  1. Review titled Helping a Friend

    by Ro2023 - Posted on 28 February 2023

I am currently trying to support my friend through their alcohol issues. I travel all the way from Manchester to ensure they attend their appointment at Matrix House in Chorley. Unfortunately the nurse there decided to speak about me in a negative light to my friend and their partner, they said- I know nothing about alcohol abuse. This is because I’ve tried to get my mate not to drink as much alcohol when they don’t need it. There is a big difference between needing alcohol and taking it just because it’s easy to get to i.e. walking past a shop buying two miniature Vodka or drinking too extreme levels when they haven't developed any shakes which was the advice that was given to try and slowly reduce drinking when they feel like they are getting the shakes then have a drink. For a nurse to speak about me in a negative light is disgraceful what right does a nurse have to criticise me when I’m trying to do my best by my friend. I’m not trying to get them to stop drinking alcohol because one in five alcoholics die when they try and go cold turkey. The truth is my friend has been drinking to extreme levels and they have not really listened to the advice that was given to them. They think that they are going to rehab anyway so we may as well damage their body further than trying to say to them no you need to try and take the advice that you’re given now so that it reduces your issues are further health issues. Like I said I’m really disappointed that I’m being spoken about a negative light when am trying to do my best for somebody. And I do know about substance misuse and alcohol misuse because I have been in homeless hostels and seen people struggling with dealing with their alcohol issues I’ve seen people being put in private ambulances because they haven’t been listening to advise given. I am not saying that the nurse is not doing their job properly I am merely saying that I should not be criticised when the full facts of what I’m trying to say I’m not being established or understood because of this now I will not be attending matrix house with my friend because I don’t like judgement or people stereotyping my views as a person.

  2. Review titled Stop smoking support

by Forestheat - Posted on 27 April 2023

Joined the no smoking course gypsyville hull after emphysema diagnosis - I needed to stop smoking. I met the lady who runs the no smoking course, was told what help was available to me and went ahead with the use of patches and Nicorette inhalators . The lady who I saw was very helpful in all aspects of the course I was doing to stop smoking. I have not had a cigarette in six weeks now. I know it’s hard to stop smoking but with the kind of help I’ve received it’s been much easier to stop. I wanted to stop smoking long before my emphysema diagnosis unfortunately it’s only after that diagnosis I knew I had to stop . I would urge anyone wanting to try to stop smoking to give it a try, don’t be like me, stop before you get a diagnosis you don’t want . I actually feel better, my clothes not smelling of smoke anymore. If people want to smoke that’s up to them, I'm not here to say you must stop, we all make our own choices in life .

  7. Review titled Help in stopping smoking

    by will21 - Posted on 08 August 2023

I have been a smoker on and off most of my life, and have been able to stop numerous times, using willpower alone. As I grew older it became much more difficult to stop, like lots of smokers I made excuses to myself when I failed to stop. It was a big decision for a confident person to ask for help in stopping, but that was exactly what I did. I'm a year in ,with no thoughts whatsoever of starting again, the asking for help was the key in my case.

  8. Review titled Support on my journey

by recoveryjourney - Posted on 07 October 2022

I have been attending CGL now for two and a half years. I have felt very supported during my time coming here. The staff are very knowledgeable through their own personal experiences on providing the tools to support you on your journey to recovery. It has not been an easy ride but the care and compassion I have from everyone here at CGL has most definitely helped me still be here today.

