  1. Review titled So glad i walked through those doors - finally

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 26 May 2023

Ive been with cgl since around oct nov 22. I was reluctant for years for many reasons. I need not have been. I am wary of ppl through many neg exp in life and traumas, it put me off people. All i can say 6 month on, is i have met some of the most brilliant ppl via cgl. Connection i feel is the opposite of addiction, and i have found what i was trying to find via cgl. The day programs are excellent, the staff i know are brilliant, the service users in the groups are great. Found some really good ppl now friends there, all on same pageish, support each other if and when, and i havent laughed so much in a long time. Thank you all immensely

  2. Review titled My recovery from addiction

by Reanne - Posted on 20 April 2023

Over a thirty-year period, my addiction took me to some terrifying places. Addiction gave me injuries, illnesses, humiliation and a constant feeling of uneasiness. By the end, I was trapped in a never-ending Groundhog Day, isolated and in fear of everything and everyone. I was so ill that I became petrified that I would die, but at the same time, I didn’t want to live anymore. I have completed several detoxes over the years, many that I have had to beg for, but have always ended up relapsing again and again. I couldn’t break the cycle. My situation was hopeless. After my last relapse, I went into a private rehab for a month. While in there, I communicated with CGL workers. I now understood that a detox and a few weeks away was not going to be sufficient if I was to hold on to my sobriety. Something needed to change. CGL assured me that they were setting me up on their Day Programme, which I could access as soon as I left the rehab. They also told me about their Anxiety group, which I started remotely while in the treatment centre, and about their Creative group. When I entered the rehab, I had been too afraid to speak to anyone. The Day Programme would involve daily groups where I would be expected to engage. Although I was fearful, I knew that the uncomfortable feelings I had around this had to be put aside if I was to have any kind of sober future. On leaving the rehab, I started the daily groups. I had already begun to build a trusting relationship with the staff and this helped me with my confidence. I went from having a chaotic lifestyle to have a daily routine where I would be expected to show up and be accountable. As well as developing my own skills to avoid relapse, I also learnt about the value of helping other addicts with their recovery. Finally, I started to believe that sobriety did not need to be a temporary thing and that it was something that could be a possibility for me long-term. I began attending 12 step meetings and found a sponsor to support me. I would look forward to and contribute to the groups. My self-esteem started to grow. I enjoyed the trips out we had at Cannon Hill Park and to the city centre during the Commonwealth Games. I got to meet people in person and learnt to have a good time without mind-altering substances. I felt closer to the staff and the group members as a result. I realised that other people could like me for who I am and I made friends. The Anxiety group equipped me with techniques, which I still use in situations today when things become stressful. The Creative writing group showed me that I could actually be good at something. Since leaving the Day Programme, I have a much more positive outlook on life. I have been invited to CGL South hub to share my experiences about the 12 steps and recovery, to the women’s group to talk to clients and to the 168 groups. Talking to groups of strangers would not have been possible a year ago. Now, at almost a year free of all mind-altering substances, I am eternally grateful to the staff who believed in me and who continue to believe in me.

    Review titled Change Grow Live

    Replied on 02 May 2023

Dear Reanne Thank you so much for getting in touch to share your story. I'm Lydia and I work within the team at Change Grow Live Birmingham that is responsible for listening to people's feedback. Apologies that it's taken me a little while to get back to you. I can't even begin to imagine how you must have felt, spending all those years trapped in your addiction. It sounds like it must have been very difficult for you to have ever believed you would find a way out, and from reading your words I can completely understand why your situation felt hopeless. I'm so glad that you were able to get support from our Day Programme following your stay in a private rehab, and I think it's absolutely brilliant that the private rehab allowed and supported you to engage in our anxiety group whilst you were there. I can appreciate how this would have helped you to build connections and trust with our staff, and make your transition into our Day Programme a little less daunting. It's amazing to hear how much you benefitted from the support and structure that was on offer, which I'm conscious only became a reality due to your willingness to push through your uncomfortable feelings about engaging in groups. It would have been so easy for you to have discounted the offer of our Day Programme through your fears, and I'm so glad you found the strength to overcome them. I hope you feel incredibly proud of everything you have achieved as it sounds like you've made some absolutely astonishing changes in your life, which have not only helped you to move forwards, but have also enabled you to give back to others. It's so important that people who are struggling with addiction get to meet and hear from people like your good self, so that they too can start believing recovery is possible. I have no doubt that the hope and inspiration you can offer through sharing your experiences and knowledge, will have the power to help many other people who are struggling. I will make sure that all of the staff who are connected to the support groups you've mentioned get to read your feedback. As well as feeling honoured to have been part of your journey, I'm sure they will also feel proud that they have helped you to get to where you are today. Stay strong, positive and determined and thanks again for getting in touch with us. I wish you all the very best for your future and continued recovery. Take care, Lydia

