  1. Review titled Childrens A&E & Starlight Ward

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Rebecca Mcwilliam - Posted on 09 July 2023

My review is about childrens A&E and the Starlight children’s day ward. Took my 6 year old son in yesterday afternoon after he took a turn for the worse three days into a tummy bug. It was very busy when we got there but we were seen swiftly as they could see that he was not very responsive. They acted quickly to get get him on a IV and test all his vital signs. From the moment we got there the doctors and all the nurses and staff were wonderful. Caring, compassionate, professional, explained everything and did their best to put us at ease. Everyone who saw us is an absolute credit to the NHS and Wythenshawe hospital. After some time in A&E they admitted him to the children’s ward for further monitoring. We saw three doctors in all and numerous nurses and each one in both departments made us feel like a priority. We have had to take our son to A&E at Wythenshawe, 3-4 times over the last 6 years and every time they have been absolutely amazing. Thank you

The A&E were excellent in treating my 93 old father after a fall. Respectful and professional throughout. Like all A&Es it needs more resources to meet demand, but kudos to the team there for a great service.

  3. Review titled Great practice

I attended the department for day surgery on 2 basal cell carcinomas, arriving at 8 a.m and being ready to leave by 11.30 a.m. All the staff, from the admissions nurse to the theatre team were exceptionally warm, friendly and professional, and made me feel relaxed and cared for. I was apprehensive about the surgery but was reassured and given clear information at every stage about what would happen. The staff made me comfortable before, during and after surgery with warmed blankets, extra pillows and lots of tea and biscuits. Thank you to a genuinely kind and skillful team.

The doctor was pleasant, thorough, saw the wider context and had a good sense of humour. I would like to thank her in particular for my good experience this morning.

  5. Review titled First class care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

My husband was taken ill at Manchester Airport and was taken by ambulance to your hospital. He was seen quickly in the Emergency Department and detailed information about his condition and the tests/treatment he needed was given to both him and family members who were with him. He was later transferred to the Acute Medical Receiving Unit and discharged the following day. All staff we met were highly professional and helpful and did their best to put our minds at ease at what was a very worrying time. We couldn't fault the way they cared for my husband. You have a fantastic hospital and staff and we are very grateful to you for making his stay as comfortable as possible and ensuring that we, his family, had as much information as we needed to reduce our anxiety. Thank you.

  6. Review titled Outpatients Checkup

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Mary Bullough - Posted on 20 August 2023

I had an accident in the grounds of Withenshawe and broke my hip. After being in A&E for 4 hours, in dreadful pain, I was admitted. I was operated on the next day. I have no complaints about the care in hospital although they were short staffed. I was in bed without getting up for 6 days and then 7 days getting up and learning how to get about. I didn’t receive a letter for a checkup. My doctor suggested I ring the surgeon’s secretary and ask for an appointment, which I did. When I arrived for my appointment the waiting room was pretty full and more patients arrived after me. When there was no one else left I was called in. It was obvious from the doctor’s attitude that I had been left until last deliberately. The reason being that I has made my own appointment! He said that not everyone needs a checkup. I’m 78 years old and just needed someone to check me over and make sure everything was ok. I think everyone should have a follow on appointment after surgery. It’s not too much to ask surely after major surgery! I was very disappointed, upset but also annoyed with his attitude.

Thank you for your feedback via the NHS / Care Opinion website. We were sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would hope at Wythenshawe Hospital. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity to make changes and improvements wherever possible. In response to your comment, patients should receive an appointment for a follow up with the doctor and I am sorry that you didn’t receive a letter and had to chase this up yourself. Due to a change in the way we request outpatient follow up appointments, we have noticed that there have been some delays and missed appointments, we apologise that you have been affected by this. We have received further training and support to avoid this happening again. In respect to the doctor’s attitude, as a Trust we expect all our staff to always act in a professional manner; I apologise if this has not been the case. Should you remain dissatisfied and wish to discuss your experience further, please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) at your earliest opportunity on telephone 0161 276 8686, or email pals@mft.nhs.uk, quoting reference number PO23/0088, and they will do their best to address your concerns.

  7. Review titled Excellent care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Ian Whitehead - Posted on 04 July 2023

I had a heart attack on the 28 June 2023. I had 2 stents inserted. The operating staff were superb and probably saved my life. Also the aftercare on the coronary care unit and f2 ward at Wythenshawe hospital were again superb. I cannot praise all these departments more for their professionalism and compassion during my stay there. Thank you so much.

  8. Review titled Amazing team and support for heart attack

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Mark Watkins - Posted on 14 June 2023

I had a heart attack on Sunday night. I drove to Whythenshaw hospital in the early hours of Monday (yeah stupid I know, but I hoped it will take my mind off the discomfort!) and I was seen immediately by triage and was on a bed within two minutes. Lots of tests later and I had an angiogram and a stent fitted on Monday afternoon. They discharged me on Tuesday. From the moment I arrived until I was discharged everyone was absolutely amazing. A&E, CCU all nurses and support staff. I’ve never left a health service review before but had to. Cannot thank them enough.

  9. Review titled Outstanding care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Tracey Pook - Posted on 11 June 2023

I was taken to Wythenshawe A&E by ambulance yesterday due to a fall i had. Within 30 minutes i had been booked in and xrays done. I had fractured my foot in 2 places. From my admittance to home was under 4 hours. The efficiency and care was outstanding. I honestly, expected a very long wait and a lot of frustration. Well done and a massive thank you to the staff. We know the NHS are overstretched, undervalued and under paid, however the staff at A&E gave such great patient care. Again, thank you so much!!!!!!

  10. Review titled Excellent care and service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Berny Burke - Posted on 10 July 2023

My brother and I took my sister to a&e on Saturday 20th June. We arrived at 15.40. The message board displayed a 4 hour wait time. By 16.00 she was triaged and had bloods taken. Then about an hour later she saw a doctor and was taken for an xray. We left after an assessment and treatment about 21.00 and with a follow up appointment for the next day, Sunday, for an ultrasound in Sdec. On Sunday, she got the ultrasound plus a cat scan and discharged after assessments and consultations with Manchester Royal Infirmary and orthopaedics. My brother and I had to leave for the airport as we were visiting from Ireland. The care and attention my sister received was outstanding. The a&e was the most calm and clean a&e I have ever experienced. The wait times were communicated and short compared to what we are used to. All the staff - nurses, doctors, admin and porters - were very friendly and pleasant with endless patience. While in Sdec we were offered and served very welcome refreshments by a pleasant smiley man and we gratefully accepted the service on two occasions. This all took place on a weekend during a junior doctors strike. I cannot commend the nhs and Wythenshawe Hospital enough and have told many friends since arriving home. Most ask me if I was sure we were in a public hospital and not a private one! I want to thank all the staff who made our time as pleasant as it could possibly be under stressful circumstances and to let you know that you make a difference. The nhs are lucky to have people like you working for them. I cannot thank you enough.