  9. Review titled CGL saved my life

by Springerstaff - Posted on 26 January 2023

Due to various issues in my life I became dependent on alcohol. I had attempted to stop drinking on occasions but it was very half hearted. I was lying to myself and everyone around me. By chance I was made aware of CGL. I was very reluctant to refer myself to them. My Wife did it for me. She had had enough. My recovery with CGL was delayed due to my son being involved in a very serious accident which put him in a coma for three months. However I attended a couple of meetings with a keyworker and nurse and my recovery was set for October 10. I was to attend a Two week detox at the North Hub. I took a ‘last’ drink just before 9 o’clock the night before. The days before I started CGL my symptoms were severe. Anxiety and depression. Not eating. Constantly being sick. Not interested in anything.Constant heaving. No sleep. Trembling and profusely sweating and shaking.I was a mess. On day one I was welcomed by two of the friendliest and most wonderful nurses. I was breathalysed and had my blood pressure taken. I answered some questions. I was then taken to the classroom. There were four of us in attendance. I could easily have walked out that first day. Why was I here? What was the point of sitting here all day? I don’t know how much I took in on day one. But I do remember learning something really important. If you look after number one (yourself) then you can start looking after those around you. Before I left I was once again breathalysed and checked over. I took the tablets I had been given that day on the evening and chose not to drink. I had gone one day without a drink. The following days followed the same pattern. Each day we learned something new. I was now understanding addiction. It was beginning to make sense. My peers were now my friends (and still are). We were all in the same boat. My Tutor was in recovery. We were all in it together. By understanding my addiction I was now understanding the solution to it. We all graduated on that last day. We were all sad that our detox programme had ended. It was on to the day programme. The day programme was between 4 to 12 weeks. I ran the full course. Not perhaps out of necessity but I learned to realise the importance of connections. ( connection is the opposite to addiction). By talking to your peers you pick up so much useful information. I watched people grow on the day programme. Someone could come on for the first time in a darkened room hardly speaking and six weeks later they would hardly shut up. To watch this is so inspiring. People would be patting each other on the back one minute then rallying around to pick someone up off the floor another time. To listen to people’s success stories can only motivate you to carry on. Everything about the day programme was positive. I looked forward to it. The learning from the detox programme continued. From the Get Connected Stay Connected sessions I went on day conferences on two occasions meeting people from other Hubs and people from the day programme. I did the Cannon Hill park walk on a couple of occasions. Again meeting people off the day programme for the first time. I had a weeks day course with Intuitive Thinking which I was put forward for by CGL. It was fantastic. I learned how my Brain is working and thinking whilst I’m addicted. I still use the Tools I learned. To summarise, CGL saved my life. Today I would not be here without their support. I was a danger to myself and others. For example falling over on a major road whilst attempting to cross it. Smashing up my bike (and myself). Being walked home by two unfortunate homeless people. I was a seizure waiting to happen. I could go on. This is why I have no hesitation in saying that CGL saved my life. I realised within a week of detox that my health was improving. I began eating again. Within two weeks I was interested again. I had my haircut for the first time in weeks. My family were starting to praise me. My life was becoming ‘normal’. During the course of the day programme I started taking pride in myself again. My motivation to do things came back to me. My biggest change is I’ve got my honesty back. The worse thing with addiction is the lies and deceit. I have deliberately not named anyone in my story. That’s because in my experience everyone at CGL does a top rate fantastic job and it would be unfair to mention anyone by name. Even when I walked around the North Hub, people from CGL whom I didn’t know or have dealings with would ask me how I was getting on. No one judges you. You just feel at home. As I write this I am now 108 days without a drink. For the first time in fifteen years my blood pressure is normal. I have my life and my family back. CGL thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Dear Springerstaff Thank you for getting in touch with us. I’m Simon, the Services Manager at our North Hub in Birmingham and I’m part of the team that monitors the feedback that comes in about our support. I’m sorry to hear about how badly your alcohol dependency was affecting you, both physically and psychologically. I can only imagine how tough that must have been for you and the people around you. I’m really glad that your wife helped you to get the support you needed, as it sounds like it was the starting point to all the amazing progress and changes you have made since. I was so glad to read about the way you were treated by our staff here. Addiction does not discriminate and can happen to anybody. Anyone who is affected by addiction deserves to be treated with respect, compassion and without judgement and it makes me feel extremely proud of our staff, to learn that you felt at home in our service. I will make sure the whole team in our North Hub get to read about your experiences and I’m sure everyone will feel as equally as proud as I do. I hope you feel proud of yourself too, for having such an open mind and showing so much determination to get through your detox and graduate and then go onto engage in our day programme. It’s also great to hear that you were referred into the Intuitive Thinking course and that this helped you to understand the way that you can change your thinking. It sounds like you’ve made lots of positive connections with other people who were using our support too. Peer support is such an important part of recovery so I’m really glad our groups provided you with an opportunity to make new friends and meet supportive and understanding people. Congratulations on all of those days of abstinence you have achieved, which I’m sure will turn into many months and years if you continue to show the level of commitment you have shown to your recovery so far. It’s amazing to hear how well supported you felt by our service, but I hope you will always acknowledge that nothing would have changed if you hadn’t have met the challenge of recovery with the right attitude and motivation. It sounds like you have worked extremely hard and you deserve every good thing that has come your way as a result. Thanks so much again for sharing your experience with us. I found the words you shared about your journey into recovery inspiring. I hope other people who may be struggling with addiction, read your story at some point in their lives and that it helps them to start believing that recovery is possible. All the very best for the future, Simon

  10. Review titled Great therapy and rehab

    by fluteme55 - Posted on 16 October 2022

I was at breaking point in my life with drugs and alcohol when CGL made a referral to Bac O'Connor residential rehab in Burton. It's the best thing I have ever done. I came out yesterday after a 12 week programme and am 91 days clean. The therapy was great I have never been so happy! I am so grateful to CGL and Bac O'Connor.

Dear fluteme55 Thank you for getting in touch with us about your experiences of residential rehab. I'm Lydia, part of the team that responds to people's feedback. I'm so glad that you found the support you have received at Bac O'Connor helpful in your recovery. Being able to refer people into this type of support, is a relatively new addition to the options available to people who use our service in Birmingham, and I'm happy to hear that this is something you were offered and chose to commit to. I'm aware that going to rehab takes a lot of motivation and determination, as well as strength and courage to stick with it. I hope you feel feel proud of your 91 days abstinence as this is an amazing achievement. You've earned everyone one of those days through your hard work, and I hope everything you've learned through your therapy helps you to continue to add many weeks, months and years onto your abstinence time. I'll make sure your feedback gets passed onto the team at Change Grow Live who are responsible for helping people to access rehab opportunities. I'm sure they will be delighted to hear how well things went for you. Thanks again for getting in touch. Your feedback really does highlight how valuable opportunities to go to rehab can be to people's lives and it's amazing to know this opportunity has had such a positive impact on yours. Congratulations, and stay strong and determined. Best wishes, Lydia
