does she want' in a complaining Manor. The toilet wasn't exactly functionable. Toilet paper never flushed so was constantly blocked. The day I arrived on the ward the toilet had a bed pan full of urine in it, that I had to ask to be removed so I could use the toilet myself. As I say there were some great staff on that helped me out when I was upset about not being able to go home and my baby being distressed. But a lot of the time I felt like "just another patient." I think the wards should have a similar care to that of the team on the labour suite because, yes I was fine and am recovering well, but I'd been through the mill during labour and that extra bit of time and effort goes a long way.

Hi Jessica, Thank you for leaving us feedback, I’m so glad that your delivery was so memorable and that you received the best care possible whilst in the labour suite. The memories that you make in those early days are so precious which is why I’m saddened to hear that it changed so significantly on admission. Please be assured that I will forward this comment onto the matron in maternity and there are a few parts of this feedback that you may wish to discuss further and we would be happy to put you in touch with the department please contact us on QMCPET@nuh.nhs.uk and we will get in touch. 10. Review titled Amazing staff

    by Nottm2022 - Posted on 22 March 2023

My Dad passed away on the Gervis Pearson ward in Dec 2022, after being on the ward for approx. six weeks. Every single member of staff on the ward - day and night were just amazing (including catering staff and cleaners). The level of care they provided for my Dad and for the rest of the family was second to none. They call nurses angels for a reason (and healthcare assistants are the same breed). What was the worst time of our lives was made bearable by the care Dad was shown. It will never be forgotten. People are keen to tell their "nightmare" stories but we are less likely to tell/hear of the positives stories. Our NHS is amazing and the staff on the Gervis Pearson ward epitomise just why that is. Thank you.