  4. Review titled Time to reflect, contemplate, relax

    by Paul 55 - Posted on 10 March 2023

I requested referral to detox through CGL and due to a recently diagnosed heart condition it was determined that residential, medically supervised detox was the appropriate solution. The Dame Carol Black centre was proposed mid 2022. I had pretty much given up on it ever happening after many months of delay without any real explanation, but then out of the blue a place became available at two days notice. I couldn't attend due to jury service, but fortunately another place became available very quickly. On arrival the welcome was fantastic. The facilities are excellent and the staff are all exceptional. The whole ethos that pervades from top down and throughout is positive and surely has a positive impact upon clients. I have now come through detox without any problems or issues and thinking positively about the future without alcohol as a primary focus. I was apprehensive about spending 12 days with a bunch of strangers, but am surprised to have made some really strong friendships. This detox provides a time to reflect / contemplate and relax and constant daytime tv and shoot up action films constantly blaring is a real unwelcome distraction so perhaps some curfew or at least consensus would be helpful to many. It would also have been helpful to have the handbook sent in advance because it contains a lot of pre-visit information that I didn't see until I arrived (not sure whether CGL should have sent it, but no-one did). All in all though I would strongly recommend to anyone.

  5. Review titled Has had a really positive impact for me

    by encryptionyw85 - Posted on 23 March 2023

Walking into a group for the first time seems daunting but once I realised we were all doing it to make a better life for ourselves it became much less worrying and over time even became enjoyable. People with similar problems sharing experiences and supporting each other in recovery has had a really positive impact for me, talking about problems and sharing coping ideas has been invaluable at crossing the addiction “swamp”

  6. Review titled Positive experience

    by jazzhk34 - Posted on 01 March 2023

I wanted to share my thoughts on the service I received from the substance misuse service S2S Kettering . Firstly, I had some concerns about my situation, but the staff were really helpful in reassuring me that everything would be okay. They also followed up with me regularly to make sure I was doing well. I appreciated that they were able to visit me in my home, which made things much more convenient for me. I found everyone I dealt with to be friendly and supportive. They were patient with me when I needed help and answered all my questions in a way I could understand. I never felt judged or embarrassed about my situation, which made me feel more comfortable and confident in seeking help. Overall, my experience with the substance misuse service was positive. The staff were professional, kind, and helpful. I didn't face any major challenges or barriers in accessing the service, and the few minor issues I had were quickly resolved. I am grateful for the help I received and would definitely recommend this service to anyone who needs it." [Unsure about 'Staff attitude'] [Unsure about 'Staff skills'] [Unsure about 'Team work']

  8. Review titled The staff go 100%

    by Jadefx23 - Posted on 21 February 2023

I have received the most excellent care whilst being a service user at inspire, The service provides so many options to ensure the best chance of recovery that is tailored to each individual that accesses services. The staff go 100% above and beyond for the people they work for, and you can see that they take such pride in the job it's an inspiration for service users. I would say there could be more resources for neuro diverse people like sensory toys as well as having prompt cards for people who are hearing impaired and extra support for dyslexic/illiterate people. This service has been a lifesaver for so many and I'm a grateful for the staff, service and support I've been freely given

  9. Review titled Treating me right

    by romeotk96 - Posted on 01 March 2023

I am treated as a human and not another number. Most of the time I feel like a marble being thrown around a shoe box. At S2S Kettering I feel listened to and heard. It's great for the first time to feel heard and understood, rather than being treated solely as a problem to be solved. I am lonely a lot of the time but the groups make me feel less so.

  10. Review titled Alcohol Detoxification experience

    by ariesgd49 - Posted on 15 March 2023

So in March 2023 I was referred for alcohol detox by CGL Brighton following a self-referral approximately 14 months prior. I was originally due to do a home detox in August 2022 but at the last minute this was switched to an inpatient detox due to concerns about the health of my liver following an ultrasound that showed some issues that needed to be closely monitored. At the time I was quite disappointment by this decision as I wanted to proceed with the detox as soon as possible but unfortunately had to wait a further 6 months for an admission date. Since being here I have found all of the staff to be very kind and informative and I also found the other inpatients to be very welcoming and friendly. Medication was administered at regular intervals and all of my questions were answered by the staff to the best of their abilities. The food provided was excellent if I was to give any criticism of that it was that choice was limited to one or possibly 2 options however the quality was not in doubt. I think at times there could have been slightly better communication between CGL and Dame Carol for example CGL arranged for my discharge transport to be provided on a date when no discharge was available. Overall I would say the experience was excellent and my only main source of concern was that the mattress' provided did not suit a painful back condition that would interrupt my sleep more than I felt was necessary, however I accept this may be due to my specific medical needs and I do not know if other inpatients suffered with the same issue. Other than some minor technical issues that were quickly resolved I would say my overall experience was excellent and I would very much like to thank all of the staff for their kind and considerate manner and would recommend the facility to anyone who in genuinely seeking help to better themselves regardless of the specific nature of their addiction or addictions.

Dear Aries gd49 Thank you for taking the time to post an update about your experiences of working with CGL B&H. I am very happy to hear that your experiences were positive and that your recovery is continuing to travel in the right direction. Our staff at CGL really value this kind of feedback and I will make sure it is shared with the team. I note some of your comments around the food choice, and the mattress and will feed those comments back to DCB for further consideration. Wishing you all the very best CGL Brighton team.
