  1. Review titled Excellent staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by michael anthony woolley - Posted on 26 July 2023

I attended the Ocular Oncology department on Monday 24th July for the treatment on the tumour in my right eye. I must say that my treatment by the staff at the hospital has been absolutely fantastic. All staff have been excellent, but in particular, the two nurses who pushed me around in a wheelchair and looked after me (I'm not allowed to name them in this review) All in all they made what isn't the nicest of experiences much more bearable. Thank you all so much.

  2. Review titled Excellent care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Peter Green - Posted on 20 July 2023

Visited today & was seen by a very professional & warm junior consultant. She examined me thoroughly, gave me her recommendations re: treatment & then brought in a more senior consultant to give a second opinion. The level of care shown by both of them was exemplary; they explained in really easy to understand language what they recommended, fielded my questions patiently & showed immense flexibility in terms of availability & preferred treatment. I have a basal cell cancer on my nose & a possible squamous cell carcinoma on my right temple, both of which will need removal. Can’t praise them & the really kind, communicative & efficient nurse enough (and this was on one of the consultant strike days!

  3. Review titled Couldn’t have been better

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I was so impressed by the treatment from the team at the Endoscopy Unit. They were amazing from start to finish - caring, welcoming, able to put me at ease and highly professional. They really took the time to make sure I was OK and I felt like they really saw me as a person. I got the results straight away and understood everything they said, even though my first language isn’t English. I was also really impressed with the facilities and the centre in general. Thanks so much to the whole team.

Referred by another hospital to the Hallamshire out of hours ophthalmic team. Involvement in care, provision of information, friendliness, professionalism & clinical effectiveness was quite superb.

  5. Review titled Brilliant practice and care.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Megan Wallace - Posted on 06 May 2023

I had undergone surgery on the 2nd of May and I stayed on f2 for 3 nights. The gynae-oncology team who have treated me have been brilliant. All the nurses on ward f2 were fantastic and extremely caring during my recovery. They listened to any of my problems and dealt with them quickly and efficiently. I cannot thank you all enough for the brilliant work you all do. All the trainee nurses and doctors were also fantastic and are a credit to your hospital. Thank you again. The after care treatment I will be receiving in the following weeks fills me with the knowledge that I know I will be well cared for and looked after. I would like to thank one trainee nurse who cared for me during the day in particular from the 2nd of May to the 5th of May. You made me feel so at ease with everything and helped me so much. Thank you to you all.

  6. Review titled Saved my daughter

Rated 5 stars out of 5

    by L J Stead - Posted on 06 July 2023

I just wanted to send a heartfelt thanks to all the Neurology team. My daughter was rushed into hospital following a seizure. A quick diagnosis identified that she had autoimmune encephalitis. The illness is soul destroying to watch in action but the quick diagnosis led to quick treatment and she recovered in a miraculously quick time. This all leads to a better outcome in the long term. She's at home now and doing well. I wanted to thanks all the Drs and nurses who were so professional and thorough in their job (her treatment is ongoing) as well as the support staff who looked after us, as basically me and my wife moved in with her. The hospital became our second home (to be honest it started to feel like our first home). The team that brought her and us food, drink and bedding etc were so friendly to her and made a fuss of her. The media rightly hails the work Drs and nurses do but that support team were important as well. I know I cannot name individuals here but those who looked after her will know who they are as this illness is so rare. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. You are a credit to your profession.

  7. Review titled Phone staff are ridiculous

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 04 May 2023

Every time you try to call and get through to rearrange an appointment because they keep booking you random appointments. Iv tild them numerous times to out on my records the timings I can do. I’m always on hind for 40plus minutes. Today I rang I was number 3 within 3 minutes I was number 2, on hold for 40 minutes and it turned 5 o clock instead of clearing the backlog calls in the system, they forwarded all calls to answer machine and the department is now closed. What an absolute joke. Why it takes 40 plus minutes to answer 2 calls is beyond me, and then to just put the phone down. No1 has the time to be wasting around calling again and again. There needs to be another way to rearrange or cancel appointments and the staff need retraining. As nhs policy is always clear calls that are waiting in que anything after 5pm automatically goes to answer machine or message.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your difficulties with getting in touch to discuss rearranging an appointment. We are really sorry to hear about your experience, and appreciate that you feel frustrated about this. Most services in the hospital now use partial booking- a process by which the patient is sent a letter asking them to call to arrange an appointment which is then mutually agreed and therefore booked at a time that suits the patient. The Patient Booking Hub, which supports a large number of services across the hospital has phone lines which are open 8am- 8pm on weekdays and 8am-2pm on Saturdays. Given that, in your experience, the calls were forwarded to answering machine after 5pm, it is likely that your experience is with a service that has not yet moved to the Patient Booking Hub and manage their appointments locally, outside of the above process. We are sorry to hear that you have had difficulty with accessing the appointment line to try to rearrange your appointment and would like to share your concerns with the relevant team so that they can look at addressing this. In order for us to look into this issue and pass concerns onto the relevant team, please contact our PALS team to formally raise this concern. They will ask you to share some personal details so that we can investigate this matter in detail. The PALS team can be contacted on 0114 271 2400 or by emailing sth.pals@nhs.net

  8. Review titled Lack of Communication

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Neville Oxnard - Posted on 07 May 2023

This comment relates specifically to the Pals function of the nhs which as far as I am concerned is non-responsive/non-existent. I have had occasion to contact Pals at the Hallamshire on 2 occasions this year and Pals at the Royal,Chesterfield on several occasions. A response has never been forthcoming. How are you supposed to get assistance when departments are performing poorly when even Pals do not respond. The Administration and bookings teams need a good shake-up if the nhs is to avoid needlessly wasting money.

  9. Review titled Allowed my dignity

    by ophiuchuszc66 - Posted on 19 May 2023

the care I received from the nurses at the hospital were absolutely amazing. I had so many undignified moments and they made sure that I was treated with dignity the whole time I was there I’ve never been cared for or looked after like that in my life. They were amazing.

  10. Review titled Communication during MRI scan

    by Dr je39 - Posted on 19 April 2023

Overall this was an excellent and reasonably comfortable experience. I had a head scan with contrast. The radiographer inserted a cannula into my arm and I went into the scanner. Half way through I had the contrast injected. Everything was fine. It was explained to me about the contrast and how long the procedure would take. I had the 'inflation bulb' in my left hand in case I needed any help or felt claustrophobic. I just wanted to feedback to the team that it would have been really helpful to know that they were going to start talking to me through a speaker somewhere in the canopy. When they did it startled me and I think I may have moved. Also I tried to reply to the information, realising later that they probably couldn't hear me. Again this may have caused my head to move. The radiographer said to me afterwards that there had been some movement at one point and maybe that was it...? This could have been avoided with those little bits of information. It might be that other people have had this experience. I was trying really hard to keep perfectly still - I have asthma and neck and shoulder pains and I was uncomfortable but managing. I felt quite disappointed that I had moved and maybe affected the scan, through my ignorance of what to expect during the procedure. I guess they do so many that these things perhaps get forgotten or assumed? As I say, not complaining, they were all great, kind, efficient and on time. Thank you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share feedback about your recent experience of having an MRI at our hospital. We are pleased to hear that staff were kind and your appointment was on time. We are sorry to hear that the communication about what to expect with the process of having the MRI scan itself was not completely clear, and will share your feedback with the radiography team so that learning can be taken from your experience. Your feedback is really helpful and greatly appreciated, thank you. Wishing you all the best with any ongoing care.
