  1. Review titled I felt my needs as a carer totally disregarded

by Ignored Carer - Posted on 02 June 2023

My mother was admitted to William Harvey Hospital after a TIA / vertigo attack. Whilst there, she developed hospital delirium due to lack of sleep on the ward. Care was OK but the staff hadn’t noticed she is partially sighted and had lost sight. We were asked to bring in her drugs, which we did, but these were left on the top of the locker in the open ward. Staff going in there to retrieve drugs. With dementia patients on the ward, how was this allowed? I was informed that covid was on the ward once I sat down with my mother and my husband, who has motor neurone disease. Being extremely vulnerable himself we therefore couldn’t stay long. I had no conversation with any member of staff about mum’s discharge (not one). I wasn’t considered nor asked what my mum can do with and without help. I wasn’t asked what my caring role for mum was. It’s obvious she isn’t looking after herself, so I would have like to be informed. Under Discharge to Access I should have been. When asked if my mum would be tested for covid before she was returned to my care, I was told no, not unless she was symptomatic - ie a cough. So despite her being in a ward with covid and despite her having cold symptoms, she was returned to my care with my husband, who is extremely vulnerable in terms of covid, without a test. Of course she has covid and therefore I as her carer cannot support her as I can’t bring covid back to my husband. But what is worse than this was the rude way I was spoken to by the ward manager when I asked about it, how I was spoken to when I asked for a discharge plan and how when we arrived when I said I would to collect her, I was told I was early and the EDN (which we still haven’t received by post) was not ready. This was because, and forgive me if you understand the disabled parking issues at the William Harvey Hospital, staff would appreciate that someone with MND and an electrolyte mother who is unable to walk distances needed a disabled parking space which could not be guaranteed at 2 pm during visiting hours. So all in all I felt my needs as a carer totally disregarded. As a partner provider who is facilitating discharge and the availability of a bed on the ward, I’m distressed that my needs were not considered. The NHS has a NHSThinkCarer programme, which it seems as though the East Kent Hospital Trust do not follow or train their staff in.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. I am so sorry to read of your awful experience in relation to your Mother's care and the way you felt you was spoken to. This is not the experience we want anyone to have and your experience certainly does not reflect the values we expect our staff to adhere to. I can appreciate and empathize with how you felt and can only imagine how difficult it is caring for your Mother whilst also dealing with your Husband's MND. If you would like us to look into what happened, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on tel: 01227 783145 or email: ekh-tr.pals@nhs.net. PALS are open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm, except bank holidays. If you phone and get the voicemail please leave a message and the team will get back to you. Best Wishes

  2. Review titled Excellent service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

    by Michelle h - Posted on 08 May 2023

My visit to A&E at WHH was painless, efficient and thorough. The staff on night shift on Sun May 7th were all very pleasant and professional, waiting time to see doctor was quick and getting the treatment needed very quick. I was glad too see the lady with coffee and biscuits on her trolley, a much needed boost in the early hours. Thankyou

  4. Review titled 32 hours and still waiting for a bed

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 19 May 2023

Currently waiting in major assessment area for a bed. I've been waiting 32hrs, another two men have been here 48hrs. All of us have major health issues. Elderly left in wheelchairs for well over 8 hours. Utterly exhausted, and a complete nonsense that there are no beds.

I am very sorry to hear you've had such a long wait for a bed, after being in A&E. We continue to experience huge pressure due the the volume of very unwell people attending A&E and we have to regularly care for patients in escalation areas whilst we wait for a bed to become available on a ward. We do prioritise patients who are at highest risk, and do our utmost to care for everyone and keep them safe. If you would like us to look into any aspect of your care or treatment please do contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on tel: 01227 783145 or email: ekh-tr.pals@nhs.net. 5. Review titled Very poor communication and hospital hygiene

    by syste-matic - Posted on 05 April 2023

I visited paediatric A&E in WHH with my son due to his high blood pressure. Firstly we went to pediatric A&E and they have done all basic tests and then we were sent to see GP out of hours. The GP sent us back to pediatric A&E due to concerns my son had high blood pressure. Already there was very poor communication between out of hours GP and paediatric A&E as no results or communication passed between each other in a timely way. The waiting rooms are ever so filthy. I am a communist child and the hospitals in Easter Europe are cleaner then in WHH. Then we were taken Blood tests and sent to x-ray and told to go home and then if no one calls us to then call Padua ward and ask for the results and another blood pressure test would be done. 48 hours since we first came home and no one has bothered to communicate. I rang Padua ward twice and the second time I found the nurse quite rude, asking why I am calling and continuously interrupted the conversation rather than listening. If they are a professional then they should be compassionate and sound professionally. They sounded very fed up. I am working within social service and we are all busy but maintain my professionalism at all times. If this nurse feels fed up with her profession then they should leave. I will think 10 times before visiting this hospital. It feels that want they want people to go somewhere else and not being bothered. This hospital is like 100 years behind the ape age.

I am very sorry to hear about the recent experience you had when attending the UTC / A&E at William Harvey with your son and when you contacted Padua ward. You raise a number of issues and I'll need to contact the relevant managers to ask for their response. They may require some additional details and therefore if you could please email our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) they will be able to assist you to get a more detailed response. Please email: ekh-tr.pals@nhs.net I hope your son is better, but would encourage you to contact NHS 111 or your GP should you remain concerned. They will advise you on whether to attend A&E or the UTC again. Best wishes.

  6. Review titled Thorough, professional and compassionate

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Deborah A Chalmers - Posted on 16 April 2023

Acute Medical Unit My father and family travelled from Scotland to visit family when my 79 year old father became seriously unwell with heart and stomach issues. He has many ailments including dementia that further complicated this. The care, compassion and professionalism from every member of staff there, is like nothing we have experienced before. Don't get me wrong all our NHS dealings have been good but this was truly above and beyond and not just with my father. I can not praise them enough. The care at the Acute Medical Unit was even more impressive. We were deeply concerned about how my father would cope in unfamiliar surroundings but he actually was so settled by the individuals working in the unit. That unit is the busiest I have ever seen in a hospital and there was some very colourful characters to test saints let me tell you but everyone was treated the same. Thank you from the Chalmers family for all that you did for our precious father John.

  7. Review titled Good service

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Brenda Crane - Posted on 29 April 2023

Following a visit to my doctor she sent me straight the hospital for a ct scan querying a stroke. I spent 6 hours at the hospital but during this time I was seen by 3 doctors, had an ecg, blood pressure checks and a ct scan. The department was very busy but I was very impressed with the treatment I received. At a time when the NHS is being critiscised I would like to say a big thank you to all concerned with my treatment.

  8. Review titled Busy but still well looked after.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 07 April 2023

I went in for Sinus surgery and a polyp removal from one of my nostrils as a Day patient in the Channel Day area. Every person I dealt with was pleasant, very helpful and most very all smiles. Although it was very busy as it seemed to have multiple departments meeting there at the same time, we all seemed to be given the same level of care. After the operation, I was cared for very well and although I was late leaving, because my prescription needed changing slightly, the nurses and doctors were as quick as they could be about it as they knew I was desperate to go home and get some sleep. All in all, we know the NHS is busy, but I have so far have never had any issues, and I thank them again for their help with me this time.
