I visited the SDEC rolling a referral from my GP. I have never been to a department so well organised and efficient. An example to the rest on the NHS, truly a perfect role model. Thank you

Review titled An angel in respiratory reception
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by G. Gibson - Posted on 08 May 2024
Today 8.5.24 I arrived at the respiratory clinic only to find out it had been cancelled at short notice i.e 5hrs. before, and I wasn't made aware. I arrived in extreme pain following a diagnoses of a slipped disc only the day before and am awaiting ASAP surgery. I was treated well and with full apology, firstly by a young man who had been rearranging the said clinic. Plus, my bonus. The young lady behind the desk got a wheelchair for me, and pushed me all the way back to my car. I received generosity from both of them, they made the day better. I'm sorry that I am unable to name them, they deserve it, lost in a sea of hopelessness....

Cancelled Appointment & Staff Attitude Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback on the NHS website. We are sorry that your appointment was cancelled at short notice, and you did not find out until you attended the hospital for your appointment, which must have been very frustrating. I am pleased to read from your comments that the staff on duty supported you with re-arranging your appointment and with the provision of a wheelchair and that the member of staff pushed you back to your car. Your feedback has been shared with the Outpatient Department, and the Department Manager will be sharing your feedback with all the team. Richard Medway Involvement and Engagement Officer

Review titled Lovely staff but woefully inefficient systems
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Rebeccah Wadeson - Posted on 23 May 2024
A and E had run out of codeine to prescribe following having a broken wrist manoeuvred and cast. I waited almost 4 hours on ward f9 for pharmacy to prescribe 30mg codeine and laxatives post surgery. Surely low dose, commonly used medication could be kept securely in the ward. What a waste of bed space and time.

Dear Rebeccah, Thank you for your feedback. We were sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would hope in Wythenshawe Hospital Emergency Department. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as it provides an opportunity for the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible. Wythenshawe Emergency Department has investigated your concerns and found that the delay on the date you attended was due to the department running out of over-labelled boxes of codeine for “Take Out” medication, which are those that can be dispensed from the ward or department. There was, however, sufficient stock in the department to manage patients’ pain. This falls below the standard we expect to meet, and we are sorry for the additional distress this caused you at an already stressful time. Wythenshawe Emergency Department is reviewing processes in collaboration with the Pharmacy Department to ensure others don’t experience the same issues as you did. We apologise that on this occasion we were unable to provide you with the level of care expected and we hope that your wrist is recovering well. It can often be difficult to respond to all posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information so if you would like to discuss your experience with us in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact Hannah Wainwright, Emergency Department Matron at Hannah.wainwright@mft.nhs.uk or our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@mft.nhs.uk quoting reference number PO23/0164. a9 ward seem incapable of answering the phone. 28 times trying and still not answering. When information is needed about a patient, and calling from abroad, it’s diabolical that nobody picks the phone up!

Dear Patient, Thank you for taking the time to share your comments. We are sorry to learn of your unsatisfactory experience when trying to contact Ward A9, Opal Assessment Unit (OAU). The Trust strives to provide patients with effective communication, and we are sorry that we did not achieve this for you on this occasion. Your feedback has been shared with Ms. Alison Coy, Matron for Complex Health. Ms. Coy was sorry to hear of your difficulties of reaching the ward by telephone and recognises how frustrating this must have been for you. The reception desk on OAU is open and staffed by a ward clerk from 08:00 hours – 16:00hours, Monday to Friday, however due to clinical commitments the staff are not always immediately available to answer the phone. The Trust aims to make the ward accessible as possible to all its service users and Ms Coy is sorry this was not your experience. Ms Coy has confirmed that all staff have been reminded of the importance of answering calls in a timely manner. Richard Medway Involvement and Engagement Officer

Review titled Heartfelt Thanks and indebted Gratitude
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Kevin McCarthy - Posted on 27 April 2024
My son was taken into the ICU unit at Wythenshawe after a major bleed to his brain. The nurses and consulting team were honest and forthright about his chances. He was treated with dignity and respect at all times and the extra touches were unbelievable. the nurses laughed and cried along with us as a family and it felt like we were surrounded by an extention of our family. In particular I have to mention The first nurse who looked after him a guy with unbelievable strength of character, who was our sons gaurdian for his first two very important days on the ward he promised only truth and was steadfast in his treatment of my son and my family. and of course the lovelynurse who stayed by his and our sides on the day of his passing and grieved alongside my wife like only a mother could(thank you). there were many others there who shared the hard times with us and we truly admire you all. My family want you all to know that we marvel at the job you do and are so very very grateful for you all. and finally a mention to the donor team. We have seen first hand how difficult your job is and also admire your strength and humility when dealing with families. again Thank you.

Review titled Amazing C section team
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Mr Nathan L Cassidy - Posted on 28 April 2024
My wife had a c section at wythenshawe and was worried about the entire experience. The staff that handled her c section were fantastic, from getting her ready to performing the surgery and the aftercare following. The whole team were compassionate, professional and efficient whilst making sure my wife was ok. A massive thank you to the anaesthesiologist (this review wont allow me to put names but i hope she knows who this is) Her approach to healthcare is very admirable and the way she kept my wife at ease throughout was amazing. As someone who was terrified about the c section procedure myself, I would absolutely recommend to others not to be worried in the hands of the people that handled my wifes case. Thank you all so much.

Review titled Excellent care
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Anna - Posted on 22 April 2024
I am having surgery tomorrow for a missed miscarriage and had my pre op appointment. I was seen immediately to have blood pressure and bloods taken & the person who took them was very friendly and efficient - I told them it was the best blood taking I'd had as I'd hardly felt it and it was over quickly. The person I saw for my pre-op appointment was also very friendly, empathetic and professional. They ensured I had any questions answered and offered good advice. Had more bloods drawn again & this was also painless. Forgot to add that after the first lot of bloods was drawn I waited in EGU triage and everyone was being seen very quickly - I was taken to my pre op appointment within 10 mins. Thanks for making a sad time easier.

Review titled Kind staff
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Anna - Posted on 24 April 2024
Returned yesterday for surgical management of a missed miscarriage. As in my pre op appointment, all staff were incredible. The anesthetist who spoke to me first on the day ward was very friendly. The nurse looking after me in the day ward before & after surgery was also kind, friendly and helpful. The porters who took me to surgery in a wheelchair made sure I was comfortable with a pillow and blanket and were friendly on the journey. I had to wait for a bit in another room before surgery & began to feel uncomfortable due to the mild period pain from a pill I needed to take pre surgery mixed with hunger since you can't eat the day of surgery. I got a bit teary because of that & nerves for surgery as I'd never had GA before. Someone came & sat with me, gave me a tissue, drew a curtain for privacy & was very kind, empathetic & reassuring (they may have been a nurse but I'm not sure). They followed up with the doctor to see when I'd be going in for surgery & the doctor came to chat with me & apologise for the wait & validated my feelings with kindness too. Once in the theater everyone preparing me for surgery including the anesthetist were very warm, friendly & funny making me feel more relaxed. Post surgery everyone I interacted with were friendly & even got me a booklet to read on request when I was getting bored waiting to be returned to the day ward. Back in the ward the nurse again was very helpful & had good bedside manner, talking me through each step & keeping me updated on when I'd be able to go home. The tea & toast was delivered quickly & was tasty too!
